2012 NHL Trade Deadline Thread - February 27th, 3:00 PM ET

Uhhh yeah and we're still the 2nd best team in the league with all those deficiencies. The Wings are in fine shape, we don't need to go blowing prospects on 3rd or 4th line grinders that will make a minimal impact at best.

    Somethings brewin'?

I want a forward that would make it really difficult for us to lose a best of 7 series. At the beginning of the year, I was thinking Alfredsson or Doan, but both of their teams are still in the playoff hunt, so I don't see them being moved. But seriously, Doan was such a huge pain in the butt, in these last two playoffs and was making the Coyotes a tough opponent all by himself. I think a player with that type of drive and production at that time of year would go a long way on the Wings.

2012 NHL Trade Deadline Thread - February 27th, 3:00 PM ET

According to CapGeek, Weber is an RFA this summer, so unless we're giving up a ton of draft picks, I don't see how we're getting him next year.

    Bertuzzi Contract Extension

I HATED Bert when we first got him, but he's really grown on me. He's very solid, makes a lot of big plays, works hard, is pretty darn good in the shootout. He deserves a new deal and a raise. Glad to have him around for another couple years.

Kyle Quincey traded to Detroit in 3 team trade (TBL & COL)

I like this trade and don't like it at the same time. When Quincey was here as a rookie, he was thrown into the playoff fire and actually did well. He didn't rack up points, but he did a lot of little things right. He was solid and you didn't notice him (unless you were looking for him) when he was out there, which is good for a defenseman. I always felt, even then, that letting him go was a mistake. Maybe I'm way off base here, but I expect him to be like another Ian White. Good skater, good puck mover, good shot from the point, solid defensively. What I don't like is that we gave up a 1st round pick to get him. I'm okay with trading 1st round picks, but I was hoping to package up our 1st round pick to get someone a little more established or a bigger impact player. Quincey is good, but he'll be a 5th or 6th defenseman this year. Maybe this can be our new thing, make a trade with Stevie Y and win a Cup. Here's hoping.

    Has Ovechkin Passed His Prime?

He's not passed his prime, but he needs to be on a different team to turn it around. I think his stay in Washington has run its course. They had bad coaching (maybe they still do), Semin is lazy, Green's injured all the time, they haven't really found their goalie. I think Ovie's thinking to himself, "Why kill myself when we lose in the playoffs anyways?" I mean, that's a lousy attitude to have, but seriously the guy has been great for years, played great in the playoffs and the team still can't make it beyond the 2nd round for a variety of reasons. I'm not saying that kind of attitude is right considering how much they're paying him, but you can't blame him for feeling that way. He needs to be on a different team, a team he believes that he can win on, but with the way he's playing and how much money he's making and how long his contract is, I don't see him being able to be moved.

    freeredwings.tv stops streaming NHL games

Damn! I knew it was too good to be true. Ah well... thank you very much for streaming the games. Red Wings nation appreciated it. Good luck with the little one!

Who Could be Dealt at the Deadline?

I like Quincy when he was in Detroit. Considering the circumstances when he came in during the 2007 playoffs, I thought he did really well. I would not be opposed to getting him back. I always felt like it was a mistake that we let him go. I forgot about Statsny. He would definitely do better elsewhere. He has the talent, but at $6.6 mil... its a big risk, considering he hasn't been very good the last two years. I can't stand watching a game with Oduya in it. All I hear is "Ohh do ya?". If he played for the Wings, it'd drive me nuts.

Blackhawks' Losing Streak: Nine Games and Counting

It should also be pointed out that the 2008 Wings team that went on a big losing streak also had a ton of injuries. The Hawks are relatively healthy right now. There's no excuse. Their big performers are not living up to the hype/contract they signed.

Is Nicklas Lidstrom The Greatest Detroit Red Wing Of All Time?

