Thank you ! xD I'm glad some people do see my point of view ...... nice to know. 5 and 30 are no brainers. Everyone's pretty much in agreement on number 5 even though we're more divided on 30 ...but im one of the ones who agree with 30 being up there. yes if the DZH line stays together and continues on their streak.....it will almost be like a 21 century production line wouldnt it? Cuz they're pretty much one of the most powerful, if not THE most powerful NHL line right now. btw no one actually needs to try and build a case for Homer. Its already there. You cant argue with facts xD *ok off my soapbox now*

    Former Wings...

Keith Primeau. Got to the sc finals with the wings in 1995 but lost to the devils; traded by the wings in 1996 before he could win the cup with the new wings dynasty who broke the 42 year sdrought.

Please Stop Calling The Wings A Lock

You're right, and it is a part of fan cultures. and so is hockey ribbing and bustin other people's chops about their players and teams (i love poking at flyers fans) I love to say go wings go as much as any wingnut. I only wanted toinject a little reality into it as well though.

A bet I made with my friend...

68 ! wheni do the math, and my math aint very good, the season is 82 games, half of that is 41. 68 is almost 30 more games than the half. not far off of 30. Could the wings realistically do that? Sure they're a good team. but like someone said their record is 62. I dont think they'll win that many - 68 - but thats just me.

no. i can definitely say no to that one. I know you're all right and it'll never happen. I know what it's like there. I know how it works. I never grew up with a father who's been an NHL fan for 50 years and me being one for nearly 20 for to let fave players of mine cloud my judgement. But homer has been very valuable to the new era and in getting the 42 years with no cups ended. dont see any reason why he shouldnt be included with those particular red wings he was with and they all helped...they all should get recognized in my opinion. I'll go with the opinions of some other people who posted here and say yes to a wings hall of fame or something of that nature. after all, if Illitch wont even formally recognize larry aurie (part of the red wings first real power line in the 1930's just after they were renamed the red wings) for crying out loud what chance does homer have.

for the fellow who asked me can I really sit here and type on my keyboard yes.... I can, and I do. Like Doc Holiday and his Ozzie fuming I too fumed up in rage cause even wings fans give Homer less credit than what he actually deserve. Doc Holiday is right about Ozzie btw. Another underrated goalie that he is

Who Wears the "C" after Lidstrom

Zetterberg is the most likely candidate for the C after Liddy. I'll aslso name a few who I also think would be nice candidates. Cleary, Franzen, and I'll pick Rafalski cause he seems like he has leadership skills as well. Pasha Datsyuk should wear an A. (oh wait he does. LOL. But I mean he should continue to wear it even after Liddy's reign is over.) He's a good alternate captain.

Please Stop Calling The Wings A Lock

I'm not jumpin on any high horses at all....havent been riding horseback at any time on this board so far actually. I'm just saying its july of freaking 2008. The next stanley cup win is nearly one freaking year away. Anything can happen between now and then, thats all im saying. I just think its ridiculous to claim the wings have the 2009 stanley cup locked up. There is no way anyone can claim realistically that a stanley cup win that is nearly one year away is locked up definitely finito no questions asked. with that said you dont have to listen to my opinion. go ahead and think what you like. thats the beauty of message boards - everyone is different and has a different opinion. It would be boring if we all thought the same now, wouldnt it?

lol some of those things are straw men, others just plain ridiculous (mustaches? Dogsledding? Wtf) Draper has already been considered both here and other wing forums. I think some people should be considered on the basis of their own specific skill and how it has been a benefit to the whole wings organization. You've got the most valuable role player in the whole NH freakin L. and yet it seems that you guys will name almost anybody ahead of him. I mean come on. Lilja? Kronwall? Gimmie a king size break. I can name many guys who have played the role better than they do. But nobody who has played the screener role better than Homer. and yes I really do know that Homer enhances Dats and Zetty. They wouldnt be as effective without them. The wings organization knew this thats why they built all these power scorers around with Homer. Dats. Zetty. Liddy. Rafalski. Cleary. The PP group. With these and homer crashing slots this group is an NHL powerhouse. I saw how the wings played in game 5 of the stanley cup finals without homer and then how they played in game 6 with homer. In game 5 Fleury was an animal. But even accounting for the goal scored while Cleary was screening, the wings could hardly get a shot past him. Now take game 6. Homer comes back and the DRW strike right away. Rafalski scores and quickly too, do to my Demolition Man crashing the slot. Fleury was not nearly as effective when Homer was playing. and you know it.

