#6 New Jersey Devils vs. #3 Florida Panthers

Congrats to the Devils for pulling it out, but they're toast in the next round. You can't blow leads like that and expect to be in the playoffs long. I think the only reason the Devils are still in it is because they lucked out and played the Panthers first. Anyone else in the East would have beaten them in this round.

Report: Luongo officially requests trade out of Vancouver

This situation feels kind of similar to the one back in '95 when Patrick Roy wanted out of Montreal. His play was going downhill, the fans were on his back all the time, it was suggested that Roy was past his prime and he was only going to get worse as time went on. Then Roy got traded to another contender and he was a monster again. Obviously the situation is a little different with the big contract and salary cap, but I would see Luongo going somewhere else and being a beast again.

Report: Luongo officially requests trade out of Vancouver

I doubt Columbus is on his list of teams. Tampa is a good possibility.

#7 Washington Capitals vs. #2 Boston Bruins

I saw this over on HFBoards and I had tears in my eyes from laughing so hard

    Thanks, Matt!

Best hockey site out there and not just because its a Wings board either. It's a great hockey forum that welcomes fans of other teams which generates lots of good hockey talk! I also come here for my hockey news because usually somebody posts something here before it shows up anywhere else. Keep up the great work!

#7 Washington Capitals vs. #2 Boston Bruins

Probably one of the biggest playoff wins in their franchise's history. Congrats to the Caps aka the only team I care about left in the playoffs. Holtby is awesome! I like how Peverley looks at him like "What the hell is wrong with you? You didn't even blink!" lol

Detroit has inside track on Parise

I am afraid that he won't do anything again, but that's only because that's what we're used to now. I can't see how he wouldn't make any big moves this summer via trades or free agency. That would be like a fireman going to a burning building and saying "I'll just wait and see if it rains first or maybe this glass of water will do the trick". Not saying that the Wings are on fire, but its his job to keep the team, that's not in the rebuilding process, competitive. His inaction as GM is starting to show. The team has been finishing earlier each year, getting older each year and we have more cap space now than ever. Unless he's trying to get fired, he'll make some moves this summer.

    What's Kenny Holland's Offseason Plan?

Florida has a good core? Minnesota? If I'm a highly touted free agent, with all this parity in the league now, I'm looking to join a franchise that has a long history of success and has shown they know what they're doing and can be competitive every year. We're losing some guys like Lidstrom, but we still have some good years out of Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Howard and Franzen. That's a lot more than these other teams can offer. A lot of people said what you just said in 2003, heck I think Fedorov might have been one of them, and Detroit turned it around real quick and became a championship caliber team again. That's the kind of franchise I would want to play for. Not one that makes the playoffs once every three years or collects lottery picks.

2011-2012 GM of the Year nominees

Absolutely. It took a lot of stones to make the Richards and Carter trades, then signing Bryz to a big contract and stealing Jagr and Talbot from the Pens. He really should at least be nominated for this.

#8 Los Angeles Kings vs. #2 St. Louis Blues

This should be a tight checking, low scoring, multiple OT series... the Kings should take it though. Better goaltending, more scoring. Kings in 6 games.

#4 Nashville Predators vs. #3 Phoenix Coyotes

Well here's a match up most of the hockey world won't care about. Preds in 5.

    Do we really need Suter?

Whoa! $8 or $9 mil? That would be insane. His goal totals have been dropping each season and he finished with 31 goals this year. No way, does a 31 goal scorer make close to what Crosby, Malkin and Ovechkin make. He'll get $7 mil, $7.5 tops.

    What's Kenny Holland's Offseason Plan?

Just remembered that Stuart isn't expected to be back. Man, if we lose Nick and Stuart, we NEED to do something big on the blue line. Not saying Suter is a must, there's always trades, but that would be an awful scenario to have to replace both of them in one offseason.

#5 Philadelphia Flyers vs. #4 Pittsburgh Penguins

In Games 6 and 7, his defensemen blocked shots as if it were an empty net.

    What's Kenny Holland's Offseason Plan?

