More proof that Ovechkin is basically awesome
Coolio Mendez replied to omnipotent_hudler's topic in General
I can't tell you what happens in the locker room, but I know his teammates love him. I'll even dig up quotes for you. Eric Christenson "We'd all love to be Sidney Crosby, but some of the stuff he has to go through, we'd all get a little sick of it. That's how any normal person would feel. But he just seems to handle it so well. He's the ambassador to the game, so he takes it all in stride." Georges Laraque "Everywhere we go he gets this attention. He's a great ambassador. Hockey is lucky in the fact Mario and Wayne were great ambassadors on and off the ice. Crosby is taking over from them. He handles himself really good in front of the cameras. We're just lucky the NHL has such a great kid to be the face of the NHL." And I'm done with this thread were all entitled to our own opinions. -
I've posted this in another thread. Pittsburgh Penguins' franchise record for assists in a season by a rookie Pittsburgh Penguins' franchise record for points in a season by a rookie First rookie to record 100 points and 100 penalty minutes in a season Youngest player in NHL history to record 100 points in a season Youngest player in NHL history to record 200 career points Youngest player in NHL history to have 2 consecutive 100 point seasons. Youngest player to be voted to the NHL All-Star Game Youngest player in NHL history to win the Art Ross Trophy Youngest player in NHL history to win the Lester B. Pearson Award Youngest player in NHL history to be named to the First All-Star Team Youngest player in NHL history to be named a full team captain He is the seventh player in NHL history to earn the three highest honours, which are the highest individual awards for an NHL forward. Are you sure he's overrated? He sure as hell seems to be living up to his expectations, keep in mind these records were set during HIS TEENAGE YEARS!

Dammit I have to be invited to comment, I have some valid points I want to throw out.

How do you know this for sure? At the age of 19 Crosby was told to bring the NHL to a new level. He was still a TEENAGER. How many 19 year olders can handle this kind of pressure. He's a smart kid and his comments are always appropriate, your always reading how immature Sidney is on the site but the fact nobody knows the facts. There's pressure on Sidney, the kind of pressure that comes from maybe being the best player in the NHL . But he wants to be part of the elite. He wants his face on commercials. He's not hiding. He's putting himself out there. The NHL NEEDS that. And taking, that's the responsibility that comes with being a marquee player. So now.... please tell me why you think he only has the C because of his talent. -

So your judging his career on 6 games? According to Babcock, Sidney Crosby was the best player on the ice for most of the series. I'm having a fantasy hockey pool around October I'll be sure to have you in there if you prefer guys like Samuelson over Crosby. -

Are you sure he hasn't lived up to the hype? Scary thing is he's only 20. Malkin better have been the most important player during the regular season, CROSBY WAS INJURED FOR HALF OF IT. -

First guy to make sense on this thread, sorry to break you guys but Crosby is the best player in the league. 27 out of the 30 GM's would agree that Crosby is the best player in the league. Don't you think the GM's know a little more hockey then an average fan? Ovechkin is a goal scorer, a sniper, just an upgraded version of Kovalchuck. Crosby is a playmaker, an all around hockey player, as much as I hate to see this but has the best hockey sense I've seen since Wayne Gretzky. Sorry but this is the stupidest comment I've read all day. When Sidney Crosby singed with Pittsburgh do you think he choose to be the face of the NHL? One thing you have to understand is that Americans will not ACCEPT a European superstar. Call us stupid, small minded whatever we just won't. Thats a huge reason why hockey will never be big in the United States, there is NO American superstar who dominates the game, and Crosby is the closest thing to an American Superstar, (North American). Hence soccer, the most popular sport in the WORLD but no American superstar, means no American popularity. -
Chicago was on the list. San Fran only has a couple of sports teams, same deal with San Diego so I don't really see why they would complain. ESPN does this list every year, Detroit usually ranks in 2nd or 3rd usually after Boston. If you want to base it on who develops the most athletes Michigan would also be up there, like I said I don't really see where you or the writer are coming from sorry.

Atlanta was actually rated one of the worst sports city's in America. The Braves are always a consistent team, a team who's guaranteed a playoff spot. But they haven't sold out a regular season game in years, hell they dont sell out playoff games. Don't get me started about the Atlanta Thrashers easily one of the least popular teams in the NHL. College football is college football, no one pulls in more fans than Michigan at the Big House 100,000+ in one game. Wings win the Cup, Pistons are consistently on top of the East, the Lions still manage to sell out the season before the first game starts, the Tigers pull in 30-40,000 every game despite there below .500 record,Michigan/ Michigan state football, Michigan hockey top 3 in U.S. And...... Atlanta is on the list, the guy who wrote this must have been on something good.

Do the Recent Signings get Butts in the Seats this Year?
Coolio Mendez replied to Firehawk's topic in General
Nope, Crosby wouldn't fill the seats in Detroit. Unless companies move back to Michigan, and gas drops 2 dollars. I'm trying my best to go to home opener but my work schedule might say otherwise. -
If you cant beat em join em!

Owen Nolan is a slight upgrade from Dallas Drake. Bring in Nolan!

Very disappointed in resigning Lilja, I want to see Erickson, or Meech dammit!

I'm disappointed with Leno, all that hype for a 30 second song? I wanted a damn interview so the people can see Osgoods and Lidstroms great personailty. I'm sure Ozzie had a few jokes up his sleeves. Why not give them a better script to work with, instead of making a fool out themselves. Damn Leno, and Damn Timberlake for punishing us with that song I wished to never hear again.

Higher All Time Ranking: Yzerman or Lidstrom?
Coolio Mendez replied to GMRwings1983's topic in General
Yzerman ranks for me as the greatest warrior the NHL has ever seen. Stevie was one of the best team leaders ever in the NHL, right there with Messier for me. He was always a good scorer and passer and was very very rarely ever irresponsible on the ice. Lidstrom will go down in my book as the greatest defensman I have ever seen play the game. I never had the privilage of seeing Bobby Orr play, but I know he was truly an excellent player. The NHL has adapted into a much more physicaal game than it used to be back in the 60s and 70s, and for it to be absolutely dominated by a player who is not your goonish physical defensman is truly an accomplishment. Nick has never taken a stupid penalty, is the perennial favorite for the Norris, and he is the best 2-way defenseman in the league. But what Steve Yzerman did was come into a hockey team that was struggling, into a city that wasn't doing so great, and shamelessly work to bring that team to greatness. He brought a city to their feet. He was a key instrument in the creation of "Hockeytown." He brought awareness to hockey. Yzerman may have been injury prone at the end of his career, but no one fought back from injuries like Stevie. At the end of Lidstroms career, I think he will go down as one of the greatest players the game has seen along with Yzerman, but in my book he will still be ever so slightly behind Stevie. -
