If the Wings trade Nick Lidstrom, I could see a sizeable chunk of our fan base disappearing. Very quickly.

Watch what you eat at Detroit Area Pro Sporting Events
Electrophile replied to CenterIce's topic in General
I can't remember the last time I ate food at a sporting event. Normally if I go anywhere or my family and I go to a game (baseball/hockey), we eat beforehand. There's a great restaurant near the Durham Bulls ballpark in Durham that we eat at before games. Relatively inexpensive and about a stone's throw from the gates. I'll have a Diet Coke or a bag of peanuts or something, but nothing that's not already sealed. -
No. I'm a Red Wings fan. I wish Steve well, but that's it.

I watch the Red Wings because I'm a Red Wings fan. If I wasn't, I wouldn't watch/listen to their games, post on their message board, follow the players, read news about them, etc. I don't give a rat's ass about Sidney Crosby, the Pittsburgh Penguins or frankly, any other team in the league unless we're playing them. Then I care as they're our opponent. If they're not, I'm not bothered. The only reason I watched the SCF this year was because of my dad. Had the Hawks not been in them, I wouldn't have watched. The Wings are the only team I care about.

I'll be reading a book. I don't like the Penguins and I don't like football, so rather than surf around endlessly trying to find something to watch, I'll just finish one of a few books I've been meaning to. Win-win proposition the way I see it.

I thought her wedding dress looked exquisite. Very classy and elegant. I also loved the fascinator/veil combo she had, rather than a traditional long veil attached to the back of her hair. I thought it was very sleek and modern. I also liked that Hank channeled Johnny Cash -- an all-black formal get-up can look good, if tailored appropriately.

Awesome! I love Darren and the few times I was able to watch games and he was doing color or some kind of commentary, I thought he was hilarious. So I hope he can bring his sense of humor to whatever shows he'll be doing -- I'm sure they'll be a hit.

No high horse, more like a family full of alcoholics.

The line starts behind me, mister.

I guess some of us are inspired enough to find better, more productive things to do than get drunk.

He still hasn't made up his mind? We're not getting any younger, Mike.

Baseball, my family and friends, some good books, music, decent weather......lots of things. Off-seasons aren't really a pain for me, because they're going to happen whether we win or we lose. I actually enjoy the break, it lets me catch up on some things that I tend to neglect during the season.

We'll all be cold and in our graves by the time Mikey makes up his mind.

Gary Bettman makes Bud Selig look like Mahatma Gandhi.

So my guess that this was like a Brett Favre situation wasn't far off, then. s*** or get off the pot, Mike.
-
Well, if you want to continue looking silly, who am I to stop you.
-
Not at all. You're inferring what I did not imply. There's more than a few really smart, level-headed Wings fans here I enjoy talking to who are from Detroit and still live there or aren't from Detroit and live there now. It would behoove you to not try and pull something out of thin air to start some kind of argument because it's really quite silly. And you should feel silly.
-
That makes it sound like we have a Brett Favre situation here.
-
There are a lot of people here who don't want to be reminded of that. As to your second point, I don't know as many Wings fans IRL as I do here on the forums, but for me it's about 50-50. What's interesting to me is that the majority of the logical/smart Wings fans that I know, either on this board or IRL, either aren't from Detroit or don't live there anymore.
-
I concur. I admit I'm a homer and wear Wing-colored glasses, but I just don't see how trading a valuable piece of the future of the team is a smart move. It would be comparable to the Blackhawks trading Toews away or something.

This is fantastic. Education is nothing to be ashamed of and I think it's great that he wants to get a college degree. Even if he never uses it, the pride that comes with having worked hard and earned one is reward enough. Good on you, Pavs.

is so frickin' tired of this tiresome heat. *sigh*

He's dead?! Holy s***. Totally did not see that coming. My condolences to his friends and family -- I can't begin to imagine what they must be thinking/feeling right now.

How does the phrase "not on your life" sound? Loyalty is why great players take pay cuts to stay here their entire careers rather than make more money on some other team. Nick, Hank, Pavs....they could all make more money somewhere else than they're making here. However they want to be Red Wings. So they take less than they're probably worth. Illitch does right by them, they do right by him. It would be far too easy to piss that good karma away, and we should be grateful they don't. There's a reason players say they want to come here, want to sign long-term deals. Drapes and Malts may be older and not possessing the same skills they used to, but rather than kicking them in the balls, the team is going to let them go on their terms. They've earned that much. Hockey may be a business, but if you piss people off and give them the impression that you won't do squat for them, they won't come here and you won't make money. You have to grease wheels to get them to move.

Do we need Mike Modano? Meaning, will the team be worse off next season if we don't sign him? He's 38 years old. Shouldn't the team focus on getting younger rather than signing older players? We have enough of them on the team already.
