    Janik's waiver status

I'm fine with them waiving Janik (rather than having to lose someone) if they claim Kronwall. Curious question: Whether than having to waive a #6 d-man that's been doing well, what are the chances that they use Meech as a spare forward on the 4th line again?

Only one response I can think of to show my thoughts on this policy: Cocksucker.

    The Next Red Wings Dynasty...

Irrelevant? These sorts of posts are, in fact, a perfect usage of this board (much better than 'x player is lazy and he sucks because he hasn't had consecutive hat tricks while simultaneously shutting out the other teams' posts). However, I do agree there. There are some changes that could be made there.. but this is an excellent idea for a more lighthearted discussion. I think the Wings future looks to be a solid and interesting one. Let's work in the possibilities of FAs and some possible roster advancements as you note. First, however, contracts: Zetterberg - 6. Not changing anytime soon Datsyuk - 6.7. Ditto. Franzen - 3.9. Again Kronwall: Will probably have a raise by this point. Let's assume something realistic for a 50 point d-man with hard hitting and mostly solid D, at LEAST 5.5 Flip: Might still be at 3. Hudler: 2.8 Cleary: 2.8 -- If he re-signs at that value. Howard: Let's assume the best and say he's an at least mid quality starter. 4 seems fair for his first big contract. Stuart: 3.75 Ericsson: I suspect after next year he'll warrant the same 3 that Kronwall and Flip got. Kindl: Let's say 1.1 Leino: if he improves and manages to stay, let's say he gets himself a contract at 1.5 Helm, Abs, and Eaves for a combined 3 (that might be undercutting the 3 as a whole slightly) Tatar, Mursak: .9 each Smith: .9 Fornier: .6 NiCastro: .6 Meech: .5 Miller: .7 Some goalie, perhaps Larsson or McC: .7 That works out to about 52. Lets say the cap is 57. That leaves 5 to play with. Suppose a guy like Leino isn't reupped, that's 6.5 to play with. There's enough money in there to sign a top pairing d-man or first line forward. Depth doesn't appear to be an issue. Datsyuk - Zetterberg - Cleary Hudler/Tatar? - Flip - Franzen Abs/Eaves - Helm - Hudler/Tatar Miller - Abs/Mursak - Eaves/Mursak Kronwall - FA Stuart - Ericsson Kindl - Smith Fournier/Nicastro Meech Howard Larsson/McC or Datsyuk - Zetterberg - FA Cleary - Flip - Franzen Hudler - Helm - Abs/Eaves Tatar - Mursak - Eaves/Abs Kronwall - Ericsson Stuart - Kindl Smith - Fournier/Nicastro Fournier/Nicastro Meech Howard Larsson/McC I like the first of those two better in the short term, but I think with our defensive prospect depth the latter works out better in the long term, especially since we need pure goalscoring talent (and if a physical/net presence comes along with that, all the better). Looks pretty damned solid to me either way, though. Edit: I'm not saying this is going to be fully accurate or what have you, just trying to give a reasonable perspective with somewhat realistic (perhaps a touch optimistic) contracts, as well as hopes that Wings players/prospects fulfill their potential.

    Leino in, May out tonight

That's not an issue of grammar. That's an issue of failing to read my post.

    Leino in, May out tonight

I go to say -some- similarities, and then he goes to point out a difference as if that invalidates a comparison in which I specifically used a non-quantitative value.

    Leino in, May out tonight

I know English isn't your first language, but you speak (or at least type) it better than many native speakers, so in summary: epic fail at missing the word 'some.'

Wanna know the name of another player who you could've said some of this about until he fixed his attitude and was given more of a chance than the doofuses here would've given him? Dan Cleary

    If Howard becomes the "guy".....

All things considered, I think this is the perfect situation to usher Jimmy into playoff play provided his good play continues. The Wings org have already stated they would be happy making it to the 2nd round this year; they know they're on a retool year (and while a cup would be a most welcomed blessing, there are stronger contenders this year). This makes it an excellent year to take a chance with a goaltender who could potentially become huge and help lead the team beyond where they could get otherwise (I'm not saying Ozzie is incapable of such, mind). If nothing else, it's a good chance for Howie to get some playoff experience, and he knows he can do so and play without breaking unrealistically high expectations this year, and with someone solid (and whom he seems to look up to) backing him up.

