The Wings don't have any first-line future stars in the minors. This is why Detroit relies on the over-ripe philosophy. Don't people get this by now? Their young players aren't new versions of Yzerman, Lidstrom, Zetterberg, or Datsyuk. They're Doug Browns, Slava Kozlovs, Kirk Maltbys, and other good but supporting players. Expecting every prospect to blossom into an all-star is folly. -

I've been saying the Streak is important for a long time. Usually no one listens or responds. Management clearly wants to extend the Streak. Fans need to accept this. They can rail and rant against it, but saying it doesn't matter is silly. It matters and our expectations should adjust accordingly. -

That's exactly what he's going to do except their names will be Staal, Hudler, and Martin (signed for entirely too much money for a 4th liner). You don't expect Ken Holland to sit on all that Datsyuk money, do you? -
I understand your frustration but you're exaggerating here. Alfredsson was not a bust at all. He was old, yeah, but the Wings knew that. He played well. The Legwand deal was made to keep the Streak alive whether fans like it or not. The Streak continues so the trade can't be considered a bust. Erik Cole was playing pretty well before getting injured. He was picked up to help in the playoffs and it was a calculated risk and one that should be made any year.

Elite players probably assume they can turn any franchise into a winner. Sure, signing with a team like the 00s Wings was a no brainer, but I suspect most professional athletes think they can most any team win. Whether they're right is another issue. -
