Holland IS Searching for a Free Agent!

Jeff Cowan Assets Has good size and strength in fighting off players in the corners. Owns a deceptively quick shot and skating ability. Is extremely determined and feisty. Flaws Though he's determined and gutsy, he often loses a lot of fights. Is somewhat miscast playing on one of the top three lines. Will take a bad penalty. Career potential Fourth line winger.

Chris Gratton: Assets Has a great combination of size and two-way savvy. Displays decent hands and a mean streak. Is solid on face-offs and sound defensively. Flaws Has questionable hockey sense, which limits him in the scoring department. Isn't as complete a player as his package suggests. Career potential Checking line forward.

Holland IS Searching for a Free Agent!

quote "Back in Calgary, Sutter has made it clear that gritty centreman Stephane Yelle won’t be back in the Fall. Saying he was sure he would work with 34 year-old Sandbox again, he added the move came down to a matter of age. Yelle, an indispensable checker, has made a great impact on the team’s defensive mentality, and will easily find another position elsewhere. Able to work forward or even drop back to defence, he is a versatile role player in any game situation. He will be missed on the third-line forecheck, as old Yeller has left some big skates to fill."

How do these guys fit the gritty forward bill.... besides travis moen... for about 1.5 mil or less???? Most with scoring touch and most with size.... although not necessary in being gritty: (Detroit has lost some size) Tom Kostopoulos.... yes Jason Ward ...yes Taylor Pyatt.....yes Marcus Nilson...yes Chris Gratton ,,, yes Pat Rissmiller... no Manny Malhotra.... yes Radek Bonk... no Derek Armstrong...no Jiri Novotny...no Marcel Goc.. no Stephane Yelle ..... no...age Stephane Veilleux --- I remember Mickey Redmond liking this guy Jeff Cowan... no Brad Isbister ..... yes How about a couple of youngsters.... Lukas Kaspar & Mathieu Darche? Anybody know anything about these 2?

Still not adding up to me.

Assuming the 5% pay raise for Leino is correct, Hudler could conceivably get $2.9 mil..... and that is also assuming Lilja starts the season on LTIR.... Wings obviously are not going to be able to trade a player with a head injury. Although, at the start of the season the Wings must be cap compliant. Lilja on LTIR does NOT give them cap space ..... it gives them cap RELIEF. I don't know if cap RELIEF at the START of the year can make them cap compliant.... if it can then someone would have to be traded once Lilja comes off LTIR. Hudler, Jiri $2,900,000 Datsyuk, Pavel $6,700,000 Darren Helm $599,444 Cleary, Dan $2,800,000 Zetterberg, Henrik $6,080,000 Holmstrom, Tomas $2,250,000 Draper, Kris $1,583,333 Abdelkader, Justin $740,000 Maltby, Kirk $883,333 Franzen, Johan $3,950,000 Leino, Ville $920,000 Filppula, Val $3,000,000 Lidstrom, Nicklas $7,450,000 Rafalski, Brian $6,000,000 Stuart, Brad $3,750,000 Kronwall, Niklas $3,000,000 Ericsson, J $900,000 Lilja, Andreas LTIR Meech, Derek $483,333 Lebda, Brett $650,000 Osgood, Chris $1,416,667 Howard,Jimmy $716,667 TOTAL is $56,772,777.00 without Lilja's salary. Frankly, I think the Wings will trade Hudler..... and get someone like Moen or Malhotra or Bonk.

Holland "Not Optimistic" about re-signing Hossa

Add EITHER Hudler or Sammy... whoever accepts 1.7 -1.9 mil Leino - .875 mil Kopecky - .525 that's 56.8 mil right there with the 8 defencemen and 2 goalies. Meech is 8th defencemen & extra forward. Time for Fil to play a larger role and earn his keep. Helm will be sssoooo dynamic!