I don't know if its so much confidence as it is optimism. We have lots of caps space, for a change, and these two players bring something we're lacking right now, so one would have to think that we're at least going to be pursuing them. Personally, I don't think we'll get both, but one would be great. We need a new stud defenseman with Lidstrom getting near the end and Parise would fit so well on this team its ridiculous. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Wings get neither, but they have to do something. I really don't want to hear Holland say in September "Darren Helm coming back from injury was our big off season acquisition".

    What's Kenny Holland's Offseason Plan?

Sounds like they're looking to actually spend some cash this summer. Red Wings will be looking to spend big this summer Making big additions this summer would definitely fit the pattern we've been in: 1997: Stanley Cup Finals 1998: Stanley Cup Finals 1999: Eliminated by the Avs in the second round 2000: Eliminated by the Avs in the second round 2001: Eliminated in the first round 2002: Make a big trade (Hasek), acquire big name free agents (Hull Robitaille), win Stanley Cup 2008: Stanley Cup Finals 2009: Stanley Cup Finals 2010: Eliminated by the Sharks in the second round 2011: Eliminated by the Sharks in the second round 2012: Eliminated in the first round 2013: Trade (Nash, Iginla?), free agent signings (Parise, Suter?), another Cup?

So Who Do You Cheer For Now?

I'm cheering for the Caps and Ovechkin. Personally, I don't think they have a snowball's chance and they have a big test on Wednesday in Boston. Ovie plays hard and deserves to have his hard work pay off eventually.

Who will be Vancouver's 2012-13 goalie?

They'll keep Schneider for sure, but they'll have a tough time getting good value in return for Luongo. He might have to be a salary dump deal where they get practically nothing in return, just so they have that cap space back.

We Need to Get Tougher to Play Against

I was actually thinking this myself. We've seen tons of players that are a pain in the butt to play against in the playoffs, let's focus on these types of players. Moen, Tootoo, Doan, Gaustad, Pahlsson are all perfect examples.

#5 Philadelphia Flyers vs. #4 Pittsburgh Penguins

So since the Cup, they barely got past an Ottawa team that was way over matched, then bounced by an 8th seed in 7 games, bounced in the first round the next year by TB and bounced in the first round again by their cross state rival. People keep talking about OUR team declining. This is supposed to be the next "dynasty" and they can't even get out of the first round in the East.
  21. xtrememachine1

#8 Los Angeles Kings vs. #1 Vancouver Canucks

I'm really not one to "toot my own horn" but its not everyday I pick an 8th seed over a Presidents trophy winner and are right.
  22. xtrememachine1

    Will #5 be back?

I'm thinking he's not coming back. The team has been in decline since we won the Cup in '08 and I don't think he'll want to put his 42 year old body through another season if the team is a 5th seed and/or getting knocked out of the playoffs. Holland needs to generate some interest and motivate him to play another year. Does that mean trade for Alfredsson? Sign a big name defenseman so he plays on the second pairing? Make a huge trade like we did in 01 with Hasek? I don't know. Holland has his work cut out for him this off season.

WCQF Game 5 GDT : Red Wings 1 at Predators 2

Let's NOT have Lidstrom go out the same way Yzerman did, in the first round. Let's bring this thing back to Detroit!

Luongo gone from Vancouver this summer ...

Unless Luongo starts cranking out Vezina trophies or Stanley Cups, he's going to be in Vancouver for life. Nobody is going to trade for an underachieving goalie making $5.3 mil for the next 10 years. Not to mention, he's 33 right now, would anyone want a 43 year old goalie? He's not spectacular now, imagine 10 years from now. Right now, I don't see him being any better than Howard and Howie's $3 mil less. I like the current Wings formula of going cheap on the goalie and spending money elsewhere.
  25. xtrememachine1

these teams are exceeding beyond expectations ...

I understand what you're trying to say, but we had a season like that. It was 2006. The top 4 teams in the West got bounced in the first round and the Finals ended up being Carolina and Edmonton. As a hockey fan, I watched, of course, but to the casual hockey fan outside those markets, who cares? No stars. No history. No controversy. Nothing. Florida vs Phoenix would be a disaster. Hockey fans in those cities barely care about the team, why should anyone else? Maybe having their teams make it that far sparks their fan base. Then again, maybe not. Anaheim, Carolina, and NJ are near the bottom of the league in attendance this past year and all won the Stanley Cup in the past 10 years.
