NHL players will not participate in 2018 Olympics (Mod Post #99)
roboturner replied to DatsyukianDekes's topic in General
If they aren't getting more money, then who cares if you have to pay them for two weeks now or not pay them for two weeks and add that amount to other paychecks. I'm not really seeing an issue here. And the owners aren't losing profit. Every team get 41 home games every year. Even during Olympic years. So yeah, the areas aren't bringing in any money for two weeks. During these years, those games are squeezed into to other weeks. Again, not losing money. Not really seeing an issue with this either. ...And yes, you could have a 15 team league. More talent on each team, prime locations ===>less teams losing money, more profitable league -

I don't really think they are. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but if a player has a contract that pays them say $5 million for an 82 game NHL season, why would you think they have to pay them any differently for an 82 game NHL season with a two week break in the middle. If the owners are so worried about losing money/profits during the olympic break then maybe the team is somewhere where it shouldn't be to begin with. And if they were really worried about "protecting their investments", they wouldn't be locking the players away from team training staffs every few years and forcing the player to go "potentially get injured" with an overseas team. What it boils down to is, its only 2-3 weeks every 4 years. I could see if they were held every year or even every two years, but every 4 years?? F***in deal with it. -

Who is watching these games?? A bunch of people who otherwise wouldn't be watching Hockey. Who is watching Olympic Bobsledding or Speed Skating or Curling or any Olympic Sport? Probably not a whole lot of people that follow those sports outside of the Olympics. This is their chance to get fresh eyeballs on their sport and plant the seed in people's mind that this might be something they would enjoy seeing more of. Or what happens if they both play great, get a confidence boost coming back to the Wings, go on a tear and win the Stanley Cup. I mean any player could get in a car accident on their way to the arena everyday, but would you want to physically stop them from getting to the games just in case something happens? Should they all be required to live in a building attached to the rink so that cant happen? They are Hockey Players! Let Them Play Hockey!! -

I think this is a bad move. Doesn't anybody remember the last Olympics?? USA vs Canada Gold Medal game goes to overtime, the game got huge ratings and that undoubtedly got more people interested in the game of Hockey/NHL. I mean you get 2 weeks of huge advertising for your sport, while losing no regularly scheduled games, and the owners are going to complain about this?? Are they f***ing kiding me? (oh but if THEY shut down the league with NO games being played, they lose fans, they become a joke of a sport; thats all GREAT for the game of Hockey hey??) -
14 GOALS FOR NYQUIST! 9 IN HIS LAST 9 GAMES!!! Good call to leave him in the minors to start the season!!

Yeah I didn't really get this mindset either. There is more than enough Vet presence on the ice and in the locker room. Absolutely no need to resign a broken down Cleary for those roles. Lets just thank the Universe Cleary turned down that rumored initial offer of 3 YEARS and who cares whatever dollar amount it was! The kids have proven what a dangerous team this can be with them on it and it shouldn't have taken half the season and a TON of injuries to ice the best possible line-up.

I love Alfie!! and what a pass by Abs!!
-
Howard is currently ranked 32 in wins for goalies (with 11) and 40th! for save percentage (.913). Ryan Miller of the Buffalo Sabres (yes those terrible, terrible sabers) is ranked 25th in wins (with 14!) and 20th in save percentage (.923) Its just not good enough And he must be getting money under the table for all of these late period goals. I've never seen so many goals scored with under a minute left than I have since Howard took over.

Howie boasting a solid 50% Save Percentage. Couldn't make a bailout save for his life.

and I didn't talk about politics I talked about how they generally could be relevant to the conversation in these situations and listed other HOCKEY situations in which they were

aaaaaand of course someone deleted my post when i specifically asked that it not be deleted due to having a different opinion than the moderator.... Edit: aaaaand more of my post are being edited. Seriously Mods you don't have to run this place like a communist dictatorship.

That would be one hell of a dilemma to be in, hey? I can't even fathom what Pavel would do/where his "loyalties" would lie.

Apparently Bert broke his stick upon learning he was not playing today. Maybe that'll get him going. Though its gotta be frustrating being scratched over Cleary. I realized Bert hasn't looked great, but hes been better than Clears.
-
I'm glad Alfie is back in, just wish it was Cleary sitting and not Bert who would come in handy during a shootout. Cleary brings nothing to this team and surely his PK spot could be better utilized with one of the kids.
-
It just too bad it's been the "wrong" people out. Imagine these kids with a healthy Pav, Mule, Ericsson, Helm... Subtract the dead weight and we have a very dangerous lineup. (Maybe not dangerous but at least competitive)
-
I guess if that's true (at this point only speculation) I wouldn't blame him too much. It's his last chance to represent his country on the Big Stage.

GDT 1/18 GDT: Kings 2 @ Red Wings 3 (Shootout)

Whaaaaaat?!!!!! That's kinda bulls***. Awesome bulls***, though. -
You guys remember that scene in Little Big League, where Mac is telling Billy that if he's getting this excited over one single from his favorite player, that it might be time to let him go? I think we've reached that point with Cleary. Sure, it was nice to see him put one in the net (it was a nice shot too!), but it's time to make the tough decision. (I can just picture Babs, "Somebody offered me a Mark Messier card for yours, and I wouldn't do it!")
-
Lets be honest, he looked horrible on the powerplay. Two PP dump ins and two times the Kings got it and cleared down ice.

Again!!

I took this not as a "comeback" comeback, but as him just wanting to play some organized hockey after getting "the itch" during the alumni game. Skating around is fun and all, but it doesn't compare to an organized game. Now he has that in the local ECHL team where he lives. If that leads him to the AHL or possibly NHL interest, then more power to him. But I wouldn't be surprised if he finds himself content with the local ECHL team. Edit:

Jimmy is back!!! He won't see a minute of ice time in Sochi, horrible pick. At least I can root for Sweden when US sucks it up!

That was some great stick handling, great shot, and great play taking advantage of the defender without a stick. Well Done Tats!!
