Grading the Red Wings: Midseason report card

Hahaha, completely destroy my argument why dontcha? Alright, maybe I should say what the Red Wings organization expects of him and not LGW

    Bruins fans are dumb...

With a team with 2 multiple Norris winners, 2 selke winners, another finalist, and loaded with defensively responsible players in general, and with the league once again shifting towards more goals, I'll take the more offensively talented, scrappy guy who, despite his size, frequently goes to the net, over a fast PKing center any day (it's not like we don't have players like Darren Helm waiting for a chance). As eva pointed out, I think a lot of you are underestimating Hudler's current skating ability. He also protects the puck surprisingly well using his low center of gravity.. I think I see Flip giving it up entering the zone more than Hudler. I think his ice time is mostly a developmental issue. We know Holland and Co. doesn't like bringing up the youngins early, yet they did with Hudler.. and I think the current amount of ice time he gets is enough to let his abilities shine and develop without dumping too much responsibility on him. I dunno about best forward in a few years, but I can certainly see him becoming a first liner if his strength and skating continues to develop. Has it not yet been mentioned that he's also a top 3/4 shootout choice among the likes of 3 of the NHL's top 20 forwards? I think a lot of you overestimate size as well.. much more important is your strength relative to your mass and how well you use your center of gravity. Or perhaps some of you have missed 5'11" 195 lb. Datsyuk absolutely splattering 6'9 270 lb Chara with a hit. Actual mass is mostly important when you're Chris Pronger and you see (insert star player)'s numbers, and have 5+ steps to drill his face into the boards.

If the Phoenix Coyotes folded today . . .

I know. Baja was thrown in there just for lulz, though I'm waiting for the day that the NHL's southern expansion brings a team to Mexico City.

    Midseason Awards

Yea.. the only reason I agree with the Backstrom pick over Mason is because of the 10 game difference between them with similar stats. as BeeRYCE pointed out. You could argue the Minny system, but in that case you should strip some Vezinas and such from Brodeur and some Jennings and maybe a cup or two from Ozzy, but just.. no.

    Midseason Awards

Actually not a horrible list, though I'd argue with a couple. Kinda hard to give Geno a Hart when his team doesn't even have a playoff berth at the moment. Geno's Hart finalist position last year was well earned for tearing ass when Crosby and MAF were out. A fully healthy Pens team, on the other hand (not like this one is) would be about as likely to have a Hart winner as the Wings. The Hart nowadays seems to be handed mostly to spectacular players on unspectacular teams, generally with someone that carries their team into the playoffs. Sorta like a 'Biggest Loser' award. Some people will argue Minny's system, but Backstrom is as solid a Vezina pick as any of the other frontrunners at this point. If Mason continues his level of play throughout the season, he's my Calder pick, too. I have to continually remind myself that the Norris isn't for defensive play, but rather, for defensemen. That can range from Chris Chelios defense to Paul Coffey offense. That in mind, Boyle is a respectable choice, though there are others I'd give it to ahead of him. Selke -- I can't justify giving this to someone other than Datsyuk right now.. of the top 5 in takeaways, he has by far the lowest number of giveaways, and the best ratio. He also has the best TA:GA ratio for first line players. Mike Richards is at something like 37:48 TA:GA, Datsyuk is at 47:23. Mike Richards also has 3x the PIM as Datsyuk. Putting your team on the PK doesn't exactly help defense. Richards leads in hits with about 2x the hits -- though, from what I've seen, Datsyuk has more of the big, open ice hits. Richards also has about 4x the shots blocked of Datsyuk.. then again, I imagine that's a stat that the Flyers have to exercise a lot more than the Wings, considering the dominance of the Wings puck possession. Another stat where Richards leads Datsyuk is TOI and PKTOI.. but again, that's a team "issue", especially considering the Flyers injury situation. Richards has 4 SHG as compared to Datsyuk's 1, but then again, compare their PKTOI and the PIM totals of the two teams and I think you'll see Richards gets at least a few more chances to do so. In all other stats (points, +/-, etc) Datsyuk and Richards are very close. As for the Adams, Claude Julien is certainly deserving thus far.. though it's going to be ridiculous if Babs doesn't get one sooner or later. Byng -- Datsyuk has 6 less PIMs and a few more hits than Parise with about 1:00 extra TOI/G. Parise certainly isn't a bad choice, but we could once again hear a heavily accented one-liner when this award is handed out. Masterton -- Yea, probably. Edit: Datsyuk is 2nd in TAs and has by far the best TA:GA ratio out of anyone in the top 100 for TAs except Kesler, who is top 10 in TAs as well. Given his other stats, Kesler would be my only other choice for Selke, though given how the voters value points for Selkes nowadays (???) I'd call it a Datsyuk lock.

    fall of the wings

    ..in a pear tree?