    (Staffan) Kronwall on Waivers

Not to tease, 55, but that sounds like a good country song in the making (if there is such a thing).

    Leino in, May out tonight

Being realistic is saying that Leino is currently a bust. Hoping that he'll just pack up and go back to Finland (rather than the preferable move, which would be to improve and make an impact at the NHL level) isn't being realistic, it's being a short-sighted, selfish jackass. And that sums up many fans for you, sadly. X player isn't playing well for the team in his first full time year at said level, and as such he has committed a grave personal insult against me!

Go Leino! Tear s*** up! (Seriously, some of you people here act like you WANT him to be a bust)

    (Staffan) Kronwall on Waivers

Oh jeez, pick him up, please. The sort of large, physical d-man we need, NHL #6 quality, another swede, brother to one of our big guys. I'm not usually one to come out and say 'git 'r' done' with things like these, but man, for his salary and the worst repercussion being having to waive someone like Lebda, this is worth it.

    Praise for Doug Janik

Let's not start that up again!

    So pretty

A rookie who's played 10 less games than Howard, it should be noted. 28/44 GP is 1A or starter numbers. Don't get me wrong, Toucan is a phenomenal young goalie who should be getting more time, but credit where credit's due to Jimmy.

    Midseason Awards

Hart: Ryan Miller Lady Byng: Dats or St. Louis Vezina: Ryan Miller Calder: Howard (homer vote, but valid) Norris: Keith Jack Adams: Babs! (Not sure he'll get it, but keeping a team this injured where it is? Yea. If the Wings make the POs..) Selke: Dats again (Don't think he'll get it, however)

    Red Wings of the Decade

    1. Lidstrom 2. Lidstrom 3. Lidstrom 4. Lidstrom etc... Seriously though.. hmm. First two are easy: 1. Lidstrom - Ridiculously obvious 2. Yzerman - Same Gets harder from here: 3. Datsyuk - Leading scorer for several years, btb selke winner, 4x byng, highlight reels, fan favorite 4. Zetterberg - Smythe, scoring, defense, leader, Datsyuk's translator 5. Osgood - Amazing, clutch playoff performances Even more difficult... 6. Draper - Has been a huge part of this team all decade.. faceoffs, Selke defense, leadership, he even scored a few goals once upon a time. 7. Holmstrom - A huge part of this team's offense has been based around this guy's antics for the majority of this decade, and particularly post-lockout. 8. Hasek - Let's not forget he gave us several years of good goaltending. 9. Shanahan - While not as big as he was in the 90s, was still a very important part of this team for the first chunk of the decade. 10. Chelios - The leadership, mentoring, and so on he brought to the team over most of the 2000s was pretty awesome. Also, 01-02 Yea, no Feds. Now, if this were a 90s thread...

Greatest individual performances of the decade

There's one missing on this list that absolutely, positively deserves to be there: J.S. Giguere in the 02-03 playoffs. A goalie winning the smythe isn't all that common, nor is a player on the losing team. A goalie winning the Smythe on the losing team is amazingly noteworthy, and it speaks highly of his absolutely disgustingly good performance. That's my vote.

Would you take Ilya Kovalchuk if Lidstrom retires?

No, Ilya Kovalchuk is a horrible player. I would never want him on any team I root for regardless of available cap space. In all seriousness, though, I have my doubts as to whether Kovalchuk would want to come here. Really close to that Canadian media he so dislikes...

I Can't Believe Wings Fans Are Booing Hossa

That's funny, I don't see a Habs logo anywhere on your profile.

Craig Adams hit on Daniel Alfredsson

Adams led a bit high with that and Alfredsson didn't have much of anywhere to go with someone behind him. Reminds me a bit of the Pronger and Holmstrom thing from a couple playoffs prior, but not quite as blatantly dirty. I don't think it was an intentionally dirty play, but it was definitely a high hit that could have perhaps used better judgement.

I Can't Believe Wings Fans Are Booing Hossa

I find it rather tasteless, to be honest. Count me on the bandwagon of those who was against Pitt fans booing him last year, and Detroit fans have even less reason to do so. Sure guys, let's boo a guy that was near a PPG with reduced icetime and defensively responsible, as well as forcing his way through the playoffs with a major shoulder injury, just because we didn't have the capspace to re-sign him. Get real, guys...
