    Brunner Contract Talks

What makes you say this about Brunner? I would stake a large wager that Nyquist's career is far better than Brunner's. Tater, well that wager would be more of a 1:1 thing. Brunner plays little D and has no physical aspect to his game. Tater has a better game, with one notable question mark, the ability to score at the NHL level. IMO Brunner and Tatar are both 3rd line wingers. Nyquist is a top 6 and, in time, he has definite top line potential.
  4. Good for the Grifs as they look to repeat!

    Brunner Contract Talks

Brunner appears to be a soft, no hit, no D, 20 goal scorer. Tater appears to be a more competitive replacement, with more speed and tenactiy. The question is, can he make the same offensive contribution as Brunner? I prefer Tatar and bringing up the other younger forwards. Good luck to Smiley.

    is anyone happy right now?

is anyone happy right now? - In direct reply, I am very happy with these moves. Weiss > Fil Alfie > Brunner How is the team worse off with these swaps? The Wings are rebuilding and staying competitive. They lose Fil but picked up Weiss (who is an Eastern Conference vet). They lost Brunner and picked up a NHL HOF type player in Alfie (who is also an Eastern conference vet). Both are upgrades.

    Brunner Contract Talks

Since the inception of the Cap, Holland has built a roster based on the money. It appears he will not over spend to make a 1-2 year run. Rather, his goal is to keep putting in parts to keep the team competitive, in the playoffs every year. I also believe this is Holland rebuilding. Signing the vets makes this team a top 5 club, while still builting for the next generation to take the reigns. top 5 - Bash away but I believe this club ended the season as a top 5 team. The D is set for years, and so is the net. Sure, losing a younger net finding forward like Brunner hurts, but I am confident has a plan to bring on young buck forwards. Fil and Brunner for Alfie and Weiss.... I have no complaints.

He may also find out all the monmey has been spent. I think he will sign within 24 hours. I have no idea where but those that hit the market usually leave their last club.

    Brunner Contract Talks

Sammy appears to have become a problem. I did not like the signing and him using a questionable injury to handcuff management (which impacts the roster) may not go over well come this fall. Brunner - I like the guy, but this is a numbers game. Tatar (hopefully) can look to fill that spot, at a lower cost. Nyquist and Smith will be signed.

    3/16 GDT : Red Wings 5 at Canucks 2

With children in the house I have put a secuity lock on NHL network until Sunday. This is gonna be U-G-L-Y. http://scores.espn.go.com/nhl/boxscore?gameId=400442878 The minutes played last night by Pasha, 25. Howard, fle returning 63 minutes and playing again. Kronner - 26 minutes. The two D under 20, Smith at 17 and Lash at 14. (Of course White replaces Q). This team looked slow WITH rest. Tonight...I'll DVR the game and catch dinner.

3/15 GDT : Red Wings 3 at Oilers 2 (OT)

