Buccigross on fighting in the NHL

I loved: "I would still watch NHL games if fighting was "banned," and I certainly understand someone could actually get killed in an NHL fight; but I also get that people have died slipping in their own bathrooms, and they still haven't banned showers."

    Ozzie & Conklin

Maybe Ozzie has requested to not play against the Blues. Who knows? It's probably just following the usual rotation... Ozzie played a couple, it's Conklin's turn now. This could just be me, but it makes me feel good knowing that we've got Conklin to back up Ozzie this year... like if something were to happen in the playoffs where Ozzie started to lapse, it's comforting to know that we have a solid back-up to step in that can still make the big saves. Unfortunately, I couldn't say the same if Hasek were still here...

a few polls to pass the time

Exactly what I was going to write. I was looking for something along the lines of "defensive breakdowns" in the last one, and that would've been my pick for sure. Since it wasn't there, I chose Sammy's aim because, well... it's horrible.
  7. Link: http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=387543 Has anyone else heard about this? Mason, their 1st string goalie is out 2 weeks due to an emergency appendectomy and they're bringing in Ben Bishop. Just though it was crazy that he's only 21, and he's a goaltender that stands 6'7". Crazy...

Why not Hossa on the point?

Technically Hossa fills that void. He proved to everyone time and again that he has one hell of a one-timer. He has a very hard shot that is not only accurate but extremely quick. I think Hossa would make a great point man. Fast, solid defensively, quick, hard shot...

So why did Zetterberg play so many preseason games?

He's just too Euro, too soft. He lacks grit.

    Dallas Drake

That's why we'll NEED Darren Helm. I'd start off by saying I think he's a great asset to the team and deserves a spot on the big club, but I'll finish by saying he'll be a MUST in the playoffs! He brings an energy and speed to our team that we'll need to get us fired up. He brings so much youth and energy and grit to the team...

    I have a man-crush on Darren Helm

Alright... same topic, new thread. Did anyone else think Darren Helm played another amazing game last night? Is it just me or does it seem like something's always happening when he's out on the ice? He's an amazing player... I still can't fathom how he hasn't been granted his shot in the big leagues, especially over Kopecky. He's fast as hell, but his best asset is that he gives 1,000,000% every time he steps on the ice. He's like a young Maltby (when Maltby was young) mixed with Dan Cleary. Fast, aggressive forecheck, in your face, able to throw the body, good offensive skills, takes shots, gets his own rebounds, etc. The kid's always working his ass off. Compared to half of our team, I think Helm deserves a spot. He's f'in awesome... I can understand him getting more minutes in GR, playing top-line minutes as opposed to 4th line minutes in Detroit, etc. Whatever. Just another game where I sit there and shake my head and wonder how he hasn't made the big team yet...

    Would you trade

Yikes... where to begin. The fact that you have Iginla and Lecavelier in your top 5 make me wonder. The fact that you have malkin and Crosby on the list and neither one of Zetterberg and Pav on there confirms it: You may not know what you're talking about. Next... Please, enlighten me, who are the best players on the Red Wings, then? No one said they were anywhere NEAR Crosby... the question was simply, "would you trade this guy for these guys, or even Crosby for just one." In either case, I wouldn't. Having been tutored by the best, Pav and Z have all of the training and role models they need to be great. On top of that, they fit into our system. Skill-wise, Crosby trumps them, but only in offensive-upside. Defensively, though, I'd take either Pav or Z, hands down. How'd the kool-aid taste?

Sidney Crosby is leading by the example

Welcome aboard! Just FYI, I don't bash on Crosby because all the cool kids are doing it or because it makes me feel bigger or more awesome. I bash on him because I hate him and, although I can acknowledge he's a great player stat-wise, I think he's kind of a crybaby. Anyone can put up great stats, not everyone can dive like Crosby!

Do you surgically attach yourself to any other player's nuts, or just Crosby's? Honestly, I'm sick of hearing this kid is the second-coming of God, himself. Sure, he deserves praise for the stats he puts up, I just get ruffled when there are fans everywhere with their Crosby-blinders on that think he's God on skates. He's young, and he's still got alot to learn about the game. Everyone can put the puck in the net, but only some can carry themselves on a higher level. The game and it's inner-workings has more to do with it than just putting up stats. I'm not jumping on his bandwagon just because I saw him on some Tim Horton's commercials or because Gary Bettman told me to. The kid still has a long way to go before he gets it. Until then, he does make for some pretty heated debates... And yeah... I watch as much hockey as I can ( a pretty large amount of my time is spent watching hockey games, doesn't matter what team ), I'm still not drinking the Crybaby kool-aid.

    I have a man-crush on Darren Helm

This post isn't directed at JUST these past 4 games, or the past 2 seasons. Have we already forgotten how well he played in last year's playoffs? He was arguably one of our top 5 players on the ice the whole time. He really did outplay alot of our team. He's earned his spot by now, IMHO, ESPECIALLY when Kopecky STILL fails to show why he's on the team...

In the same respect, age does come into play for Pav and Hank, as well... Nothing against Crosby, I have a tremendous amount of respect for what he did for their team and his own personal stats, but there's more than just numbers on a sheet. He lacks leadership. Yes, he was thrust into the captain position and the face/spokesman for the NHL, whether or not it was willingly, who cares. I understand he's young and it may come with time, but I hate the fact that he makes excuses for eveything. When his team was legitimately getting BEAT by the BETTER TEAM, instead of rallying his team, blaming himself for certain errors or mental lapses, recognizing where his team went wrong, he sat there and blamed the officiating, the calls, the bounces, the ice, the humidity level, the positioning of the stars, etc. Everything EXCEPT admitting that he had been outplayed. Pav and Hank would never do that. They're too classy. Pav and hank have devoted themselves to the Red Wings system, and with that they know they're expected to remain calm and composed in the face of adversity, and they do it flawlessly. When they play a down game, they acknowledge that, first and foremost, they could have played better. MAYBE they'll bring up a tough call, but for the most part, they're responsible and self-aware. They know they could've played better and that it was their own fault (most of the time) that they lost. Crosby, although his *points* are off the charts, his character does not fit the DRW system and I, for one, would DESPISE seeing him in a Wings jersey, I don't even care how good he is. Pav and Hank are the faces of the team, I'd keep it that way, hands down.

    Early reviews on Hossa

Hell, he looks so bad out there we should probably just concede the other 78 games and say f*** the playoffs. Sorry Hossa, you weren't good enough to win us the cup again, let alone 4 games. Thanks for a s***ty year. This thread came much too soon and makes me wonder about alot of you guys... I mean, I understand people wanting to talk hockey or picking their brains for conversation starters, but c'mon... hockey's finally back and everyone's still making "the sky is falling!!!!1!!" threads that are hardly relevant and hold very little water.
