When is the bashing of players going to end?
Holmstrom96Screens replied to Red Crazy's topic in General
I think along about the twelfth of never, because its hockey and hockey fans will bash each other's teams and players, and even their own players on their own fave teams at times when they think their own teams and players need a swift kick in the (hockey) pants. -
bout friggin' time. He is what my friend would call a sac - a - ******.

Shocking: Bad blood between Leafs & Habs
Holmstrom96Screens replied to MacK_Attack's topic in General
i watched the game and had a few choice curse words for not only Kostopolous (sp)? but the whole habs team in general, they played crap. I felt sorry for Price tbh with the team he had in front of him sat night. and yea price did wack with his stick but the leafs kept running into him all night. all those interference calls. price had to do something I suppose. -
I don't wish injury on any player but I don't like Duchess Crosby.

the article itself isnt old but some of the material in it Larry Wigge took from another article he wrote about Holmström some years ago. For example "Oh yeah. Every game. I think about planting a two-hander across the mouth of someone on the other team" That quote was in one of his articles he wrote back around 2006 something like that. (I think that was the year he wrote it. don't quote me on that cause the article i printed it off the date wasnt on it.) It was called Cry Havoc and Let Slip Tomas Holmström. Some of the rest of it , like the quote from Lidström "he's not like your typical swedish player...not fast and skillful like Z or big hands like Samuelsson...." Edit: Sorry i made a mistake. The Lidström quote is from the same "cry havoc " article.

one of my friends on the official wings forums gave me that article. Its just the nicest article. I broke into a smile reading it. my friend gave it to me cause he knows I'm like the biggest Holmström fan

I don't agree with said person who made that suggestion that lebda is worst in the nhl. Sure he is going through a rough time right now, but lotd of players have bad streaks. He is going through a bad spurt out there though thats why I traded him off my fantasy team and got Milan Lucic. That trade currently has me in first place, beating everyone.
-
Lucic just sent Van Ryn through the glass!
Holmstrom96Screens replied to ShanahanMan's topic in General
I saw that i was watching the game lol Lucic was grinning like a cheshire cat for a few secs afterwards I think he liked his hit plus I think he was happy no one got seriously hurt. -
"Vincent Lecavelier has done what...won a cup with a team not NEARLY as stacked as Detroit was last year" one difference between the Lightning win and the detroit win is that Detroit won the cup in 2008 and thatis not in doubt; while the Tampa Bay win was surrounded with a bit of contraversy. Not nearly as stacked - and contraversy to boot.

Crosby once said about the dreaded 5 on 3 in the scf something to the effect of 'big deal - lots of players can do that whats so spectacular about that?' and yes, Doc Holiday I saw the water bottle incident. And honestly I was thinking, Come on, Sid Oh for christs sake, just cause you got hit? Certainly dats and zett have never put up the points crosby did but they are different types of players. Cosby can hardly play defence if his life depended on it; Zett and Dats are defensive forwards and sometimes while your doing that sometimes a drop in pts can be inevitable. (read Ryder's story of how he was once the habs top scorer for two seasons and then Carbs wanted him to play more defense so he did and his points dropped but he improved his +/-.) Hey, it happens. Zett and Dats are better all around than Crosby. Thats one reason I would say no to taking crosby over them. The other reason is the leadership ability. and i believe Crosby can't beat them at that. Zett and Dats are guys who can take a few hits without throwing water bottles around. Crosby has a lot more to learn yet before he can really be a good captain for the Pens.

True.