I enjoyed glancing through pages 10+. Eff youuu. F***, malarky, is Mule overweight? Howard has horrible rebound control, very creative Cleary with Pavel, and my favorite, this D passes like a Kia on the autobahn. I think we all agree Pasha's legend is growing. I enjoy every game he plays. Howard was, again, sensational. Fil - Mickey insists on it and I can't disagree, he hasn't missed a beat. A contract year will do that. Hank & Brunner - they are turning the puck over, not in the right spot, etc. They need SOMETHING! < now THAT'S coaching! Tootoo - Everyone can be bested, accept Anderson Silva. Mike Brown is your weakness. Skate on by. OK, now far be it for me to stop the complaint fest on this group. I still see them in the postseason, and I like the top 6 on D.... so I will bash them to shreds! Smith -This kid plays tryout hockey. Give the puck up, make the pass, support, etc. < He is the most frustrating guy on D for me to watch. He has the tools, but he either has severe myopia or an ego that requires two helmets. Kronner - you are getting beat, making bad passes and not hitting a SOUL. Rather than focus on improving your skill set, crush someone. The adreneline of fight or flight will take care of the rest, but good night Kindl has the best D hit of the season... KINDL! Kindl - Let them drop into the sack kid. Babcock can't literally whip you. The guy skates through the neutral zone with fear, not of a crushing hit, but of a mistake. Painful to watch. Last night the guy did the same drop pass again and again and again and again, literally that many times. Drop passes are one step above dump and chases on the PP. You see the pass, but you don't make it. MAKE IT .. or not, but efffing try. < It just struck me, maybe Kindl's nickname should not be Kuba it should be TULL. Why? Whenever he is ourt there he reminds of the lyrics, " skating away on the thin ice of a new day." Lash - you get beat on the outside like a returned runaway slave. I would tell you to get faster, but that is like telling the Show Pony to get tougher. Quincey - Kindl was given the ridiculous "almost made the roster at 18 label" which is bad enough because of the implied skill set but you sir, have a real issue. The Wings gave up a #1 pick for you. Forget the Wings history with #1's no one will recall McCollum, Wallin, Max, Yan etc. NO sir, you cost the Wings eerrrr, hhhmmmm, welllllll,, the next Sheahan, Smith or Kindl! Soft, out of position and no offense. Ericsson - Babcock said you were Pronger w/o the nasty stuff. You ain't. I recall all the hype about your slapshot. Sure, if this were golf hockey and you were Happy Gilmore we would put it on a tee and give you all the time you like to shoot. However, every team knows the forward can drop between the circles and still get to you before you shoot. Try the nasty stuff.

Should Visors Be Mandatory In The NHL

What player entering the League today removes the shield? I presented the stats. Quincey hurt himself, his teammates and the organization. So much for that deadline #2 for White ....POOF! (and he will have a shield when he returns, mark my words.)

We are the Detroit Red Wings and we are making the playoffs

Application submitted. They need the 4 spot, but taking the 8 spot and punking out the Hawks is OK by me.

Time to blow it up and rebuild

To the original post I say, "slow down turbo." 1) Least anyone not notice the team is rebuilding. Proof: They transitioned to a stable under 30 #1 netminder, with a solid 28 year-old #2 The top 6 D are all home grown and, accept for Kronner under 30 and over 200 lbs (meeting some of the need to get bigger). The #7 Cola, just turend 30 in January. They brought in a new top 6 with Brunner, 27. They are also breaking in Andersson, Emmerton and Tatar/Nyquist. More work needs to be done, but injuries and growing pains hurt the team at the same time. Bert going down (he is done) was bad for Pavel. Toss in Fil, Sammie and Helm and a transitioning forward group just lost a big bodied scoring winger (Bert), a playmaking/shutdown winger/center (Fil), a 3rd line & PP scoring winger (Sammie) and a stand out defensive specialist and all around energy guy (Helm). In the cap era, any team would struggle. When that team is rebuilding you get the product we see on the ice today. I lived through far worse and if these are the darkest of days, it will be be a rebuild where the team may not miss a post season (though it will be damn close this season).

Red Wings close to re-signing Howard

We spoke of this in the other (Howard is average) thread. I presented his stats and the pay ranges. The rumored talk of 4-5 million fall into the range of earned by performance pay one would expect. As for the future, no GM woth his weight in salt, is shortening the length of term of a proven top tier NHL netminder because of the potential of a 1st year pro prospect. The "worst case" scenario is you end up with a proven NHL #1 and a protege #2, see Vancouver. Even in this scenario Howard won't have the anchor of a contract Luongo carries. Even then Mrazek would need to be locked up and he may choose to hit the open market. One in the net is worth 2 in the bush leagues. so you fans who believe Mrazek to be the next "Dominator" remember he backed up Belfour for two seasons. Even when moved to the Sabres he was a back-up. I can't remember the one guy's name but he was behind Fuhr until he got hurt. goalies take time and the results are unpredictable. Detroit has found a solid #1. I wonder what a goalie must do, slay a dragon(?) to win the hearts of some Wing fans? Achievements Jimmy Howard Medal record Competitor for United States Men's ice hockey World U18 Championships Gold 2002 Slovakia Ice hockey Holds University of Maine school record for shutouts, goals against average and save percentage. Goalie Salaries. How much is Howard worth?