Holland "Not Optimistic" about re-signing Hossa

"not be able to pick up Hossa's production" REALLY??? When it REALLY matters: Filppula had 16 points in the playoffs, Hudler had 12 points in the playoffs, Hossa had 15 points in the playoffs.. Hossa had a VERY disappointing playoff performance.... and it is his own fault he didn't get a ring!!! There is a reason Hossa doesn't have a ring...... He is NOT a playoff guy who can take a team to a championship..... Regular season means SQUAT in the playoffs. I would rather have a player like Dallas Drake than a prima donna like Hossa in the playoffs ANYDAY! Hossa will never get a ring!

Holland "Not Optimistic" about re-signing Hossa

Howard has played a grand total of 9 games in 3 years! 9 games..... do you understand???.... 9 games..... what the h*ll do you expect someone to do in 9 games?????? Good grief man get a grip! And give someone a chance for Pete's sake! You try to get in a groove playing 9 games in the NHL over a three year span! ..... and he started only 7 of them.....
  14. Icesurfer

Holland "Not Optimistic" about re-signing Hossa

First of all, Filppula is already under contract. Secondly, Detroit already has 19 players under contract for next year signed for about 53.5 mil. That leaves only a total of about 3.3 mil to sign 3 forwards. So I don't know why you are talking about a "huge' cap space... that is ridiculous. Signing ONLY Hudler OR Sammy with probably cost around 1.9 mil. Leino's contract has to be renewed.... and most likely around .875 mil. That leaves about .5 mil for the last forward.... a minimum contract. Wings aren't going to be signing any "big name free agents"... ridiculous. I guess most hockey fans failed math!

Holland "Not Optimistic" about re-signing Hossa

well...well.. well... no sh*t??? Kenny must have been temporarily using the same accountant that gave the OK to all the dead contracts Dombrowski worked out with some of the Tiger players.... LOL...

    New Salary Cap $56.8 mil

It is NOT too many defencemen. Meech is a 2 way player and would be the 13th forward. With Lilja possibly going on LTIR and with the Wings having played ANOTHER long season, having 8 defencemen just may be what the Wings will need. Lidstrom may be having elbow surgery and his minutes WILL be cut again next year. IMHO Wings will need 8 defencemen..... especially since one of them is a valuable 2 way player. ..... 19 players are already signed and IMHO all will stay. In case anyone has noticed over the last umpteen years Holland is not one to be trading players away. He loves to keep the players he has and players usually leave of their own accord.... Federov, Schneider, Bertuzzi.... Holland tried to keep them all. And he hated parting with Quincey but he had no choice.
  17. Icesurfer

    New Salary Cap $56.8 mil

You can NOT count on saving 1.25 mil from Lilja. The Wings still must comply with the cap with his salary included at the start of the season. It does not give them free cap space to sign another player. If Lilja starts the season on LTIR then the Wings would get cap RELIEF up to the amount of his salary. **** Cap RELIEF is NOT the same as having cap SPACE. ****** So with Lilja's salary included and if he is on LTIR the Wings would bring up any defensemen in GR whose salary is less than or equal to 1.25 mil. And the miinute Lilja comes off LTIR the Wings must immediately comply with the cap.

    New Salary Cap $56.8 mil

These are the 19 players ALREADY signed for next year for an exact total of 53,462,777.00. Now.... you have to sign 3 forwards and you have exactly $3,337,223.00 to do it. Datsyuk, Pavel $6,700,000 Darren Helm $599,444 Cleary, Dan $2,800,000 Zetterberg, Henrik $6,080,000 Holmstrom, Tomas $2,250,000 Draper, Kris $1,583,333 Maltby, Kirk $883,333 Franzen, Johan $3,950,000 Filppula, Val $3,000,000 Lidstrom, Nicklas $7,450,000 Rafalski, Brian $6,000,000 Stuart, Brad $3,750,000 Kronwall, Niklas $3,000,000 Ericsson, J $900,000 Lilja, Andreas $1,250,000 Meech, Derek $483,333 Lebda, Brett $650,000 Osgood, Chris $1,416,667 Howard,Jimmy $716,667 IMHO, the 3 forwards signed for 3,337,223.00 will be Hudler OR Sammy for about 1.7-1.9 mil, Leino for about .875 mil, Abby or Kopecky for .525 - .740. Hossa wants 6 mil. If the Wings give him 6 mil for 5 years and 1 mil for an additional 15 years then his cap figure is 2.25 mil. It is possible but I don't know if Ilitch wants to have a wasted cap hit of 2.25 mil for at least 10 years. It is a 20 year contract.... but he could be on LTIR the last 10 years.... so it is more like having a deferred salary. ..... really makes a joke of the current CBA.