Please Stop Calling The Wings A Lock

I said the same thing during game 5 of the SC playoffs. I really thought the wings had that one locked up and they were going to win the cup in that game. Then came the tie up, those overtimes and the pens scored....and I wound up eating crow. Cant really take anything for granted or as garanteed. Far as I think now, it aint over til the fat lady sings.

and to anyone who says that the sharks have gotten worse and they'll choke in playoffs since those trades they've got Ryan Clowe who's one their top players and they've got Yevgeni Nabokov who some experts think should have won the vezina instead of Brodeur in June 12 2008 nhl awards this year. if you picked them to be worse and to get worse i'm sorry, but what? must be a joke.

Please Stop Calling The Wings A Lock

I agree. Calling the wings a lock for 2009 and saying basically the same as well might as well just hand em the cup they're gonna win it anyways saying that kind of stuff just makes you look stupid. anyone who's any kind of a veteran hockey fan and knows anything about the game or else arent totally naive knows that hockey is a funny game and it can turn on a dime. Especially since the playoffs are a whole other different time than the regular season -you can be really good in regular season and some habs fans indeed were saying the habs had 2008 locked up *cough* flyers *cough*

I'd have to settle for a red wings hall of fame cause my guess is the nhl hof will never do it. the bias against Holmstrom and his living in the shadow of other players even though he is the best at what he does its sick. Even the hockey card companies cater to the bias. I buy Holmstrom hockey cards - well Holmsy's my fave NHL player - and there are lots of # 13 and # 40 and # 5 the usual red wings but hardly any of # 96 his cards are harder to find. The dealers told me that Holmstrom isnt recognized as a star or the face of a franchise - well that he will never be. Yzerman is the face of a franchise. and I dont think i need bring up the many times he gets a goal waved off or a penalty well because its Number 96 ! The refs even penalize him based on reputation. To tell the truth I wouldnt be surprised if some dope in the league brings in a "homer's ass rule" or something. well the fact that even these red wings fans are arguing against it is sort of the icing on the cake to me. People from his own organization. even though he is the best at what he does and you guys should be so lucky to have him and recognize him for what he truly is, you would argue against it.

Thank you so much. Y'know whats even sadder is that these are so called wings fans arguing against it - that they dont even recognize the true value of their own special role player - the best in the world possibly - and to say he doesnt deserve to be up there with the other wings mentioned here - its sick thats what it is. another shocker. Some people even mentioned Kronwall and LIlja. The LIlja was probably a joke. but kronwall? wtf? Kronwall over Homer? You've got to be kidding. There have been many guys who do the job Kronwall does way better than Kronwall and yet he is mentioned over Holmstrom - honestly, who has been better at the particular role Holmer has perfected for himself than Holmer? I challenge you. who?

He has never won any awards nor been on an all star team. well I know that. But if there was ever an award for his particular role in the NHL, (something like a norris for liddy's job or a selke for Pasha Datsyuk) Homer would win it hands down. Of that I have no doubt. Scoring goals - his talent does not lie in scoring goals though he certainly does his best to try to score. He is a supporter for the real goal scorers mostly like his linemates Dats and Zett. You think Dats and Zett would put up the numbers they do if they did not have Homer on their line? Their job would be more difficult. Im wondering if Dats would have even joined the ranks of being one out of only 4 red wings in history to lead the team three seasons running in scoring without a guy like homer to help him. I really wish people would stop talking about the goals. Homer is a different kind of forward. not the kind you would build a team around but a really good supporting asset. He is not a goal scoring forward though he tries to score. I really dont think Homer should be judged based on the number of goals he can score. He basically revolutionizing the role of forward playing a different job than most forwards do. I still believe he should be in there with the rest of the red wings you all talk about who helped to bring the team out of its 42 year drought.

I'll be damned.... I just looked it up and read all about Messier, Wayne Maki, and Trevor Linden. of all the stupid bonehead stunts.... I used to watch Linden as a teenager. And well Maki was before my time so I never knew him. what messier did to both linden, the Nucks long serving beloved captain, and Maki who's unofficial number retirement needs no explanation except to those of us like me who had never known him, was despicable imo. I used to believe because of the stories my father told me that Messier was one of the greatest leaders the nhl has seen. but who the hell does that if your a great leader? who? Yzerman wouldnt have stooped so low. You are right to claim Yzerman as a better leader than Messier.

