Wow, no need to yell, I must have pushed a button. Downey: (maybe not as a Wing but still good) (This is a good one of him getting a sound thrashing by Brashear, but you gotta hand it to him for even standing up to him, he only comes up to Brashear's shoulders) (Not a spectacular hit, but it took Veilleux off his feet) Sure maybe no real WOW! moments, but he's got grit and isn't afraid of anybody. And like I said about Downey in my post I consider him an enforcer "to a littler lesser extent..." Now for some balance, here is some footage of Drake: (He didn't do too bad here, but got staggered pretty good with that first punch, and in the end he lost this fight) (This one was pretty good) (I don't know if I would call this a win or not) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghgPMdm0_no http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOfNLtbrDn4 (This one may make me rethink my feeling about not any fights he won decisively, he definitely got the better of this one) For me, Downey has it. But that's just my opinion and that's what makes the world great, we all have them, and are entitled to them. But from my seat, I see that Drake lost more in that list of footage than he won.

I know what you're all thinking, but this isn't another McCarty post like the others, this is kind of strange and pretty cool. My son and I collect hockey cards together and McCarty being one of my favorite players I kind of keep my eye out for his cards. Anyway, I came across the card pictured below (front and back scan of card) just before Christmas (I am just now getting around to this, I have been busy). So I thought I would post it on here and see if: First, you can guess what it wrong with/different about this card Second, if you figure out the first part, then how in the world did this come to be? I don't remember anything like this ever happening.

I can't think of anybody in our lineup that I would replace with Hossa, not even Lils. I don't think he's all that impressive, and I really don't think he would add all that much depth to the team. Sure he did good last night, but even a broken clock is right twice a day, doesn't make it worth buying. I am actually pretty happy with our current lineup, however it's my turn to pick up the hammer and ring the bell that has been sounding out so frequently here, we need more grit. We need more guys to play the body and let our finesse guys come in behind and pick up the loose puck. The only problem with this question is who do we get? Any of the big name guys that we know are going to do a bang up job (pun intended) are going to cost us way too much in the way of our star power. Not to keep harping on the McCarty subject, but that is one of the reasons I hope he makes it back. I think if he is really serious about this, and really puts in the work necessary, that he can be what we need on the physical end without costing us an arm, leg, Huds and Flipper. I know people are probably getting tired of the Mac discussion, but that's my take. I also think we could lose Drake, and play Downey a lot more, I think that would make a huge difference in the physical presence on the ice. I realize that Drake has scored a few goals this year but big deal, that's what we have Dats, Zetterburg, Flipper, Huds, Cleary and on and on for. We need to get physical for the playoffs because that is how we get beat. We skate out line after line of scorers and they get hammered. And every time the other team gets the puck our guys try to poke check it away, or do some cutesy finesse move to steal it back. Screw that, hit him and let the guy behind you pick up the loose puck. I don't know, I guess that's just the view from my seat.

I agree with you guys that he is an asset for sure, I just have a hard time calling him an enforcer. That was my only point. This I think I can accept.
-
Downey I can agree with, but Drake I would have to say would be questionable in that area. I have yet to see Drake win a fight decisively. I've seen him lose more than anything, and I have never felt after watching one of his fights that he gave anybody a sound pounding. So, I can agree with you about Downey, every time he's on the ice I look forward to seeing him lay something on a guy. But, I'm gonna have to disagree with you on Drake. I'm an enforcer fan, so when I think enforcer I think Probert, Kocur, McCarty, now Downey (to a littler lesser extent, but it's probably only due to the new NHL), but Drake just doesn't fit into that group for me. But it's just my opinion.

Cool stuff, I should have titled this thread simply "Trivia".

Wow, thanks Cicada, good call I never noticed that. Mystery solved. I thought he always wore #25, guess you learn something new every day. Well, maybe not you Cicada, you already knew it.

I'm not sure if he's ready to go just yet, but he is definitely on the right track. I really don't think it will take him long. Like I said, I think he has a couple more weeks here, then a stint with the Griffins and I think he can do this.

