Well we can only hope that this sends a message to Holland to step it up. Be smart, but use the cap space you have and improve the team, defensively first, but don't ignore the offense. Bring on Brent Burns!
-
If Hudler AND Filppula were to be traded, you would have to assume the trade return would be a significant defender or forward or we would make a strong push for Richards. A guy can hope. Brent Burns and Brad Richards, Detroit Red Wings. CAPGEEK.COM CAP CALCULATOR FORWARDS Henrik Zetterberg ($6.083m) / Pavel Datsyuk ($6.700m) / Tomas Holmstrom ($1.875m) Johan Franzen ($3.954m) / Brad Richards ($7.400m) / Daniel Cleary ($2.800m) Todd Bertuzzi ($1.937m) / Darren Helm ($0.912m) / Jan Mursak ($0.550m) Patrick Eaves ($1.000m) / Justin Abdelkader ($0.787m) / Drew Miller ($0.750m) Kris Draper ($0.850m) DEFENSEMEN Brent Burns ($3.550m) / Niklas Kronwall ($3.000m) James Wisniewski ($4.250m) / Nicklas Lidstrom ($6.200m) Steve Montador ($2.000m) / Brad Stuart ($3.750m) Jakub Kindl ($0.883m) GOALTENDERS Jimmy Howard ($2.250m) / Marty Turco ($1.100m) CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter) (these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion) SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $62,583,711; BONUSES: $0 CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $1,716,289 I know this is unlikely to go down like this, like most of these predictions are, but it's nice to know that it would work in many cases and we'd still have some cap room to play with. Richards feeding Franzen with Cleary working clean-up... oh boy. I also meant to put Jagr in there for 2 million or less. I think if we got Jagr, maybe you would switch out Montador or Wiz.

Winnipeg Ice-Hawks (Blackhawks...) Winnipeg Bison (too close to the Buffalo) Manitoba Moose (best option if you ask me) Winnipeg Freeze Yuck... Winnipeg Arctic Fox Winnipeg Owls Winnipeg Wolves Winnipeg Wolverines These are all indigenous animals in Manitoba...

Instead of giving up an asset for Scuderi who costs 3.4 million and is good for 15-20 pts per season (yes I know he is a great defensive player), why not just grab Steve Montador off of free agency for 2 million or so? He is gritty, plays a solid defensive game, and has been proven to put up 20-30 pts consistently. Oh and he's also a right handed shot, which we need more of. I'm not necessarily against Scuderi, but why would they even think about giving him up? And who would it take to get him? I don't know if they'd want Filppula or Huds...

