I figured the buy-out amount for that example for the last 2 years of a four year contract. If you buy-out the last 2 years it is spread over 4 years.... and the amounts counted against the cap is a different amount according to this formula: Illustration #1: ( THESE ARE NOT THE NUMBERS IN MY EXAMPLE... The over 35 rule basically states that if a player retires the cap hit still remains for the length of the contract. It is a tradeoff...... in an effort to lower the cap hit for 2 years you are willing to take the same cap hit for 2 more years. If the salary cap rises it takes the sting out of the last 2 years. At any rate I think Lidstrom can play four more years anyway. Over 35 rule does not prohibit you from using the buy-out option the last 2 years anyway.... thus lowering the cap hit... but then it goes for 2 more years. The Wings NEED to take a lower cap hit for the next 2 years because of a possible decline in the salary cap. If Lidstrom is planning on retiring in 2 years.... then Wings could lower the first 2 years and think of the last 2 years as a "deferred payment". You could get the cap hit down to $2.63 mil for 4 years in the example below..... which I don't think is a big deal ..... and even less if you usee the buy-out option the last 2 years. These "creatvie contracts" will not be available in the next CBA..... you have to think outside the box. 1st year = 4.0 2nd year = 4.0 3rd year = 2.0 4th year = .55

It is called CAP RELIEF. It comes into effect once the cap space is gone... cap space is used up first. And cap relief is basically useless unless you happen to have NHL ready players playing for your AHL team or you have quality players with two-way contracts.... which is rare. In the past the Wings had NHL ready players playing in the AHL.... like Helm. Wings depth this year is not what is use to be.... which is why they are screwed. INJURIES PENALIZE teams the way the CBA is written. I don't think that was the intention. Hopefully in the next CBA when a player goes on LTIR it will actually ADD cap space. The ironic thing it that the Wings would have been better off if Franzen was out until the start of the playoffs..... then they could have gotten someone for whatever cap relief they would have received from Franzen being out..... but availability of good players is another issue.... once the playoffs start the salary cap is no longer an issue. The bottom line is you better have good depth and players in the AHL ready to come up and play quality minutes.

It was Homer, Datsyuk, Franzen. I think Homer and Datsyuk ARE nursing injuries..... the last 5 games they have not looked their normal self..... despite Bertuzzi. And I think that is why Babcock is NOT removing Bertuzzi from that line is because someone has to protect them so we don't lose ANOTHER player..... can you imagine if we lost Datsyuk now..... might as well not play the games.....

From MLIVE: Top Line Must Improve Really can't make any changes until Filppula gets back. Z's and Helmer's Line have been good.... so can't mess with them. Bertuzzi and Williams were wasted signings. LIke I said before both are/were dragging down their lines.

Good thing we don't see the Hawks again until after Filppula gets back.... Zetterberg and Fil know Hossa the best..... they will shut him down.... Cleary, Z, Filppula December 20 & 23rd.... back to back games with the Blackhawks. Yeh by the time we get to the playoffs Hossa and Quenville will screw up..... Wings Penalty Kill used to be in the top 10 of the league for the longest time. The last few years it has gone downhill. Now the PK is the WORST in the league on the road and 28th in the league overall. On the road the Wings are not only the worst team, they are almost 6% worse than the next worst team, Anaheim, at only 65.7%. That is embarrassing to say the least. Which coach is responsible for the PK? McCrimmon? It has gone down significantly since McClellan left for San Jose. The million dollar question is why? The best penalty killer is said to be the goalie. So is it Osgood's and Howard's fault? Is it because Lidstrom is aging and his reflexes are slower? Is it because of the coach and his teaching style? Is it because our once premier penalty killers Draper and Maltby are not as effective? Is it because Datsyuk and Zetterberg who also get a lot of PP time and 5 on 5 time are over-played? Is it because Wings aren't aggressive enough? Is it due to a lack of confidence? Is it poor defence from the rest of the defencemen? Is it the lack of enough shot blockers? Is it because they are not getting sticks in the lane? Is it because they are having trouble clearing the puck, lacking the patience to get a good shot out? Is it because they do too much stick handling and not playing the body, especially in front of the net? I don't understand. What's the problem? I am looking for individual player PK stats but can't find any anywhere. Anyone have a link? Maybe someone should turn this into a poll.