Hi guys, I was kind of reluctant to post this because I am a Generals fan as well, and don't want to belittle the team or their effort, but you ask a very legitimate question so I will post what I almost posted earlier. I was at last nights game as well and it was obvious that he was an NHLer in IHL clothes. The team did a good job at what they do, but it was obvious when he was on the ice (and not because everybody was yelling for him, or because I was looking for him specifically), he played hard and it showed. As for speed, in the overtime goal by Muskegon he was originally in front of the offensive net (just like Homer) so he was the deepest in the offensive zone when the turnover occurred. Despite that fact, he was the second one into the defensive zone, he was passing guys like they were barely moving. He almost got back to stop the play. Unfortunately it didn't happen, but it wasn't for a lack of his trying. When he broke out after the shooter like that, and got back in the time he did; I hate to say it but, my first thought was "he doesn't belong here" (I only hate to say that because if he stayed in Flint I could see him all the time). I would definitely say to give him a few more games, and then a short stint in the AHL, but I really think he can make this comeback. He looked really good. That's just the view from my seat though. Anyone else at the game that can speak on this? He is definitely training hard and it shows.

I will say that McCarty is one of my top 3 favorite franchise players, but this post will not be based on that. So far after reading all of the posts here I heard a lot of comments that say he can/he can't, he will/he won't, he doesn't have it any more/he still has it or can get it back, He can add to/he has nothing to add, if/not, maybe/never, who's spot?/nobodies. Anyway, I've learned long ago never to count a man out, he may surprise you. The resolve of the human spirit is an incalculable force. Will he be able to do it? I have no idea, but I would never say never. As for who's spot will he take, don't you think that we might be getting ahead of ourselves here? A journey of a thousand miles starts with one step, all you can look to is the next step. If you try looking to the end of the journey it will seem impossible, but the next step is always possible. I for one am glad to see him taking that first step, and that's what I'm going to pay attention to. Nothing more. Once the cards start to fall, then we'll look to the next step, and see what happens. Of course it helps that I am not far from the Flint Generals so it is nice to have one of my all time favorite players playing up by me. I think the best point I have heard made on here so far regarding his comeback bid was this: Babcock is not a stupid coach. He has his poop in a group. He is not nostalgic for McCarty, he wasn't here then so he doesn't know him as a friend or hero. If McCarty does make it back on the roster then that means he has what it takes. Babcock is not going to put someone on his roster that is not going to add something to his winning record, I don't care who it is, or how much everybody else loves them. Let's just watch him with the Generals for now and discuss his merit as a player as apposed to someone who is staging a big comeback climb. We also might want to give him more than one game before we start judging his play, he has been out for a while. After a few games would be the better time to look at his contribution. You can't base any players abilities on one game, there were players on the Wings last night that didn't get one single point, should we pitch them? Or base our analysis on a few of the games played? Just a thought.

Wow, I can't believe everybody missed it, it's so obvious. I would go to Chelios and ask him what we are doing.

if you knew yzermans last year to play was the season...
Lidsyukerberg replied to sirdrake1's topic in General
So... you're saying that if you had given your entire career to one team, bled for them, injured yourself for them, and then were only one season away from getting to retire as the longest running Captain for one team and having only played for one team, only to be suddenly traded and had to uproot your family; all because you were going to retire and were viewed as nothing more than a trading chip for someone younger that would stick around longer, you would come back to that city to have them tell you how much they love you and want to retire you as their hero? I wouldn't. Besides, he wouldn't be retired as the Captain would he? If he was traded before retiring, that would make him no longer the Captain of the Wings wouldn't it? "Ok then..." -

I think the first problem is that you are seeing Stevie as gone now, and are thinking that maybe we could have gotten somebody who would still be around. But that's a problematic way of thinking. Stevie isn't gone, he only retired from playing, he is still a huge part of the organization. Just because we don't see his affect on the ice, believe me it is there. Not only that, if we had traded him then his jersey wouldn't be in the rafters for all current and future players to look at and gain inspiration from. Crosby's will come and go throughout the league (and who knows maybe we'll even get a few, like a Zetterberg, or a Datsyuk, or a Hudler, or a Filpula, or a Cleary, or a.....), but Yzerman's are very few and far between. We would have never been able to get a trade for him that would adequately replace what he is still doing for this team, even if we got Crosby and four 1st round draft picks it wouldn't be enough. That's just my view though. Another angle to look at it from, and not so long winded, is that doing something like that would just be dirty pool to both Yzerman and whoever you traded him to. What a way to say thanks to the greatest thing to happen to hockey. Besides, I really don't think that Chelios would have approved. -
Hey guys, check it out. The Sports Authority in Great Lakes Crossing has Lidstrom jerseys (CCM) for $80 but they don't have the C on the front and the name on the back is the nameplate. It's not straight like the pre-season jerseys, it is curved like the season jerseys, but it is the nameplate nonetheless. Anyway, here's the cool thing. They do have some blank CCM and Koho jerseys for $39.99 and then you can take them to The Goalies Den and have any name put on for $50. I am taking mine in tomorrow to get Lidstrom put on. The $50 includes the C on the front as well. He said he can have it done in about a week. When I was in there earlier today there were still quite a few. Go to where the jerseys are and you will see all of the new Reebok jerseys. If you pass them and go to the wall with the shirts you will see a rack in front of that wall with a big "Clearance" sign on it. That rack has all of the jerseys on it.

