What’s in a Nickname? The Origins of All 30 NHL Team Names
Cern replied to CanadaBoy's topic in General
I also believe the logo was derived from a Montreal cycling club's logo Norris was affiliated with. -
Howard's short leash just got shorter in my book. He hasn't once showed me anything that tells me he's an NHL-calibre goalie.

CBC is covering the game, meaning you'll be able to watch the stream on cbcsports.ca - you'll likely need to set up a canadian proxy though, which isn't difficult

Yeah, court decisions that *don't* essentially guarantee an even worse financial season for a team being kept alive with OUR money are overrated anyway. If the attendance problem was bad in Phoenix before, Jobing.com arena is going to be a ghost town this year. The only person on the team most people in Arizona have any identity with is gone, and the team's future is now even more uncertain than it was when this thing started. The only good that will come of this is the League finding an owner who will move the team somewhere - ANYwhere at this point - within a season or two, until then it's yet again US who have to foot the bill for this cancer.

The worst part is, both parties had ample opportunity to avoid the legal mess this has become. If Basillie's 'Make it Seven' tagline extended beyond his own backyard there'd have probably been a bit more flexibility on relocation - with the whole Leafs-veto issue being made null and void. And had the League admitted from the start that hey, maybe just maybe the Coyotes can't survive in Phoenix after all, Basillie would probably either have been far more cooperative with the League with his relocation clause at least accepted as a possibility, or more favourable bids would probably have surfaced rendering Basillie irrelevant. The League has made that change recently, but far too late to provide any kind of saving-face. Everyone suffers because neither side was willing to give an inch.

The whole point of the series is that it's SEASON games played in Europe...

Shame he won't be back, it would have been quite something if he returned for a handful of games on Calgary's 30th anniversary.

Note to self: ginger ale stings a fair bit when you snort it

Didn't the wings lose all their preseason games in 02?
-
It's dependant on how guys like Helm and Leino wind up performing, but as-is I'm not seeing a Cup win with the roster. But the trade deadline could certainly have a positive influence.

Great for the team, bad for the franchise. Gretzky was the only thing about the Coyotes most people in Arizona had any real identity with, him gone leaves no recognizable face to draw people in.

Do the Cubs actually generate revenue? Because the Islanders sure don't.

Using past success as a get-out-of-jail-free card against a clear financial quagmire is ridiculous. The NHL is a buisness, not a museum.

40 teams?! The talent pool is already being stretched and the league is having enough financial trouble trying to run 30. The GOOD news is that at least Melrose's minimal plan appears to be the most popular by a big margin.

For what it's worth, the Tor-Pitt game has been a blast to watch.

Boston's kinda my east team on account of my dad, so it's nice having two WCs in a row featuring teams I actually have some empathy towards. Looks nice, I'll need to see how the brown looks in person, though.

My Bettman rubber stamp is worn almost clean through, my friend.

Just a cool little tidbit while I was watching the game: My mom works dispatch on Westjet (a growing airline based in Calgary which serves most of North America), basically she's in charge of arranging fuel loads, flight diversions, weather reports - everything short of physically flying the planes, essentially. Anyway, she was watching something else while I was watching the game on my laptop, but when I mentioned the game was in Terrace she suddenly got quite excited. She said on her shift today she was in charge of organizing the charter flight that took the Islanders to BC! Turns out she's done it for other teams in the past as well - she mentioned offhand she's directed a couple flights for the Wild. How neato is that?

Well, he did reunite the Grind Line when McCarty came back, that line is pretty ineffective nowadays and it was during a regular season game. And it's not like that lineup is a trainwreck waiting to happen - at worst they chip the puck down the ice at the first chance of possession and switch up the lines.
-
At least one of the games will be broadcast on CBC, if you set up a Canadian proxy (which isn't difficult) you'll be able to watch the stream on their site.
-
Awesome, it's on sportsnet. I might be able to see it on regular TV...
-
don't suppose there are any streams?
-
Maybe, though how long did it take to get the EDGE system from conceptualization to NHL approval? No way they'd have anything ready in time for the Winter Classic.