You're welcome, Egroen. I read the whole thread, and well no one brought it, up and i also feel, like you, that that part of Sergei Fedorov's life is important and it needed to be said. and well....while I do not believe that time can necessarily heal all wounds, it can diminish them. I do agree that Sergei was excerizing the same rights Teddy was, I can accept that. But like I wrote, I feel it was done on a much smaller scale and unlike Teddy's, wasn't really fighting for the betterment of all league players in that way. That part of your post I disagree with.
-
I'd like to add my two cents on this one, having been a huge fedorov fan in the 90's like many people and a huge fan of ted Lindsay (he's the reason I got interested in the red wings in 1995 in the first place I saw the movie Net Worth about Lindsay's story in 1995 and 1995 is when i became a fan of the red wings) and since then I have read a lot about Teddy and his fight, and Fedorov and his fights. While I agree that there is a little similarity between Sergey and Teddy in their contract disputes over money, I think that is as far as the similarity goes. Teddy was basically fighting for a fairere system for all players so they and later generations of players could live much better lives for themselves and their families ; Sergey on the other hand did not. His contract disputes and why he left was not really about that. It was, as other people pointed out, about him. I do not fault Sergey for this as lots of players want better contracts and more money. I'm simply saying that that is where the similarity between him and Teddy ends. Sheeesh, I remember reading in the newspaper in the latter part of the 90's as a teenager some years after Gordie Howe and some other retired NHL players sued the NHL after what the NHL had done to players from their time. In this article I read (the supreme court of Canada ruled that the NHL owned the retired players a minimum of $36 million dollars) this retired player , when he received his compensation, he went out and bought himself a nice big fat steak for his supper. The very next day, he died. How sad is that. I do not believe that Sergey's and Teddy's fights over money can be comparable. I even think that to do so actually is a bit of a slap in the face to Teddy and everything he fought for, to be honest and would dimish his heroism. Having said all this, though, Sergey can be credited with serving a similar, but dfferent role in fighting for something. Recall that Sergey was Russian, and in the early 1980's and even long before that Russian players were practically owned by the so called Communist USSR. Sergey defected during a Goodwill Games being played here in 1989 at the time to go sign with the Red Wings. He - and several other Russians who also left - Pavel Bure, Alexander Mogilny, Vyacheslav Fetisov, Igor Larionov, respectively - left to play over here but it also sent a message that they were opposed to the kind of system the USSR had set up over there - hockey wise and politically. It was a hockey statement, but also a political one as well. The actions of Sergey - and some of the people who would later become his teammates - as well as those like Bure and Mogilny - would inspire Larionov and Fetisov to go back to Russia. To fight for official permission for they and the later generations of Russians such as Datsyuk, Malkin, Ovechkin, Samsonov to name a few, to legally come here and play. Sergey and the rest were the first generations of Russians to open the door for the younger ones. In this way Sergey can be credited. His playing abilities, we all know he was also a great player. So while Sergey did not fight in exactly the same way as Teddy did, he did make a contribution to the sport of hockey that can be commended. That said, I agree with some of the other posters in this thread who said that Sergey's # 91 should not be retired now, but maybe later, as time changes. I also noticed that some one also criticized the Montreal Canadiens for being too relaxing with number retirements. I take issue with that. The Canadiens have a long history, a century's worth. They have been able tobuilt up more stars and more star lines, therefore obviously they can retire a lot more numbers than the red wings. In fact the Canadiens were one of the teams who help built the NHL in december 1917, and when the new league had its very first real superstar, it was Canadien Joe Malone (if you dont know who that is I suggest you look him up; he was awesome in his time). By comparison detroit only had its first team in 1926, not only that they did not become what we know as the red wings until 1932. By that time the habs already had a history, dynasty, and a string of stanley cups behind them. The red wings first real dynasty had hardly begun in the 30's. I suggest you do some more research before you open your keyboard (and before anyone asks yes I'm a habs fan; they are my second fave team). That is all. well that, and a key number of members from this new red wings dynasty starting from the later part of the 90's should be retired; among them all those who were there for all four of sc championships and yes I absolutely vote for my fave player, # 96.