ok, I admit it, you might not take my opinion with much more than a grain of salt because I freely admit to being a Tomas Holmstrom junkie thanks to some wings fans who got me into reading about him and doing research on him. but I do know what I'm talking about and I've been an NHL hockey fan almost 20 years. I'll admit, he's never going to wear a C like Liddy, or an A, he will never be an elder (one of my words for it). Not officially, he wont. Or an A or be a sharpshootting two way player like Dats and Zett and somewhat again like Liddy because Liddy can score as well as playe defence. Or win Norrises and Selkes and Lady Byngs again like said three players. but based on that criteria given there is no way that that would not include Homer. with the exception of being a HOF'er. He isnt a HoF'er - yet. or close to it. I think you've got to be retired what is it, 5 years? to be even a candidate. Who is better at the job he does, his particular job, than Homer? There have been players, Dino Ciccareli is one example of a wing that did the job, and an example of a non wing who did the job would be Smyth, but even experts admit that Homer is the best. He is among the best, if not the best in the world, at that particular job he learned to perfect as a little boy and teenager. He is a long serving Red Wing who served his whole life in the Wings beginning in 1996. Sure people outside of the wings organization dont like him much but thats because of his job and not because of Tomas Holmstrom, the person himself. He isnt, after all, dirty in fact he is quite disciplined. They love him in Detroit, he is one of the best if not the best, most valuable role player in the whole NHL and possibly in the world. He works hard and gives it his all every game. He has 4 stanley Cups and an Olympic gold medal from 2006. How many players can say they have that, especially in today's NHL era. One more Cup and he would have five. Very difficult to even get one cup, much less get 4. He does give positive vibes in his particular organization. like I said, everyone loves him in Detroit. he does have other things about him that are worthy of note. He has been instrumental in changing peopole's views about swedes (they can only produce sundins and zetterbergs) and banishing stereotypes is always a good thing. He is a positive role model to follow because as a boy when he wanted to play hockey the odds were against him because he was the smallest kid and he couldnt skate or stickhandle very well. But he was one of those people who, despite the odds against him succeed because they have decided that they will succeed. And that is an example of good leadership skills. He was intelligent enough to use what he had and develop something he could use in hockey and that organizations would want.

"Wow... that's disgusting. I'll say it right here, right now- I'm never eating Lays again" I'll follow suit....that is disgusting if it really happened. I really have no idea if its true or not. I dont know much of anything about messier - yea he won the cup with the NYR in 1994 but imo his best years were before my time when i was a child and I really wasnt an nhl fan then. ok when i say make a case I mean I could say why Holmstrom deserves to be there.

omg, we dont? Shut up ! actually july 1 is an important day for us newfoundlanders because for us it is also Memorial Day, where we remember the 91% of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment who lost their lives when they went over the top in the battle of the Somme, Beaumont Hamel in WWI on July 1, 1916. Just a little history for ye'all. xD

To tell the truth I'd love to see all the key red wings of the new era who helped to bring the team out of its 42 year long drought up there. the main ones from 1996 to 2008 up there Dunno if its realistic cause dunno how much room is up there but I can dream cant i? Only thing is this. Why in the name of God is Zetterberg and Datsyuk's names being mentioned ahead of # 96? I can definitely make a case but I dont feel like it right now. btw the way nothing against Dats and Zett - fine young men, both. In fact they are my second and third fave red wings. it just annoys me no end though when ppl put the names of those two young men ahead of 96 who is a long time serving red wing longer even than Zett and Dats gave his whole career to the wings and has been an important part of the group that helped end the 42 year drought.

    Norris Trophy 08-09

Oh Liddy can take the puck up the ice and score, no doubt. I know he does that. not saying he doesnt. I cant compare Liddy and orr as I wasnt able to see orr play. Im not old enough to remember him. Im just going by what my father told me with his bobby orr stories. Paul Coffey was another 1 - rushing end to end with the puck - he was great. I do remember him playing he was awesome xD
  24. Holmstrom96Screens

    Norris Trophy 08-09

I couldnt agree more on the bobby orr comment here...Now obviously Im not old enought o remember Bobby Orr. But my father whos a huge hockey fan, used to tell all kinds of stories about Orr back in the day....He was a two way defenceman....could play D but could also bring the puck all the way up the ice ands score by himself. something Liddy cant really do, liddy is more of a defensive defenceman. Not only that....I know Orr was really the very first defenceman really invented the idea of the D man carrying the puck all the way up the ice to score like a forward. Orr based on facts - cant argue with the 8 norrises or his two way style or being really the first one to play such a style - is probably the best D man ever in nhl history. Oh right. Who do I think will win the norris next year? I'll say Lidström. That and not to listen to my friend who said that Markov will win it next year. ^^