Really tough question. Lidstrom definitely has the resume to be considered the best. 7 Norris trophies, 6 SCF appearances, 4 Stanley Cups, 1 Conn Smythe, 1 Gold medal. And Howe... well he was without question the greatest of all time before Gretzky showed up. I always tend to lean towards Yzerman though. Yeah, he doesn't have the awards and championships like the others, but he played at a really tough time. Mario Lemieux and Wayne Gretzky, both considered to be two of the greatest hockey players of all time, were both in their prime at the same time Yzerman was in his. How many Art Ross and Hart trophies did Yzerman miss out on because he played during the same era as those two? How many Norris Trophies would Lidstrom have if he played during the same time as Bobby Orr? How many scoring championships would Howe have if he played during the same time as Mario and Wayne? Yzerman also played on some really bad teams during his career. The same can't be said for Lidstrom and Howe who played most of their careers on really good championship caliber teams.

The only teams that can win the cup

I feel that teams like the Preds, Blues, Kings will be tough and might make some noise knocking off some of the bigger teams, but I don't see them making it to the Finals, let alone win the Cup.

The only teams that can win the cup

Detroit, SJ, Vancouver and maybe Chicago are the best bets for the West. I really like our chances out of those 4 teams. In the East, Pittsburgh is, unfortunately, the team to beat in the East. If/When Crosby returns, they'll have two solid scoring lines and the weak Eastern Conference. I feel like the Rags are a one and done team. I don't have much hope for Washington this year and Boston hasn't been very solid on defense lately. Of course, that could just be a slump they're in, but I'd like to see them get back to be good on defense again before saying they're a team that can win it again. NJ is a team to watch in the East, I think. They were hot at the end of last year and were on a good streak recently to start this second half. Streaky teams are usually teams that make it to the Finals in the East.

    What to do about goaltending

This is what I was worried about last summer. If Howard gets injured, we're in serious trouble. I think a move needs to be made to acquire a competent backup goalie, not just for now but just in case, God forbid, something else would happen to him later on. Our season shouldn't hinge on Jimmy's health.

    Ovechkin hits Michalek

There was garbage all throughout that game. Flying elbows, charging, nasty cross checks WELL after the whistle, blatant tripping... so in other words it was a typical Pens game.

    WC-Central Race

I actually fear the Blues more than the Hawks right now. The Hawks are a bunch of loudmouths that have little depth and shaky goaltending. The Blues, however, work hard, can get scoring from pretty much anywhere and have two solid options in net. Too many times have I seen the Wings get bounced from the playoffs by a team built like the Blues.

SI: Sidney Crosby to visit spine specialist in Calif.

One thing that I find really interesting in all this is that the Neurology wing of UPMC (in Pittsburgh) is rated one of the best in the country. So why is he going all the way to California? Unless he already went there, got news that he didn't want to hear and wants a second opinion.

    10 Year Anniversary

The only year I didn't HOPE they would win the Stanley Cup, because I KNEW they would. Good times, great team. It was like watching the Harlem Globetrotters of hockey.

    1/10 GDT : Red Wings 1 at Islanders 5

I like Babs, but whenever I see a good team lose to a bad one like this, it falls on the shoulders of the coach.

If you could pick any six players, from any era...

Yzerman, Lemieux, Gretzky Lidstrom and Larry Robinson Patrick Roy Yeah, two Wings. I know. I'm biased.

    Marchand Suspended 5 games

Eh, I've watched this a million times. The first time I saw it, I was surprised it was a penalty. It looks like Salo tries to hit him, he ducks and Salo goes flying over him. When you slow it down it looks like maybe Marchand is trying to lay down a hip check on Salo. I don't know. 5 games is too steep for a play, that I thought, looked fine at regular speed.

We need to tie this before intermission. No regrouping for the Leafs.

It'd be nice to see Nyquist be rewarded for how hard he works with a goal.

My thoughts too. If this keeps up for the rest of the game, I have a hard time seeing us lose this one.
