Calgary Flames relieve gm Jay Feaster and John Weisbrod
dobbles replied to Euro_Twins's topic in General
calgary continues to be one of the worst run franchises in the league. i still don't see how they are planning on rebuilding through youth and the draft considering they haven't developed any good players in 10 years. -
assuming everyone was healthy, would that be the 3rd line? and what would you use for other combos?

i think its funny how fan opinion of howard has spiraled out of control. if you look at goalies with more than 10 games, howard is 28 out of 45 in save percentage. so even though he is having a bad season, thats still middle of the road. now, with a contract like his, expectations are higher than middle of the road. i get that. but people act as if he has been atrocious or something. gustavsson has been great and i am glad he has gotten a good number of starts. but the best goaltender in our organization is still jimmy howard. and if we want any legitimate playoff aspirations in the next few seasons, it means howard in goal. let me throw out a little stat here: the highest save percentage gustavsson has ever had in a season: 90.2 the lowest save percentage howard has ever had in a season: 90.8 (excluding his seasons with 4 or less games played) gustavsson is playing great right now. but its a hot streak, nothing more. i for one am still behind howard. i feel the majority of his goals are due to poor defense not poor goaltending.

let me first say, i am not one criticizing the signing. at the time i was 100% behind it. it seemed like were getting a slightly better player than flip and someone that could bring more offense. as you state, most hockey minds agreed. with that said though, what we have so far isn't working. and in my opinion that is something the gm should be accountable for. at the end of the day, the gm is responsible for finding players that fit the team. they are paid to be super knowledgeable and build a staff that can evaluate talent. now, even if weiss never turns it around an this contract does turn out to be a flop, i am not implying its a fire-able offense on its own. we all make mistakes. and the idea is that over the course of times, we make more good moves than bad. but that gets to my main point on this holland tangent: has ken holland had more good moves than bad over the last 5 or so years? because in my mind he hasn't. we havent fleeced anyone in a trade, we havent had any crucial FA signings that helped our team long term, etc. so thats why holland has got into a lot of peoples dog houses. sure we are still drafting well, but even that strength is often nerfed because of holland and his over reliance on veterans. (though hopefully that has finally changed for good) anyways, sorry for going off topic on that. to bring it back on topic, is there anyone on the roster that you guys think has played well with weiss so far? and that genuinely isn't a loaded question. as i have said several times, i dont see many ways out of his contract, so its in everyones best interest to help him succeed. personally, i haven't seen anyone he seemed to have any chemistry with. a few posts back someone suggested weiss needed to play a more north south game. if that is the case, who would fit that mold?

Why does this team sleepwalk against bottom feeders?
dobbles replied to unsaddleddonald's topic in General
when a team wins against good teams and loses to bad teams, i think thats a sign of a team that plays to the level of its competition. in other words, a team that doesn't go 100% every night because they feel they can slack against lesser competition and get away with it. what worries me is that it could be the result of organizational philosophy. we all love to boast about how loyal the wings are to players. but is that a bad thing??? does it allow for players to float more and not be as accountable? i think we all have worked in jobs with lazy co-workers and that can be poisonous as others see that and then start questioning why they need to have the appropriate work ethic if others get away with slacking. -
i know you are just joking, but on a more serious note, i have to wonder if franzens slow start was due to weiss? franzen is obviously streaky no matter who he plays with, but onec he got away from weiss he really turned his season around. lots like to point to weiss not having good linemates, but has there been a game this season where he has made his line better? it seems like every time players get off his line they improve!
-
he is still 7th for forwards in ES TOI per game. and even though he already missed some games, he is still 8th in forwards for PP total TOI. he has been getting plenty of chances. and according to behind the net, his most common linemates this season have been abdelkader and alfredsson. so its not like he has been with cleary and sammy for a majority of his shifts. but i must go now, because i have to quit watching sports because i am not the right kind of fan...
-
he got stuck playing with cleary because he was terrible for 15 games, not because there is a cosmic conspiracy. demoting a player to a lower line with crappy linemates is one of the few things that can be done to try and send a message to a player. i expect him to be fired up about the 25 million dollar contract he signed and i expect him to be fired up to play with great players on a team with a great history. he shouldnt need anymore motivation. but watching him out on the ice it seesm rather apparent he does...

weiss is obviously a good hockey player. you dont score hundreds of points in the nhl by luck. but he also obviously does not fit in this system on this team. i dont know if its the system, the coaching, the linemates, or something else. but this is bad. brutal even. we dont have many options right now, but we have to do something. getting demoted to the 4th line obviously didnt fire him up.

watching this game made me want to cry... when the panthers scored their first goal i got really pissed. my wife didnt understand why as the wings were still up. as soon as they scored that goal i knew we were in for a SO loss. i could just feel it.

