Well, I was wrong to jump ahead and say Kenny basically chose Maltby over Lilja. My bad. At the same time I still think Kenny should find a way to keep Lilja. If that means they have to trade away someone like Drew Miller and or Mattias Ritola then ok, fine, do it. Gotta give up something. Before the Drew Miller and or Ritola slappies come after me I have to say that I have nothing against Drew Miller. It's just that the bottom six is pretty clogged as it is. Even if those two are gone next year the Wings still have plenty of forwards to do a great job on the PK. Plus, Babs said that Abdelkader will be on the PK from day one. Filppula should be killing penalties as well as Pav and Z from time to time. Drew Miller is expendable at this point with everything considered.

Maybe, but being a Red Wing, being part of a winning culture, can definitely help a player's overall ability to get things done.

I mean... They need a solid third pair defenseman. Why not just try to keep Lilja? He's done a solid job. On top of that, they want to re-sign Maltby?? Forget about the fact that he would be the 15th forward should they re-sign all their RFAs, which is likely, but I mean... Even if they traded away two of their younger forwards, how does Maltby make the team better in their place? This loyalty thing has paid off at times in the past. Hopefully it won't bite Kenny in the end.

True. At the same time, Pav and Z should start seasons on the same line and build that foundation of confidence early. Later on they can be on separate lines when the play becomes stale. In the end, they'll always have that foundation to go back to if nothing else works. However, those two need to build it early and year after year as well. It's not just something that you can just pull out of nowhere and expect it to be great. We've painfully seen this the past two seasons.

Hehe, much appreciated. I remember in 07-08 they really went on a tear to start the season. Some said that Zetterberg could win the art ross trophy at that time. I thought that occurred for many reasons. For one, they're great players. Two, they were healthy. Three, they were emotionally charged after that debacle of a series against Anaheim. Hopefully those two can find the same mojo to start this season. The Wings will need it. I'm wondering if they should have some individual goals during the season or something. Like Datsyuk strives for 100+ points and to lead the Wings in points again. And Zetterberg really aims for his 50 goal year.

Haha, ahh Kopy. Can't wait for his few flashes of being a scorer in the NHL only to be buried within 75+ games of blending in with the ice in more ways than one. And as far as your view on #2, I have to disagree. I hope they do that all the time. Many things get boring to watch after a while but those two seemingly playing in a rink by themselves is something I'd watch for a while. Overall it's always great to see this thread. We really have been spoiled as Wings fans to watch these two the past few years.

We have legit reasons to doubt Abdelkader at this point. For one, he doesn't quite know yet what it's like to pace yourself for 82 games AND the playoffs if they were to make it. I mean, look at Helm and how he got a little worn down mentally after his first full NHL season. Of course, Abdelkader is supposed to be a better player than Helm but the yearly grind is tough for everybody. Two, what are we to think of the fact that Babs only rolled three lines against San Jose? Does that mean he feels that Abs is far from ready or what? I really don't know what the facts are on that whole situation. I mean, Helm and Abby had similar TOI for their first respective and extensive playoff run (08 compared to 10). The forward lines are exactly what I want them to be but I'd be lying if I said Abdelkader will without a doubt hold his own as the third line center. I felt that he'd be better suited for it because he has a more aggressive nature to his game than Helm, at least based on his play at MSU and the AHL. Plus, I think Abby has more of a scoring aptitude than Helm, which is one of the few things that can distinguish a 3rd liner from a 4th liner on the Red Wings.

I'm so excited to them play together again under proper circumstances. I just hope I'm not overhyping this in my own mind.