    Pronger

Yea, I'd take Pronger over Lidstrom too.

    Keeping "The Big 3"

With that plan we'd be over the cap. Gotta lose Sammy and take 1/3 of Hudler, Mule, or Flip.

Grading the Red Wings: Midseason report card

I wouldn't disagree with that... the main reason I gave Drapes a full C is he's still our faceoff guy for big matchups. Zetterberg appears to be back on track, but he did have a pretty brutal goal-less period by his standards this quarter, so I can see why you'd give him a B.

Grading the Red Wings: Midseason report card

Taking into account the whole season, I fully agree with you. I was mainly grading based on this quarter. I probably should have clarified that. I believe Kronwall is on the rise, by the way, but he was regularly making mistakes I would expect out of.. well, Lebda.. until recently.

If the Phoenix Coyotes folded today . . .

I doubt the Communist Party NHL Board of Directors would allow a team to fold, but rather, move it somewhere.. like, you know, Kansas City, or Las Vegas, or Baja California.

Thread should be renamed to "Sun: Rose in the east today"

    Bruins fans are dumb...

Lidstrom looks good because he's part of an excellent system, in which Zetterberg looks amazing because of Datsyuk, who only looks good because he plays in front of an excellent blueline, which reminds me of Rafalski, who looks excellent because he plays on the PP with the likes of hot offensive players like Hudler, whose defensive weaknesses are covered by Filppula, who only appears great defensively because he plays with veteran grinders like Maltby (who is old and washed up, by the way) on the PK, or with players like Samuelsson and Cleary, who couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with their shots, but still put up great numbers, because they're part of a great system, in which a roster barely better than that of Atlanta minus Kovalchuk can win multiple President's Trophies and Stanley Cups. Right? RIGHT?

Grading the Red Wings: Midseason report card

My own take on it, where A is 100% and A+ is 110% .. this is based on expectations of the player, not a comparison. Dan Cleary: B Pavel Datsyuk: A+ Kris Draper: C Valtteri Filppula: C+ Johan Franzen: A- Tomas Holmstrom: A- Marian Hossa: A- Jiri Hudler: A+ Tomas Kopecky: C+ Kirk Maltby: B Darren McCarty: N/A Mikael Samuelsson: B Henrik Zetterberg: B+ Chris Chelios: N/A Nicklas Kronwall: C- Brett Lebda: B- Nick Lidstrom: A- Andreas Lilja: A Derek Meech: A+ Brian Rafalski: B+ Brad Stuart: B Ty Conklin: A Chris Osgood: C Some ratings explained: This previous quarter has been a much better one for the Wings; while they've still blown a handful of games to some loser teams, they've also absolutely handed a couple of the hottest teams in the West their arses. Some players in particular I thought deserved notice: Datsyuk: He not only looks great, he makes his opponents look bad. Homer: Only gets a knock because his production is down lately, but his game is quite dependent on bounces. His defense has been solid and his play has been physical, however. Conklin: Has not only been more than adequate for the 'backup' job the Wings got him for, but his SV% has been skyrocketing and he holds a good # of shutouts. Hossa: Has been doing about what we all realistically expected, I think. A little room for improvement, but he's adapted further to the team. Meech: Has put in consistently strong effort every time he's been given ice team, using his speed well and, when he's on D, joining the rush smartly. Lilja: Has not only done everything we expect of him, but has even shown a decent dedication to offense. His play has been so solid that there's even Lilja 'apologists' popping up. Hudler: Has kicked ass offensively, and even made some clever grabs on the forecheck. Lidstrom: Slowly starting to look like Norris Nick again. The D as a whole: Steadily improving. Osgood: An eye should be kept on him, as he appears to be on the upswing again.

    Introducing the LOLHL

Making a vague (though crude) sexual innuendo reference towards someone's girlfriend: 6 games, anger management, and no icetime. Biting someone's thumb so hard their glove comes off: 2 games. If the NHL's method to determining suspensions could be represented in a mathematical formula, I wonder if seeing it would instantly turn someone into a raving, suicidal lunatic.

Can you imagine how much this board would be storming if the Wings didn't capitalize on a double minor? f***, when's the last time the Wings had a double minor to capitalize on?

12/10: San Jose Sharks @ Vancouver Canucks

Do they capitalize... (Hopefully not, the Capitals lost tonight)

I love this league's consistency. That funny little holding the stick penalty on Daniel Sedin, compared to that 4 seconds of holding the stick in the Wings game earlier that wasn't called.. Eesh.