Do Quincey and Smith have a future in Detroit?
dobbles replied to nyqvististhefuture's topic in General
the ahl is not a differet game. its the same style as the nhl played a slightly lower level. thats the reason al teams put their prospects there, to simulate the nhl as best as possible without being there. thats the reason european players will come over and play in the ahl first to try and acclimate to the NA style and rink size. thats the reason something like 90% of nhl players have ahl experience. of course in the best case scenario players would get a few games in the show early on so they know what to work on and what its like. im not disputing that. nor am i disputing that player should get more nhl time before they run out of waiver options. i think the wings wait too long actually. however, thats not the point i was making. i think players that have been in the ahl multiple seasons and are 24ish years old should be able to step right into the nhl in limited roles. will they be the same player on day 1 that they are with 5 years experience? of course not. but with how old are players are when they break in, they shouldnt have much of a learning curve. thats my point. -
Shawn Thornton attacks Orpik (leaves game on stretcher)
dobbles replied to TheDetroitRedWings's topic in General
mccarty wanted to punish lemieux with his fists, and is revered here for it. can't have it both ways... sure the slew foot was pretty douchey, but many felt mccarty 'jumped' lemiuex similar to this altercation.... the only difference is the stretcher. had it not been brought out, we probably wouldn't even be having this conversation... -

fair enough. i think i had a poor word choice there. i think questionable would have been the better choice. but in fairness to thornton, he didn't have the benefit of replay like we do. -

dobbles replied to TheDetroitRedWings's topic in General
i wish thornton wouldn't have did what he did so the focal point in the media would have been how big a ******-canoe neal is. i wish he would have ended up with the longer suspension out of all of this. what he did was totally cowardly. i think how it played out is really unfortunate. orpik goes off on a stretcher from a couple gloved punches so it makes thornton out to be the worst dude in the history of the world, but since marchand is disliked by most and was able to get off the ice, his injury was no big deal. i wish the league punished more for intent an not on theatrics. thornton shouldnt have slew footed and he shouldnt have punched a guy thats down. but at the end of the day he was trying to fight a guy that had made a borderline dirty hit. i can understand someone getting caught up in the passion of the game and making the mistake he did. whereas neal's actions just make me not want to be a hockey fan when people can get away with dirty plays like that. honestly that is worse thaneven lemiuex on draper IMO. -
i disagree. i have not seen him put in much effort at all in these last few games. i certainly hope he can turn it around eventually, but at this point i think he has played with most every forward we have and hasnt shown chemistry with any of them.

i dont understand your point... to me, when the wings bury someone in the ahl for 3 years, once they do get the call, they should be ready. thats the entire point of having them down there. if someone is 19 and coming straight out of the chl, i understand being patient. but when our rookies are 24 and been playing north american pro hockey for over 200 games, then expectations are high that they can step into limited roles pretty quickly. i just dont see how you can be baffled by 2 things that are basically cause and effect. -
you haven't seen much hockey then... players break their sticks all the time in frustration besides, i appreciate a player that gets emotional and pissed off when things aren't going well. thats the kind of player we need more of.

i don't think howard has played bad this year. however, i do think he is below his level of play the last few season. and now that he has that fairly large contract, he is looked at to be a guy that can make saves and win games. we often look at goals and say 'well it was the defensemans fault the goalie had no chance' and thats understandable, but to me, elite goalies are the ones making saves they have no business getting to. i always think back to those playoff series we had against the flames and kiprusoff... that dude made saves that no one should have made. and that to me is what defines a top level goalie. they not only stop all the shots they are expected to, but also some that they aren't. for several years our D has been bad and we have given up way too many odd man chances the last few years. and i feel howie has always gotten his share of saves that were of the elite quality. thats why i have always been a supporter when others haven't been. we look at some softies or something but ignore all the high quality saves he wouldnt have t make if our defense wasnt swiss cheese. so with that said, i think he's just been ok. however, gustafsson has been good. i think a lot has been luck with rebounds and posts and all that, but a lot of times, thats all a goalie needs. personally, i think they should continue to give gustafsson a decent amount of starts. let howard rest. he has played a lot of games the last few seasons and i feel it hurts us in the playoffs. let him get rest now so at the end of the year he hasnt been in 65+ games again. howard will get out of this funk eventually. hopefully the wings have enough healthy forwards to win some games between now and then!

