you need to give me the name and address of whoever said "upgrade over Pahlsson" so I can go to his house and punch him in the face. what you got there is Hossa for a $6.4M cap hit. Also for some reason you can now only have 2 guys on your 4th line...

Well Gaborik isn't the worst example of overpayment, but I think his tendency to not play a lot of games reduces his value. I was thinking more in general of all the signings we've seen today. Apart from a select few, I feel like there's been a lot of money handed out to players that don't really deserve it. And everyone was saying at the Trade Deadline that Calgary was going to win the cup, or atleast compete with Detroit (and San Jose lol) for it. Just because you make a lot of moves and sign some big names doesn't guarantee you success. The Hawks are looking the most impressive, but Huet is a big questionmark that could bring them down. The Rangers look better than before, the Habs are hard to say, Vancoucer looks worse right now but I'm sure they're not done (they're rumored to be after Havlat). Things like chemistry come into play when the season finally starts. On paper a team might look improved, but until you see the final product out on the ice you can't know for sure.

That's a good signing, to get him to agree to a 1-year deal. As others have said, Hawks could be really, really scary next season. The question is if their goaltending is solid enough to make them a contender, and of course beyond next year they really need to crunch the numbers in order to keep their team together.
-
If he can stay healthy it should be a big improvement to their offense. That's a big IF though. Also, what's with everyone being overpayed? I thought with the cap on the way down we'd see a lot smaller contracts, but istead we're seeing 4th line goons getting 1.5-2.0 mil and everyone who has ever scored a goal gets over 5 mil.

Sjostrom signed with the Flames. If there was one guy I really hoped the Wings could get, it was him. Damn it.
-
To be realistic I could see our 50 win streak end next season. Not because this lineup isn't capable of 50 wins, but because any injuries we get will probably hurt us more than usual since we've already brought up our best prospects. And Howard could potentially be a liability in net. Once the playoffs roll around I expect the Wings to be as dangerous as ever though.
-
Me too. Thought for sure he was leaving. Wouldn't want him for $2M though, no chance. Half of that maybe.

Wikipedia has all sorts of stuff like that during times like these.

They were clearly not ready for the playoffs last year and didn't really start playing until Game 4. During the regular season they were a ***** to play against. Good defensively, great goaltending, RICK NASH a.k.a "always scores a hat-trick against the Wings". This is a good pick-up for them. A veteran guy who has been through the playoffs before and knows how to win. Overpayment? Yes a little bit. But he can shut down the other team's star-players, and we all know how valuable that is.
-
Thank you. We'll still be one of the top contenders in the league next year, and beyond that things look even brighter when we get some cap space cleared.
-
Figures. He fits in with Hitchcock's gameplan. They'll be even more difficult to play against next year.
-
Rangers.
-
They could have a really good 1st line with Gomez and Cammalleri. 6 mil is a bit much, but not as bad as Gainey's earlier signings.
-
You're hilarious. Silly as hell, but hilarious.

Lots of teams would love to have a "rebuilding year" with the kind of roster the Wings are going to have. Draper and Maltby are the only ones I really wish we could get rid off, but otherwise we're in great shape. No need to make moves just for the sake of making them.
-
you want to sign one of the most injury prone players in the league 10 years? And even signing him that long I can't imagine we'd get him for a cap hit of less than 5 mil, which would mean we'd have to shed some salary. You are silly. "Our demise"? Having pretty much the exact same team that won the cup just a little over a year ago is our demise?

If you want "fun" on days like this, become a fan of the Canadiens. If you want FUN in the playoffs, stay a fan of the Wings.
-
I actually think the Hawks are doing the right thing going with Huet instead of Khabi.
-
fixed.

Using Pahlsson on the Wing is a criminal offense I believe. He's great at faceoffs and one of the best defensive forwards in the league.
-
I would LOVE Pahlsson on this team. But I don't know if we need another centerman. Neil is not worth it for the money he wants.
-
The Hawks won't lose Kane or Toews. No way. They aren't in as bad of a situation as some think. At the same time I don't think they're that much better with Hossa instead of Havlat. Slightly better yes, but not a whole lot imo.
-
Basically Hossa's cap hit the next 2 years is 6.4 Mil.

Way, way, way too expensive. Next.
