Apparently that is what happened: “I didn’t even know,” said Eaves after practice, who’s in the final year of his contract. “I knew I wasn’t playing. I just found out from you guys.” http://redwingsfront.wordpress.com/2013/11/14/eaves-becomes-another-salary-cap-victim-wings-coach-mike-babcock-its-a-business-decision/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

According to Ted Kulfan, Eaves found out he had been waived from reporters. If true that really sucks.
-
No, especially when you are talking about something like a professional sports organization, very often the customer is quite wrong. Why would the Wings waive Bert? He is 3rd in goals, 6th in assists, and 5th in overall points, and leads the team in power play goals (all the while only averaging 14:42 of TOI per game). It would be beyond silly to waive him. edit: Clarity

I don't think that there is any way that the Wings sign Cleary last summer for less money than he was offered elsewhere and then waive him.
-
I'd go with Drew Miller. I think he is a great PK man and always seems willing to do whatever it takes to help the team. I think the way he goes about playing is great for the Wings organization.
-
Not to mention if they don't get Moulson to re-sign with them near the trade deadline they can trade him for a first for sure, giving them two 1st and a 2nd all for trading Vanek who was never going to re-sign with them anyway.

I'll keep him in my prayers. Hopefully he will fully recover.

signed Wings sign Alfredsson to 1-year, $3.5m deal (+$2m bonuses)
Frozen-Man replied to ogreslayer's topic in General
That is not exactly a fair comparison, the Sens got beat in 5 games by the Pens, who then got swept in the ECF by the Bruins, who lost in 6 games to the Hawks. The Wings got beat, in overtime, in game 7 by a team that then won the WCF in 5 and then beat the Bruins in 6. Those are dramatically different situations. -
Dreger: Filppula looking for $5.5m/season over at least 7 years
Frozen-Man replied to a topic in General
That is the problem moving forward, he was good for what he WAS paid but now he is asking to be paid like a goal scorer even though he isn't one. -
Khan said the hold up for the Wings with Gaborik was the $7.5M cap hit next year.
-
Not sure of the truth of this but I have read in a couple of places that the news was delayed because DeKeyser asked permission to personally call the other teams who showed interest and let them know he was going with the Wings. Maybe not the prima donna move that some here were claiming (this is not directed at you Dom) and a very classy and respectable move instead.

Looks like unless there is a mistake Danny is going to be a Red Wing.

Joey MacDonald claimed by Calgary off waivers
Frozen-Man replied to derblaueClaus's topic in General
Sportsnet is reporting that the Flames pick up Joey MacDonald on waivers. Best of lucky Joey (except against the Wings) thanks for your time here. -
Not sure who will be dropped but I vote that the nickname Emdog is dropped.
-
I wouldn't give up the future considerations, no need to mortgage the farm.
-
Lol. I really wish we had re-signed him long term too.

I think comparing bringing Hossa on for one year and bring Semin on for one year is a horrible comparison. In fact the only thing that the two situations have in common is one year term and $7m+ salary. Hossa was the best UFA that year, he turned down much better offers to play with the Wings (in fact his agent said "'I have never been involved in a deal and seen a player get so excited to take $85 million less than he was offered elsewhere,' Winter told The Canadian Press. 'It's almost incomprehensible, even to an agent. But Marian is a special player.'" ), and neither his work ethic or his attitude had ever been questioned. Semin on the other hand was not tops on anyone's list, couldn't get a multiyear deal (at least not a good one), didn't turn down better offers (I assume), and is constantly questioned and trashed over his work ethic and attitude.
-
I hate to tell you but you're wrong. Your statement has nothing to do with my post. My statement was a direct response to LeftWinger who said "a player can make more than Pav," No one was talking about term, a player that makes $7m "make more" than a player that makes $6.7m. If you are going to say I'm wrong at least have some clue what you are talking about because what I said was in no way wrong.
-
I know it is frustrating, but Holland offered Parise, Sutter, and (I think it is safe to assume) Weber more than Dats -- That doesn't mean however, that he thinks Semin should make $300,000 more than Dats.
-
I doubt the guy who actually has to pay the $7,000,000 out of his own pockets (even with how deep his pockets are) would agree that there is no risk. Perhaps Ilich looked at Semin and said the Caps didn't want to resign him, he has a bad rep, can't get more than a one year deal anywhere, has been on the market a month . . . your not going to risk $7,000,000 of my money on a guy that is such a question mark and might even end up hurting the team.

Flyers sign Weber to offer sheet: 14y/$110m ($56m 1st 4yrs)
Frozen-Man replied to a topic in General
I'm not saying that he will or even that I think he will, merely that I just think there is the possibility he might. You know he doesn't want Nashville to be decimated and relegated to a non-playoff team, they were one of his biggest southern expansion success stories. You bought up the Kovy contract, which was initially rejected by the NHL because they thought it artificially lowering the annual average value of the contract by front loading the contract excessively and extending it beyond the age they thought Kovy would continue to play. There may be some dispute as to whether or not Webber will continue to play out his contract but it is more egregiously front loaded than others (including in my opinion Parise and Suter) because the salary/bonus structure for each of the first FOUR years is over $14M and will end up in excess of $56M in the first four years - more than half of his total pay in the first 28.5% of his contract tenure. We have a saying in tax law, "pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered" - given the fact that Bettman is predisposed (I think) to hate the deal and that it is just a little more egregious I can see him pushing (even if it is solely behind the scenes) to invalidate it.- 469 replies

Bettman has got to be unhappy about this as well. Wonder if he'll exert some pressure to invalidate the contract in an effort to help his southern expansion teams.- 469 replies

I agree, I was just thinking how bad does Rinne have to be feeling now. I think they probably will too but that is a lot of money and term to lock up in someone who obviously doesn't want to be there.- 469 replies