Does anyone know where I can get a Markov jersey?
Lidsyukerberg replied to wingsrock34's topic in General
I'm guessing that you have either tried, or do not have access to Hockeytown Authentics. Have you tried NHL.com? They sell jerseys on there, you might pay quite a bit, but you will probably be able to get it. -
Bad news, I called The Sports Authority in Auburn Hills and they are out of the CCM and Koho and only have the Reebok Edge now. If you live nearby, you can look for yourself, the lady I talked to might not have known where to look, or might not have looked hard enough, but I asked if she was sure and she said she was. However, if any of you live anywhere near Flint, The Sports Authority in Flint has a bunch of CCM left. Same price. I'm just curious if anybody here was able to get any. If so, what name are you getting put on it?
-
Um...Maybe it's because I'm the noob, but I don't get it.
-
Here are the photos of the jersey. They really did a great job.
-
It's the old ones. I really don't like the new Reebok Edge, I can't stand the material or the style change. The change was slight, but enough to bug me. We even put the C on the left where it belongs. So other than the fact that it is Koho and not Reebok (last years Reebok, not the Edge), it looks just like last years jersey. I personally hope they go back to the old ones, I don't like the new ones at all. From what I hear, the players don't care much for them either, but of course that is just hearsay so take it for what it's worth. One of the complaints that I heard have been coming from the players, is that the jerseys are not wicking away the sweat like they are supposed to be doing (or like the old ones), but instead the sweat is running down their arms and filling their gloves. From what I heard, they have to use two to three pairs of gloves a game, because by the end of a period the gloves are squishy and heavy. Again, that is just something I heard from a friend who said he saw it on a special, so I could have heard him wrong or he could have repeated it wrong, or any number of things so it is totally hearsay.

Hey guys, I just picked it up from The Goalies Den today and it looks great. I will get some pictures of it for you guys tonight. Sorry it took so long, but I live pretty far from The Goalies Den so I couldn't pick it up until today. I would bet that The Sports Authority still has the jerseys. You wouldn't be able to get them by Christmas, but still a great deal on a jersey. When I was in last, they had CCM and Koho. I got the Koho because I like the weight a little better, but the CCM were nice too. I'll post the pics later.

Actually, that's not true. You would stop watching whatever bastardized sport they are creating to replace hockey. It's getting harder and harder every day to actually call this hockey. I'm just glad that I still have some of the older games on DVD for when I want to watch a hockey game. March 26, 1997, enough said?

I don't know if it's been posted yet, but this was awesome. The team in the color jerseys were just chasing the other guys around the ice. By the end of it they were even pacing back and forth in front of the other teams bench waiting for more victims to step on the ice. This rocked.

Ok, so I think last nights game against the Panthers (12-15-07) has got to be one of the weirdest games I've ever seen. I mean in a game that ended in a 5-2 win with us being the only team that scored, how do you explain that to somebody? How do you explain to somebody, that both teams had points but only one team scored any goals? As far as I'm concerned Osgood got a shutout (on the other team at any rate). And when was the last time you saw two penatly shots in one game? For the same team no less. Even though I would have to say that I think Pavs penalty shot was kind of a weak call, I mean he was in the slot when he was hooked and all, but haven't we all seen worse that was only called as a regular penalty? Or worse, not called at all? But what the heck, we'll take it (even though he missed). I think, however, that the weirdest thing about the whole thing is that Lidstrom was one of the players that got one of Florida's goals. Accidents happen and I don't hold it against either of them, but it is almost unheard of to see Lids make a mistake like that. What are your thoughts?

I like Olaf Kolzig's. But then again, I'm biased, my son has Autism.

Sure, no problem. I'll post some as soon as I get it back.
