Yeah, well I'd rather be in 7th with 41 points than 11th with 37.
-
Well, duh. "Teams that score more than the opposition win the most" I haven't figured out how we can correlate that to how Holland should be fired for not making any trades, but I'm sure it won't be long before someone enlightens me.
-
Exactly, Since the OP doesn't get updated with every trade, and every page is full of HOLLAND SUXORS!!!!!! it just takes far too long to sort the wheat from the chaff. How many pages would I have to read to find out that Gabby and Pominville have been traded?

Could Kenny be working on something HUGE?
Nev replied to Manny>Ozzie(by a long shot)'s topic in General
But thats the problem with being a tweener team like Detroit. We're not good enough like Pittsburgh or Boston to make a big move and really go for it. We're not bad enough like Calgary to blow it all up. We could turn into the '71 Canadiens as our hot goalie leads a mixture of promising kids and aging stars to one last hurrah. Or we could fizzle out like last year. This Wings team really is like a box of chocolates. -
An interesting point about our apparent deadline strategy

I love it - one thread bemoaning Hollands passivity. Another thread praising it. Man, this board is getting as bi-polar as our team. I haven't seen it split like this since the Great Enforcer Wars of 4-5 years ago. -
The first is only if Boston make the Conference Finals. So in your scenario, its a low 2nd and two middling prospects (who we have a glut of) for the chance to transform our top-6 and give us 2 legit PP units. Everyone agrees we need a top-6 goalscoring winger and a puck-moving defenceman. We're not going to get either for Mursak, Emmerton and a 5th.

Just Sheahan I believe. But LOTS of 2nd and 3rd rounders as lately Kenny developed the habit of trading our 1st for extra picks in the 2nd + 3rd rounds.
-
I agree, compared to last year when the likes of Quincey + Gaustad were going for 1st round picks, trading a 2nd (likely ~ 50th overall) and 2 middling prospects for a superstar HOFer who can still play seems like a pretty good deal to me. And lets not forget we have absolute log-jam of average to good prospects at forward, some of them will have to be traded away, just to make some room for the rest And all those calling Jagr a 42 year old - yep, a 42 year old with 3 more goals than anyone else on our team. Lidstrom was still pretty good at 42 ISTR.
-
Yeah, well if its Hollands fault that Parise and Suter's wife are from Minnesota, then Holland can get the credit for DeKeyser being from Michigan, y'know
-
Holland sucks!!! We're no longer a tempting destination for free agentsssssssss, aahhhhhhhhh.....ooh, er, hang on minute
-
He smashed Cleary's face up in a game at Toronto.
-
We shouldn't be greedy 3-1-0 is a great return on a tough road trip, I'll give the team a mulligan on this one.
-
I agree with almost everything else you've said in this thread, but you're smoking crack if you think Iginla isn't a sure-fire HOFer
-
My money is on Irishshock If Sammy sticks to his modus operandi, his goal will be a last minute winner in the 3rd game after stinking the joint out
-
And yet, if he hits free agency, rest assured he will be offered $5M plus. Ever since Jordan Staal signed that 10 year 60 million dollar contract, Flips agent has been rubbing his hands in glee. As we've seen this season, the new CBA has done nothing to reduce the ridiculous contracts.
-
Emmerton, Cleary and a 5th of course! Throw in a conditional 2014 4th rounder if Jagr re-signs with us If we were to get Jagr, I couldn't see him playing with Dats - there's only 1 puck and they can't both have it.
-
Dude has 14 goals, thats 3 more than anyone on our team. $4.5M is nothing, we've got tons of space. I would love it if we coudl get him (he might well cost more than Morrow did though, despite being a potential rental). As others have said, gives us 2 legit PP units if we could get him.

If you told me we'd be 5th with a healthy team I would have been ecstatic. To do this with all our injuries is definately an over-achievement IMO. OK it helps that Pav and Hank and James T Howard have been on fire, but Lashoff, Tatar and Andersson have all come in and exceeded expectations. Kindl and Ericsson have taken quantum leaps forward. We're not quite in a post-2002 Datsyuk, Zetterberg and Kronwall coming through type situation yet, but like those guys, sometimes all you need is an opportunity

No, the cap is a reality. As was Lidstom, Rafalski, Draper, Maltby and Holmstrom growing old and retiring. As was Stuart wanting to move back west to be with his family. Nothing Kenny could have done about that - and don't give me the old "he should have done more to prepare for their retirements" BS. Players with 3 and 4 Stanley Cup rings don't grow on trees, and to lose 5 of them in just a couple of years, plus other FA losses and still be competetive? How many other teams do you seriously think could survive having their hearts ripped out like that?
-
Don't forget the 5 consecutive top-5 picks - makes it a little easier to build a contender, y'know That's not to say he hasn't made some good moves if you have a "win now, forget tomorrow" mentality. Especially if that tomorrow includes being unable to afford Malkin and Crosby getting another concussion.
-
I remember when there was no cap, and you could trade away picks and prospects and fill the holes in your roster with free agents
-
Hell of a gamble by Shero. Sometimes this kind of thing works out - I'm old enough to remember when the Rangers traded for a ton of players in '94. Sometimes it doesn't - I remember teh interwebz going into meltdown when the Avs signed Kariya and Selanne "just hand them the cup now!"
-
Right, I'm gunna stop you right there tiger, because you essentially contradicted yourself from one paragraph to the next. We had a great team because of all the cheap players we had under the cap (ignoring the fact that Holland drafted/traded/signed all those players)? But apparantly that doesn't count as a cap team? Even though that has precisely proved to be the formula for winning cups in the cap world ie good young players (usually 1st rounders and lottery picks, except for the team that Holland built ) on ELCs or cheap 2nd contracts, with with enough cap space left over to fill the roster with quality vets. Now he's trying to do something unprecedented in the cap world - retool on the fly, when 2 or 3 years of major suckage is the more proven way to rebuild your team.
-
Sometimes 1 Like just isn't enough - this is one of those times. Superb. And scary how good looking Flip and Andersson are. Proper scary. Kindl on the other hand looks like Kurt Cobain. Big letdown for the Wings tonight, but who cares with a GDT line-up like that?

Is "Howard was average" the newest LGW meme?