yea I saw that on tv saturday when i got home that night and turned on the tail end of the habs/leafs game....Pretty funny tbh. I laughed.
-
I think if you're gonna bust on cleary than the game vs the leafs on oct 9th is most likely not the best thing to bring up cause fact is nearly everybody played kind of crap that night. (I still have no idea what they were on that night; if i figure it out I'll let ya know), now yes I busted on Cleary on drw.com but only for that one game and the fact our newspaper made a big fuss over cleary for that game when he really didnt deserve it that night but i don't bust his entire hockey ability based on that game and Lilja I don't hate the man but iwouldnt mind if he got traded. fact is he did do some re\ather dumb stuff as was already pointed out, and if people may recall did some rather dumb stuff in the scf of 2008 as well. but cleary played better in the game vs ottawa , they all did really, and cleary got an assist too. imo cleary > lilja (and no even though I'm from Newfoundland this is not just me being a Newfoundland homer, I really believe that Cleary is better hockey player than Lilja.)
-
I can think of lots who don't love him tbh. For some people, he's disliked. last night was a good example - apparently according to my friends who listened or watched the game - it wasnt on here where i live - another bulls**t interference call.
-
One my friends said she'd have a look for that for me. She told me that's what Tomas called his house in that 'in my own words' that his house was like 'the freak show' If she finds it I'll post it, but maybe one of these people here on lgw might find it and help both of us cause I'd like to see it as well
-
yea the goals that are not pretty still count....that reminds me ...LOL at pittsburgh if they had learned that earlier instead of always trying to make the pretty goal all the time they might have done better in the playoffs....i mean the scf, it worked for them until they reached the scf. I saw them trying it again....to make the pretty goal instead of just shooting the darn puck and, um.....yea. we know where it got them
-
Yer, franzen's a beast, I know and cleary's an up and coming screener too, I saw him in game 5 of the scf when Tomas was out with a hamstring injury. Utter speculation but I think Tomas might have taught him a thing or two. Of course cleary and franzen cant screen like Tomas but they can take his place. I just want to see Tomas get better and come back healthy cause he's my fav player and I love him. and he's the best at what he does imo. He's quite dangerous when he wants to be.
-
Awwww. Get better, Tomas ! We need you in front of the opposing goalies' nets!

anyone else find Carbs slightly annoying? The man just irked me. standing behind the bench in his spiffy suit, crackin the gum and looking, well, arrogant. I mean I like Montreal as a second fave team (and I'm a fan of Carey Price) but Carbonneau just got on my nerves tonight. He just looked so darn arrogant. I liked carbs as a player but as a coach? Meh. That and Holmström did well. detroit almost got a few in because of Tomas causing havoc aroundthe net. and its true.....euro twins plus some other detroit players > any montreal roster since, yea, 1994. and the whole team after that since Roy left in december 1995. I like the habs but thats true what someone said about them.
-
The reason why detroit didnt win tonight? Two words : Carey Price. and the fact detroit was missing like half their roster and then Cheli took a shot in the foot and he too left. And, Howard was in goal (not as good as Ozzie) Detroit shoulda scored more goals than they did tbh.
-
ditto. I watched the man play in the 2008 playoffs. although he played only a short time, he did great in the time he played and I quickly noticed him. I bought his rookie card the other day. That said, Zetty was mentioned europeans/Russians tend to have a different approach to the hockey and they usually don't come to nhl until they approach their mid twenties (on average) and some, such as Sergei Nemchinov, didn't come until they were in their late twenties. While North Americans tend to break into nhl at an earlier age. not saying I don't agree with this approach, because I do. I tend to agree with the europeans/russians approach rather than the north american way. what I'm saying is that the wings management maybe adopting that approach to hockey and that may be why they're sending Helm back down. Is Helm ready to play in the NHL? I think so. He is 21 years old and appeared quite mature to me, and he handled playoff pressure very well.

Why do people call the Canadiens the Habs?
Holmstrom96Screens replied to rdwngnut's topic in General
New France....and Canada's first french settlement...was founded in 1608, by an explorer named Samuel de Champlain. I'm a history major at university....so I know this. I think 'les habitants' is a good nick for the Montreal Canadiens - my second fave team - since they're like the oldest nhl hockey team (that I know of) and whose owners helped form the NHL in December 1917.