4-5 million. 3-5 years. They may get creative on the length of term to lower the cap hit. Howard is a fixture in the Wings next for no less than 5 years.

    3/7 GDT : Oilers 0 at Red Wings 3

First period was tough to watch, but the game picked up in the 2nd. I was shocked Smith was the #2 star. I thought it wold be Howard, Kindl and Emmerton. Kindl was the only +2 on the Wings and Smith had a few turnovers. I thought Hank and Andersson were both oustanding. 2nd line - I now agree with those that want to put Andersson on that line. If he can handle playing D on top 6 level players, he would add more than Abby or Cleary, take your pick. The D is coming together just fine. don't move any of them. A big, puck moving group of solid skaters, with only 1 over 30. Keep Cola as the #7 and roll with it. This teams needs a top 6 forward and I do not believe they have one in the system. I think they will try and patch Bert together and mix and match when Fil and Sammie get back. Buy a few players out in the offseason and pick up a top 6 as teams jettison players to hit the cap. All in all a good win. Next up the Blue Jackets.

Time to pull the trigger on J-Bo?

I agree, NO d'man is close. The Wings in with Dekeyser may be Blashill. He coached him on college and would be his coach in GR. This kid is a solid prospect but because he is a free agent people go crazy. He will get the top entry level 2-way deal, as did Fabio. If he wants to stay home and be mentored unde his former coach, the Wings have a solid shot at signing him. He will need no less than 2-years of minors to be ready for the NHL. Will a young core of 6 have him move on to a team with a better opportunity to join a NHL roster, my hunch is yes. They all want to get paid. That means being in the NHL, even if on the worst team in the League. Kronner E Q Smith Kindl Lash ______ Things change, E may leave for greener pastures, Q may move, Kindl traded, whatever. Yet the Wings have a solid pipe line of d'men. Prediction - Canes. Good weather, Detroit based owner, chance to crack the line-up sooner, solid economy.

    Kindl

Being stalked while in Kitchener was not a pretty time. He actually has 3 or 4 fights in the AHL. Lets's just say.. he held his own and is best to keep the mitts on, but I give him credit for not backing down. Plus, a day in the life...
  22. heyfolks

Would you trade for Brian Campbell?

$7.1m, though the 15-16 season for a one dimensional, undersized d'man... no thanks. He will be one of the first buy outs in the offseason. Nobody will pick up that contract for that player unless they have some floor demands, like wiping his contract with it.

Time to pull the trigger on J-Bo?

At 6.68 million for next season.. NO WAY! I don't think the guy is worth that much jack under the new CBA. In addition, I just don't think this team can compete for the Cup this season. No matter what, because of the strike, the season is an asterik filled circus. Let the Wings roll with this group, sign who they can, prep a budget for 14-15 (E and Pavel) UFAs and then what for the players to get jettisonned in the off season < a ton of talent will hit the market. If any believe this team can compete for the Cup, ant in the Parity era that may be possible my question is this.. why go after d'man?! This team is in dire need of a top 6 forward, not a top 2 d'man.

Should Visors Be Mandatory In The NHL

Yes to visors and they should all put a chin guard, like yo see for those that play with jaw/mouth issues. That single bar would lower concussions with shots to the head. Laugh - I don't think Pat LaFontaine would care today, nor Lindros, Deadmarsh or many others who careers ended early by concussion or facial injuries. Bryan Berard, a NHL #1 nearly lost his eye at 23. He played with 20/400 vision in that eye. Visors are mandatory in the AHL and 68% in the NHL wear them today. http://deadspin.com/5988850/will-the-nhl-mandate-visors-before-someone-loses-an-eye-and-a-career I JUST do not understand how the players or owners do not move to protect the players with equipment changes clean up the dirty play. A guy like Matt Cooke is putting more than star players at risk (since the is not enough motivation) but organizational success, which translates to $$$$ lost.