    New Salary Cap $56.8 mil

Play with the numbers man! Wings would have to dump Filppula or similar salary to sign him. Wings have 19 players signed for 53.5 mil. Thye need to sign 3 forwards. Assuming 2 of those forwards are at minimum of 500K that leaves a $2.3 mil cap figure to sign Hossa and retain those players they already have signed. Now unless the Wings come up with a 20 year contract that brings the cap figure down to 2.3 mil, Hossa is GONE!
  20. Icesurfer

    New Salary Cap $56.8 mil

At 56.8 mil Hossa is all but gone.... no way to sign him without dumping about 3 mil in salary. With Hossa gone Wings will be able to sign either Hudler OR Sammy but for no more than about 1.9 mil... depending on whether Leino gets same amount 875,000 and if Abdlekader starts in GR and Wings have some other minimum player at 500K for that last spot and keeping everyone else on roster including Helm and Howard.

    Freezing the foot...?

BINGO! I am thinking Z might have had some treatments on his wrist in Sweden instead of taking another cortisone shot... which was NOT recommended by some smart doc.

You are now a GM! Make your roster (Cap Calculator)

Buttman made it sound like the cap will stay the same. Based on that the total of this roster is: $56,677.777.00 Hudler, Jiri or Sammy $1,600,000 Datsyuk, Pavel $6,700,000 Darren Helm $599,444 Cleary, Dan $2,800,000 Zetterberg, Henrik $6,080,000 Holmstrom, Tomas $2,250,000 Draper, Kris $1,583,333 Abdelkader, Justin $740,000 Maltby, Kirk $883,333 Franzen, Johan $3,950,000 Leino, Ville $875,000 Filppula, Val $3,000,000 Lidstrom, Nicklas $7,450,000 Rafalski, Brian $6,000,000 Stuart, Brad $3,750,000 Kronwall, Niklas $3,000,000 Ericsson, J $900,000 Lilja, Andreas $1,250,000 Meech, Derek $483,333 Lebda, Brett $650,000 Osgood, Chris $1,416,667 Howard,Jimmy $716,667 12 forwards, 8 defensemen and 2 goalies. Meech a two-way player. 8 defensemen because of another extended season and some of these guys need a rest..... very key. Can't afford Hossa. Keeps the depth players. Between Hudler and Sammy .... whoever accepts 1.6 mil or less will stay..... Sammy will probably take less to give some cap space......can't keep both either. Holland is NOT a guy who will just waive a bunch of players.... as much as people want to dump Maltby he was still valuable in this cup run..... Holland is loyal to the players who are loyal to the organization..... Maltby has been a round a lot longer than Hossa and the Wings simply can't afford Hossa without dumping at least 3 players. In saying that next year is Maltby's last year on his contract anyway.

    Freezing the foot...?

Could have been referring to the use of Procaine. Cortisone is an anti-inflammatory and wouldn't be used. Procaine would numb the foot for a period of time so he wouldn't feel the pain. Procaine is a better choice to lidocaine. With ligament and tendon strains and sprains procaine is mixed with sterile water and 50% dextrose.... this therapy is referred to as prolotherapy...... and there are MANY different prolotherapy solutions and techniques. Prolotherapy is a wonderful technique to heal the sprain and strains quickly.... but few orthopedic docs use it because most are not familiar with it. Cortisone is a waist of time in the long run.... yes for acute inflammatory conditions it can reduce the inflammation... but in the long run the tendons and ligaments are weakened.... and most likely re-injury occurs. IMHO we will find out that Datsyuk probably has a hairline fracture of one of his metatarsals.