It sounds as if Holland is readying a move after July 1st for a forward as well if he is giving a hard deadline to Jagr... Does anyone else get that feeling? Why else would he give him a July 1st deadline, if he wasn't looking at forwards in free agency? Richards perhaps? Haha, I know, pipe dream. He is speculating since we already have an offer out, Jagr has said to be interested in our team more than once, likes our system, and has received a call from Babcock as well as Lidstrom giving his blessing. Pittsburgh has not offered anything, and now their GM is going to talk to management before making an offer to Jagr. Would you want to go play for a team that really WANTS you, or a team that is so-so? I get where he is coming from with the speculation. I'd say the odds now are 70/30 Wings.
-
I'm not one to doubt Holland, but he had better have a strong plan this offseason. Two of our conference rivals just got some pretty good face-lifts today so far. Richards would have been a nice addition to this team, regardless of lifestyle.
-
Brad Stuart is a Top 4 d-man. He will more than likely be in the top two pairings. They will probably pair him with either Lidstrom or Kronwall. Montador as the number 5 guy makes sense, he's a shut-down defensemen who won't break the bank, and will fit in nicely here. We can also sign him long-term if he'd like to. 2 million cap hit per season. The guy is also a right handed shot and can put up 30+ points.
-
They really aren't in that bad of shape, in my opinion. Even if they don't get Bryz, they could always go out and try to acquire Vokoun. Otherwise, I think Bobrovsky will do very well moving forward, and they could just get a veteran backup (Hedberg, Theodore).
-
As do I and many other fans here, but as has been reported, it looks like Vancouver is close to re-signing him and should have something finalized by the UFA period. Anything is possible, though.
-
That reports was refuted by his Agent, but many rumors are swirling around that he'll be officially signed within the next few days... Anyway, I'd rather have Wizniewski since I believe he'll thrive here and help with our physical side of the game while putting up 45+ points and PP points as well. Get the Wiz!
-
Wow, only three seasons in the minus category and +275 overall... not too shabby. I just think it's sort of a moot point about his defensive game when you put him on a line with say, Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Cleary, etc... We are a highly defensively responsible team up front and with new coaching coming in, I think we may only get stronger (back to our 2007-2008 days). Holmstrom isn't the best defensively, but we don't all jump on his back and tell him to get out of town,
-
If they pay that much for Bryz, when they have a potential future star in Bobrovsky.... they are truly handicapped in the brain. But hey, I'll take Carle and Versteeg off of them in a trade, no problem.
-
It's all good. We have another 40 year old to take over the reigns and bring the Wings that sweet silver reward... Sergei Fedorov!!
-
Well don't apply us taking solid hockey advice from a smart and talented veteran seriously, for some "jump off a bridge" analogy that doesn't warrant being said. Most of the people who were excited about what he said, were probably at least 50/50 about the idea in the first place. Those who are blatantly against it haven't said a thing, at least most of them. We could use a sniper, and this would be a decent signing for a lower cap hit. There aren't any other suitable FA's out there and we don't exactly have the assets to acquire one through a trade. That's my thing. Will I be pissed if he chooses Pitt or the KHL again? Not at all, but I do at least like the possibility.
-
One of the smartest hockey players around who may very well be in his last season thinks that Jagr could be a good addition to the team. I'm inclined to go with his judgement on this one since he is the one trying to win another cup. You can try and apply this logic to "jumping off a bridge," but then you'd just be over-dramatic about the whole thing.
-
Exactly, if Jagr turns out to be a turd-basket, which I highly doubt, but if he does, we will have cap at the trade deadline to make a move and bring in a sniper. There will be snipers available then. If we get someone that truly meshes with the team, we'll have 6.2 million in cap freed up to make a long-term offer to said sniper.
-
Okay, if that doesn't change some people's minds on Jagr, I don't know what will. Lidstrom didn't have to say a single thought on the matter and all would have been well. If Lids is endorsing this type of move to bring in Jagr, then I can only assume that from a smart hockey player's mind, this would be a good move for us (for one year). If he signs for 2 million or less, that really won't hurt our cap this upcoming season. You'll still have the infusion of youth, and you'll be shedding Draper and Salei, only to bring in youth to replace them. If Captain believes in this move, I do too.
-
Overreact much?
-
What's different is that Jagr has proven himself to be consistent and puts up numbers. You put him on a line with Datsyuk and any number of other players (not including Holmstrom) and that line's defense shores itself up. I truly believe there is a lot of misinformation going around regarding Jagr's attitude as i've seen a few past teammates talk about how good of a guy he is to play with and that he's a competitor. We commit to Jagr for one season, or potentially commit to Zherdev for more than one. I certainly like the risk of a one season waiver over multi-year. If Zherdev cannot turn himself around on a team like Philly and the talent they have up front, what makes you think he can suddenly do it here? Zherdev flat out takes games off, Jagr doesn't.
-
Okay, Zherdev will not be here nor should he even be considered. He is lazy, has a poor attitude, and doesn't play defense whatsoever. Abdelkader and Mursak are not going anywhere. These are two primary cogs of our bottom 6 that should be around for many years to come. Mursak may even sneak his way up into the top 6 eventually as he is basically Helm with very good hands. Also, if we sign Jagr, what is up with people putting Holmstrom and Jagr on the wings with Datsyuk?!? That would be horrific and would wear Dats out quickly.
-
I would be just fine with that, especially if we can get Nabokov to sign an extension for the same cap hit (below 1 million). That would be ideal as far as backups with starters quality goes.
-
Montreal already reportedly said they are not intersted in adding Jagr... so I don't see that happening. I bet it's primarily down to the Wings and Pens... I would be fine if he comes here for a reasonable cap hit, of course.
-
It would very much be high risk, high reward.
-
Hudler is too small, doesn't skate hard enough at times, and this past year has looked out of place. Often times he would have an open shot and would pass it off. Come on! I don't want that crap on the second line. I'll take Jagr, Cole, Jokinen, Laich, Mursak, etc. over Huds. If you're going to be as small as Hudler, you needt o be able to make it up with foot speed and strength. He lacks both of these, which makes him expendable and overpaid at 2.8 million. Even if he does not get traded this season, he will not be re-signed, because his greedy midget fingers will be grabbing for more money, even though he hasn't acheived enough to even make what he does now.
-
If that happens, look for the Wings to take a chance on Markov for one season at least. If he stays healthy, it would payoff big time.
