I figured that if someone cared enough to upload an individual video to YouTube then the goal really is highlight reel worthy. Ideally I'd like the voting to be based on aesthetics, impromptu creativity, style points, etc. and not so much the game situation. If I missed one, select other and then let me know which one it is. Hossa - Toedrag on Schneider & Lehtonen Datsyuk - Keep away and then Nilsson on Khabibulin Franzen - Corkscrew on O'Byrne and Price Datsyuk - Wind and Deke on Huet Leino - 180 on Theodore Leino - Hand-Eye Coordination on Nabokov Zetterberg - Spin o rama on Nabokov Franzen - Shades of Orr on Mason
-
Thing is that was my absolute favorite. But it's understandable that collectively we're more about the individual effort.
-
On the offensive end. On the defensive end, no disrespect to Hossa, but when your opponent has a prolific scorer like Rick Nash, we all saw what happens to them when they get enveloped by Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Lidstrom and Rafalski. Separate Pav and Z on the Power Play.
-
I wanted to include that one at first because, I mean, how often do we see Nick get a breakaway? But this thread is about flash, which Nick cares very little about and God bless him for that. I'll say this though, after he scored that goal you can hear Zetterberg go "WHOOOOOO!" That was great.
-
Defensively, I'd like for Babs to reunite Pav and Z with Nick and Rafi on the back end. Give Nash the Crosby/Ribeiro treatment. The offense will take care of itself.

Leave room for a goaltender? Now I'm really skeptical. They barely have enough cap space to sign Hossa as it is. Plus, was it his agent who said "Hossa is going nowhere" or was it the writer? It's a big difference to me.

I have an odd hunch but it doesn't really change all that much in terms of cap numbers. I look at Daniel Larsson and I see a goalie who adapted well to the NA style and rinks; before this year had two successful years in the Swedish Men's League, who some like to argue that in many ways is more advanced than the AHL; won goaltender of the year in the SEL; and overall is quite ready to take the next step on most other teams. Some like to argue that he was ready before he came over here to be a backup. He just needed some time to adjust to the difference in nuances and details of the North American game, perhaps most notably the smaller rink size and the faster pace. Maybe they think that with everything considered, he's ready. He'll get his shot to compete for the job this summer and I guess we'll just see what happens. Every year has its share of pleasant surprises and I personally wouldn't be if that were to happen. It just doesn't change all that much in terms of cap hit because the difference between Howard and Larsson is about 80k and RFA status.

Both of them were sweet. It just sucks they had to come with losses.

This should make it more simple. 6.700------------Datsyuk 6.080------------Zetterberg 3.000------------Filppula 2.500------------Cleary 2.250------------Holmstrom 1.850------------Draper _.950------------Maltby _.630------------Helm 7.450------------Lidstrom 6.000------------Rafalski 3.750------------Stuart 3.000------------Kronwall 1.250------------Lilja _.900------------Ericsson _.650------------Lebda _.475------------Meech 1.417------------Osgood _.717------------Howard 3.954------------Franzen + 53.523 56.7-53.523=3.177 of cap space remaining. 58.0-53.523=4.477 (for those who are more optimistic) If the cap stays the same, which it will in all likelihood, then you have barely over 3 million for the UFAs of Marian Hossa, Mikael Samuelsson, Tomas Kopecky, Chris Chelios, Ty Conklin, Darren Haydar, Darren McCarty, Aaron Downey and the RFAs of Jiri Hudler and Ville Leino. I'm pretty sure this is right. Add and subtract at your own pleasure.

