Do you honestly think the young guys who are eager to contribute appreciate getting passed over for someone who makes the team worse? Do you honestly think Pav & Z want to spend their final years in the NHL on a mediocre team instead of chasing championships? Do you honestly think that Dan Cleary brings some amazing locker room intangible which apparently nobody else can that it justifies making the team worse? I don't need to be in the locker room to make an educated guess on that. And teaching these young guys that it's OK to be selfish and demand the team bend over backwards for you and only you isn't exactly what I would call a great example of 'leadership' or being a 'good locker room guy'. And your last line is exactly why I was saying he should have just retired. He's being vilified and it didn't have to go down this way, but again, he's brought this on himself by demanding that Holland honor his handshake deal after that horrid season he had last year. Edit: oh and who wouldn't want to be in Detroit, you want to know? Ask all the free agents that passed us up cuz our team is seriously mismanaged and going nowhere fast.

Last time was almost totally on Cleary. He was offered a 3-year deal by Ken, turned it down....and then came crawling back cuz his heart was still in Detroit? If that was the case he would have signed the first deal. It was only when he found out that every other team thinks he is worthless that he came back cuz his 'heart' was here. And this time around he won't give it up because of some 'handshake' deal that was made last time. He actually thinks he deserves special treatment after that god-awful season he had because of that 'handshake'. As much as I blame Holland for signing him (and I do quite a bit, for he has total power to just walk away and not sign him), even he knows what a bad deal this is. Already he's trying to pawn it off on players/coach & good/bad loyalty quotes. I can't be certain who initiated these talks but I'm sure his agent wasn't going to stop letting Holland know about that 'handshake'. And Holland to his greatest fault went for it. I know monetary wise it'd be stupid to turn it down, but all this talk of his 'leadership' is bulls*** because the guy isn't a leader. He's a hound chasing a squirrel. One of your 'team leaders' shouldn't be dragging the team down, especially if that is literally the only supposed thing he brings to the table. If he was truly a team leader he would be doing what is best for the team, and whats best for the team is him off of it.

Remember after the '13 playoffs, and even though we had just dropped a 3-1 series lead against the hawks, thinking "well at least next year we can improve by not having Cleary on the team".... Does Cleary not realize that he is making everybody hate him? He could have retired after that season and been remember as a warrior and contributor for his time with the Wings. Now the only thing main thing people are are going to remember about him is this f***in debacle two years in a row. He'll be remembered as the guy who made the wings worse because he was too selfish to just hang them up. He better hope like hell that this isn't the year they miss the playoffs because he will be the scapegoat for a LONG time (as well as Holland, he hasn't thought about his impending legacy as the guy who f***ed up the great Red Wings either)

So far we have quotes from Holland about the signing that say: (any others?) "My program has been one of loyalty and there's good and bad that goes with that. Way more good, in my opinion." "Who do I listen to on Cleary, the fans or the guys in the room, my players and my coach? Everybody wanted me to bring Cleary back." (This was last year by the way. You'd think he would have figured it out that this didn't work out so well!) So the players and coach are making the signings and there's bad aspects of being loyal, but were gonna do it anyway cuz I'm just doing what they want... Great Ken! Real ******* Great!

Did he also forget about what was said by his coach, his captain, and his other star players after being demolished by Boston? Something along the lines of "We're not good enough" (Babs, I think) and "We need to get better" (Hank, I think) and "We want to compete for a Cup next year" (Pavel, I think) I mean christ, take a freakin hint dude!!

I was just going to post that. What exactly does Holland expect his fellow teammates to say about him? Of course they are gonna say they 'enjoy' having him around. Of course they are going to say they 'want' him back because if he does end up back in the locker room it would create unneeded friction. It's up to Holland to read between the lines here and make the best decision for the team. And I would bet some serious money (if I had any) that nobody he asked talked about wanting him back because of his on-ice play and performances or how he could help the team win games. It was probably all lip service to his 'leadership' (not seeing much of that anymore, otherwise he would show the younger guys how to walk away when you know you're hurting the team), or his 'locker room presence' (Is there nobody else on the team who can inspire our guys? Our captain who battles more than anybody can't so that? Aflie, who was captain in Ottawa for how long? Pavel? Kronwall?). All he's done by coming back is piss off our prospects, guys who could be the future of the team. I can't think of any other organization that pisses on it's prospects the way Detroit does. It'd be fine if you already had a stacked team and were competing for Cups. I'm sure they would understand in that situation. But this?....

Brendan Morrow (13 G, 25 Pts last year) sign in Tampa for 1.55 million. And we got Cleary (8 freakin points) for 2.5 million? In Kenny We...I can't, I just can't. With hindsight I can't believe that was the motto for so long.

Cleary has brought this on himself. He shouldn't be anywhere near an NHL rink. If there was any other way to keep him off the ice and draggin this team down, then I would obviously prefer that option. It's not like suggesting someone go and shatter his leg if they see him walking down the street. A pulled muscle from overworking himself isn't going to ruin his life. But I'll flat out say it. I don't care if you personally think it's bad taste. At this point, if him getting hurt keeps him off the ice, so be it.

Don't worry. Sure we'll lose some of those prospects on waivers. But we can get them back by trading a 1st rounder for them in a few years!!

No vote as I can't pick just one. I can eliminate Modano, but after that I just can't narrow it down between the other EIGHT ******* choices.

It's not about the money. It's about making the team better. This signing makes the team worse. And not only worse this season but for seasons to come, because now everybody knows that the Wings don't care about winning. Free agents aren't going to want to sign with the Wings if they know they can't win here and kids aren't going to want to get drafted by the Wings because they know they'll never get a shot to play and contribute here.

Is there a petition we can get going around and maybe get it before Chris Ilitch's eyes or something? Ken Holland is just god awful. He's like that crazy guy who thinks the end of the world is going to be the best thing that could ever happen because he's going to get raptured, so he starts launching nukes to bring it about..... ....alright that might be overboard but still, you get the idea. He seems to be willfully running the once great Wings into the ground and its infuriating.

I think it would lighten the mood in the locker room if they had a team/teammates that they could be proud of and have confidence in. I don't understand telling Alfie (who was actually pretty good last year, and actually has great leadership) he has to wait and see if he's healthy enough to play, but Cleary, who can barely stand up (and even if he could is totally useless anyway) gets a pass.

I don't think bringing back the worst player on the team is going to lighten the mood in the locker room...

Why wouldn't Holland be getting discussed in a thread about him signing someone to a contract? You're free to not read this thread and go into one where this isn't being talked about, or even (gasp) not being on the site at all right now if you know you're not going to like the discussion taking place. If I didn't want to read all this then I wouldn't be in here....simple.
