Should the Winter Classic become the All-Star Game?

What we may see with the southern cities is them playing in a 'neutral' northern city or the like. And the Winter Classic =/= the Superbowl, while not every city has a chance at hosting every year, every team has a chance to participate every year.

    Icetime around the NHL

It's a testament to our depth that our top players don't have to take as much ice time and we still have one of the best records in the league. It most definitely will make a difference in the late stages.

    Thank you laryngitis

I would like Emrick as a commentary guy or analyst, or something along those lines. Just not as play-by-play. He has certain vocal quirks that drive me up the wall.

    Michigan votes for Toronto.....

Not nearly as epic as Nashville/Phoenix. Hosted in Phoenix of course.

    Burnside: Hockey's home run

That would be a clever way of doing it. Maybe the league will find an interesting thing to do that favors hosting in the south. Whatever that would be. Unless anyone here can think of a way to make a Winter Classic hosted in the south seem anything other than ridiculous, that is. Hm. If they fix the All Star Game (remove fan voting, move it til after the season), they could host those in southern rinks. And the skills competition and all that jazz. But the Winter Classic just has such greater seating capacity.. Eh. It's hard to find a way in which the southern teams don't get screwed. Oh well, go Wings!

    Claude Lemieux

Just read in a couple posts on hfboards quoting an article that Turtle is going to attempt a comeback, is willing to play for cheap and work his way up through the AHL and so forth. Been conditioning for 10 weeks, or something like that. Just a moment and I'll edit in a link.. The promised edit: http://hfboards.com/showthread.php?t=554336 And here's the translated article if you don't want to go through there (compliments to sebster03 a la google translation?): "Here is a translation of the article. Goggle translation sucks Claude who is 43 years of age indicated that he will return to the game of hockey, more then 5 years after he had played in his last game in the NHL. Lemieux has training intensively for the past 10 weeks. He has skated with current players of the Phoenix Coyotes, but he hasn't agreed to any form of deal with any team of the NHL. "It's evident that the majority of people will think that I'm crazy..." says Lemieux. "I miss being with the players and I miss the sensation of being on the ice. We only have one life and if we feel something in our hearts or in our heads, we must try it out." And to show his determination on returning in the NHL, CLaude Lemieux says that he is ready to spend the time needed in the AHL. "It's not a question of money. I don't won't to negotiate for a contract worth several millions. It will be up to me to prove myself and maybe in the AHL level. The team who would give me a chance will not regret their decision" Lemieux adds. He, who won 4 times the Stanley Cup with the Canadien, Devils and the Avalanche is convinced that he can still help a NHL team. In his last season, in 2002-2003, Lemieux obtained 20 points in 68 games." Sorry LePew, you already got your ass beat by D-mac, don't come in second place again by trying to mirror his comeback. Flame away, LGW.

Yea, I noticed that the other day. Why is it my most successful thread has to be about Claude ******* Lemieux?

Nah, Miami. Or Atlanta. You can't go wrong with those venues.

Should the Winter Classic become the All-Star Game?

The All-Star game is a frigging joke at the moment. I'm not opposed to its existence, but it needs a serious overhaul. The main problem is fan voting. It will always favor very good players in great markets over excellent players in crappy markets. And that was before the age of internet voting, which is an absolute train wreck. I'm not against some sort of fan voting, but not for the roster, which will always result in homerism. Let the fans vote for aspects of the game that's not related to any specific team or player. While I don't have a list of such at the moment, I'm sure you could gather a very interesting list from any number of hockey fan forums. I love the Winter Classic, but there are a few gripes I have with it. First is that it will take a total of 15 years (13 now) for every team to have been represented. I know that doesn't seem bad to us Wings fans, because we just got done wasting the Hawks, but TB fans or such could be waiting another 13. That's a long time to wait. As far as I know, there's no other event in any mainstream sport that involves having specific teams having to wait so long for a chance at something (except the Cubbies! ). That's also a full 30 year rotation to have it feature in each team's town. Seeing as the Wings just played, we likely won't see a game in Detroit for atleast 14 years, and as many as 28. Now, All-Star game hosting faces the same problem as above, but it's not linked so much to any specific team, but rather the league and it's star players. Now, let's assume that the All-Star game's huge problems are worked out. You merge the All-Star game with the Winter Classic. Suddenly, the Winter Classic isn't linked to any team at all. You don't even have to play it in a city that has an NHL team! (though you certainly might want to). Wings fans are gonna watch the Wings play whether its in Detroit or not. Habs fans are gonna watch them play whether its in Montreal or not. If you drop a big game in a city that doesn't have an NHL team, people are gonna show up anywhere.. people and families disperse (hell, look at how many Wings fans ARENT in Detroit), and even non-hockey fans are gonna be attracted to a venue, if nothing else for the spectacles that come along with it. Parents taking their kids for an exciting event and what not. Anyhow, it could work, but not before the All-Star game ceases to suck. I'd be just as happy seeing the Winter Classic replace the All-Star game. s***ty sport for All-Star matchups anyhow; it's not like baseball where there's a low chance of injury. It's a heavy contact sport with very regular injuries. Right now, the All-Star game is just a chance for a team to have it's marquee players injured mid-season with no benefit to them. The Pro Bowl doesn't take place mid-season for a reason.

    Burnside: Hockey's home run

Indeed. It'll be interesting to see how they let the southern teams participate. I expect a lot of North-South matchups with the North hosting.

    Winter Classic Jersey

I loved them, personally. Classic colors, an oldschool look with the patterns without looking corny, the old english D gives a sense of an overall Detroit spirit perfect for special games.. and NO BLACK. I don't know if I'd want it to be the 3rd jersey, something that looks similar to it would be great. My ideal third jersey look for the Wings is the same colors, a design that looks retro but not silly, the winged wheel or the D works for me (or both).. overall, the words I'd use are distinguished, tradition, and (dare I say it here) classy.

Where do you want the next Winter Classic be?

Either New York Rangers or Boston, with the matchup between both of those teams. A hockey game in one of the stadiums of a huge baseball rivalry, plus an original six matchup.. would be frigging epic. Though, to be fair, I think that a Canadian team could get a turn, too. Montreal vs Boston? Toronto vs One of the better southern teams, like San Jose maybe? That way you play somewhere cold but one of the southern teams with a viewership gets watched.. f***, you could put the Thrashers against the Leafs and it would draw high viewers.

Yea, I'm liking that line. They were out there with Lids-Raffi a lot. You could put Datsyuk out there with 4 stunned rabbits and Cloutier and he'd still get stuff done.

Wings Win! Despite some officiating adversity, their puck control was excellent given the circumstances and Conks pretty much shut it down after the 1st.