Here, this should help with those who really like to crunch numbers. 18 players signed The Red Wings have 18 players signed for 2009-10 (those projected to make the team) at a cap figure of $49.5 million. That includes eight forwards (Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg, Valtteri Filppula, Dan Cleary, Tomas Holmstrom, Kris Draper, Kirk Maltby and Darren Helm), eight defensemen (Nicklas Lidstrom, Brian Rafalski, Brad Stuart, Niklas Kronwall, Andreas Lilja, Jonathan Ericsson, Brett Lebda and Derek Meech) and two goaltenders (Chris Osgood and Jimmy Howard). They need to sign four or five forwards -- and they don't have a lot of cap space. Jiri Hudler and Ville Leino are restricted free agents. Mikael Samuelsson and Tomas Kopecky are unrestricted, along with Hossa and Franzen. By some accounts, next season's salary cap could rise slightly, from $56.7 million to around $58 million. Holland must also keep an eye on the future, as the cap is expected to decrease, perhaps considerably, in 2010-11. "We're going to lose players,'' Holland said. "The only press conferences I'm going to have this summer are to announce which players are leaving. We're not having press conferences to say which (new) players are coming.'' If the Red Wings wait until late June to sign Hossa and/or Franzen, they will have a better indication of precisely how much money they can spend. Every $100,000 they save will impact other moves. http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/20..._red_win_1.html

According to the LGW.com salary chart, the Wings had 9.051mil in cap space left before the Franzen deal (I subtracted Ericsson's salary and added Lilja's). Minus the apparent 3.9 Franzen cap hit, the Wings now have 5.151 of cap space. Let's just assume that Ericsson, Helm and Jimmy Howard will be full time next year. And so their cap hits (.900+.830+.733) total to 2.263 mil. Subtract that from 5.151 and you have a grand total of 2.888 mil of cap space left for Marian Hossa, Mikael Samuelsson, Tomas Kopecky, Chris Chelios, Ty Conklin, Darren Haydar, Darren McCarty, Aaron Downey as UFA and Jiri Hudler and Ville Leino as RFA. A popular option recommended by these boards is to drop Filppula's salary to add Hossa, but I sincerely doubt Hossa is that generous. If they really want to re-sign Hossa, with no consideration for the other FAs they have to re-sign, they could drop Filppula-3 along with both Meech-.475 & Lebda-.650, which would bump their cap space up to a little over 7mil. Just as a note: You could consider Abdelkader and Ritola as full time players next year as well, but then you have to add their cap hits (.660 + .500) that total 1.160. Oh God... I don't know if any of s*** makes any sense. I would hate to be an accountant if I had to deal with depressing numbers like that all day.

I love those two goals along with the color commentary on the Dallas goal, "Datsyuk beautiful move-SETUP for the score!!!" It's just that for the purposes of this thread I only wanted to include highlight reel finishes. If I included great passes then to this minute I'd still be embedding videos of Pav dipsy doodling.

His 2nd as a wing. His 1st was an OT winner on Lundqvist, the guy he scored on to end NYR season last year.
-
Nick is saving that for next season's opener in Sweden.
-
Meh, I didn't want to include shootout goals.
-
Well, congrats to the Hawks, they needed the worst call I've seen in quite some time in order to beat the Wings this year. On one side they must be thinking that they'll take it when they can get it and at the same time the victory must feel a little hollow right? Even they must know how bad that call was.
-
He's 25 years old and he looks nothing like a kid. More like a pug. I mean, Big E is 25 too but he still looks like he can pass for "kid."
-
Being 2nd in points on the Red Wings is nothing to hang your head about but it still seems like Z is having an off year, no?
-
Chelios at forward??? How insulted must he feel especially with a pedigree such as his? Why not Big E at forward? He used to be one anyways.
-
Apparently he could've commanded at most a 6 mil cap hit. I guess if that's true, then the deal is not so bad. Meh.
-
Ugh... Buzzkill. I was excited for the contract but now a 3.9 cap hit?
-
Lmao. Along with a weekly coupon for 50 cents off of Metamucil?
-
Plus, I don't see why Franzen can't be a 3rd line checker in the bottom half of his career. So whenever he starts sucking as a scoring line player he can always revert to being the checker he was when he first came here. Sure the cap hit is a lot for a checking line player but I think the Wings are taking the risk that the cap will increase tremendously by that time.

"Nope, sorry, I want to be a Red Wing..."