Systems Analyst: Wings score because Sens line changes were hilarious
dobbles replied to haroldsnepsts's topic in General
i do enjoy his posts. however, i think the 3rd goal is not really valid. sure a change happened, but the goal was because of the atrocious 1 on 3 defense the sens played. even with that slow change, they still had 3 back to cover helm, smith, and miller if they needed to. not to mention, it should have never even gotten that far. i just think the change was a scapegoat in that sequence. -
not sure if its the site you are referring to, but according to behindthenet.ca, his most common linemates are cleary and franzen. i agree with you harold, people act as if he was on the 4th line when the season started. he earned these lousey minutes. and despite his recent demotion, he is still middle of the pack for forwards time on ice for ES and PP.

injured Zetterberg out at least 2 weeks with herniated disc

what ever happened to that guy? didn't he spend the whole offseason proclaiming that there was no way emmerton wouldn't be in the lineup? -
Do Quincey and Smith have a future in Detroit?
dobbles replied to nyqvististhefuture's topic in General
i think smith still has a future here as the organization will give him every chane to succeed. he as shown in the last few weeks a lot of reasons why the team should keep him around. quincey i believe is on his way out. we wasted a 1st rounder to get him, which sucks, but i dont think it will be enough motivation to keep him when he has been pretty darned bad since coming back. the only apprehension is that our D is very young. quincey is that additional veteran presence. i had hoped coming into the season that smith and dekeyser could play lights out and allow kenny to move quincey at the deadline and get something back for him. smith started real slow and dekeyser is hurt, so i think he will play out the year. the lost asset is less important than having a veteran blueliner. (though with as bad as quinceys been, he is really putting that line of thinking into question!) i also think the regression of kindl hurts the ability to move quincey this year. overall i still think this defense needs to build from within. dekeyser has taken over what many projected smith to be as a legit top pairing guy as early as next year. to me that just means they need smith or kindl to be a top 4 guy while allowing other young guys to rotate into that bottom pairing. -
for me it all boils down to linemates. cleary has been given tons of quality minutes with our top players, while eaves, miller, tootoo, etc are all just spare parts put wherever we need someone. my opinion of watching these guys play over several seasons is that dan cleary rarely if ever makes the line he is on better. point wise he had a great playoff last year. but forgive me if bouncing pucks in off his * gets me excited! sure he went to the net, but so will eaves, tootoo, or anyone else. i feel like eaves has always been a player that plays a strong game. and when needed he will step up into a bigger role for a short time and at least not make the line he is on look bad. i guess overall, where i am coming from is that eaves has a history of being solid in that role and has done nothing to show he cant continue to be solid. conversely, cleary has just continued to look very awful out there. and while he has managed to keep a +2, he also only has 4 points even though he has the 7th most minutes played for forwards including over 24 minutes of PP time. which is actually almost as many minutes as eaves has been given total! either way, thanks for the polite discussion!

kronwall is definitely a lot better defensively this year compared to last. its obviously sad to not see him kronwalling people, but as long as he continues to play solid hockey like this, i dont see how we can complain. regarding the #1 dman issue, i think a lot of it comes down to semantics. several in this article have referenced the fact that there are literally 30 #1 dmen in the league. but for many, the term #1 D (or top line center, or elite goalie) reference a specific subset of that group. that is when it can end up leaving out a guy like kronwall. is kronwall in the top 30 for best defensemen? is kronwall the best dman on his team? is he at that elite level that constitutes him being considered a true #1 dman? the first 2 questions most all agree are yes. its that last one that give some people problems. and please don't jump on me specifically, i am not saying i agree with the opinion, just understanding where people are coming from...
