I would really like to see us clear up some cap room next season. As good as our system is, it seems like the Wings would still be "ok" if they were to lose even all three of Hossa, Franzen and Hudler (though I would never wish for that.. and that won't happen). You bring up Leino, Helm, Abdelkader and they're skilled enough to fill our roster for above average third and fourth lines. You can expect a player like Filpulla to increase statistically if he is given more playing time on a better line, and we don't know how many Kyle Quinceys we have until we lose them or give them a prominent role on the team. If we don't resign one or two of our Big Three FA's this year, we have a lot more space to breathe under the cap, which will allow us to move players to and from GR whenever we want, and we even have room to spend more money on a goalie if that's what we want.. Let's say we're only able to keep Hossa, or even just Hudler. The Wings are going to be fine, and their record would not even suffer from the mild complacency that seems to have settled in this year. While it looks like we'd be best off if we could keep all three players this offseason, it might be better for management to liquidate our assets to avoid the same type of problems that our federal government has created for us with the bailouts.

If anything, I say we judge the team at the end of the year, but based on the above listed observations, I say we need to wait until the end of the year to sign anyone else to a contract.

How do you figure one has more long term value than the other? Franzen was born 12/23/79 and Hossa was born 1/12/79. They're only 11 months apart in age, so I don't see that could be a reason why Franzen would be more valuable down the road than Hossa.. please explain?

well i don't know how it would be someone's favorite part... but there's no other professional sport i can think of where you can see people fighting on ice... oh hey that's a good idea for a new extreme sport...

I mean he makes a very valid point; all you have to do is look across town to the Palace to see that the Pistons have been dealing with the same problem since they won the championship in 2004. They've had more than enough talent to win another championship since then, but while in '04 they were a group of hungry players looking to prove themselves, they've been stale and disappointing since. Complacency for the Wings seems imminent, though you hope our mix of veterans can overcome that. I mean, the '99 Wings should have won the Cup too, but it seems a very similar effect may have occurred then too.

I would love having a defensive pairing of Lidstrom and Pronger about as much as I would like having Claude Lemieux play on a line with Darren McCarty. Would it be awesome? In a very twisted sort of way, and the world would explode.
