Blue Jackets doing their homework for Wings -- literally
RedWingsRox replied to titanium2's topic in General
Great, now that Columbus knows our player's natural tendencies. It's time for us to outsmart them by being one step ahead of them. Like playing chess. -
Hudler - hometown discount 2-2.5 mill, he can only improve and get better. Check the 07-08 stats. Without Hossa, you'll notice that generally everyone had higher pts production in regular season. Don't get me wrong, I love Hossa but there are only so many slices in the pie. If you spend it on Hossa, like others say, you'll have to get rid of others and you won't have ANY options on goalie. I'm not comfortable with Ozzie and Howard. I think it gave everyone high blood pressure, including Babcock. Consistently losing games with 3-1 leads is not a Wings trademark. As for what goalie is available - I'm not sure who is available but what about Clemmenson, Khabibulin (has he resigned? he may be too $$), Fernandez, Nittymaki, Biron, Brian Boucher. Someone in the 3 mill range. We don't need elite but we can't be scraping the bottom of the barrel either. We've got enough good forwards, must improve the goalie situation!

Take Hudler over Hossa. With the cap space saved, use it for a half decent goalie. I'm serious. We cannot keep going with the present goalie situation. We've won the Cup without Hossa but we're not going to win another one with present goalie situation.

Great signing Holland but don't forget to save some money for a goaltender. Don't know if I can go through another year like this.
-
Looks like Hossa made the right decision.

I think we all know that the 2 major problems are: 1. Inconsistent goaltending 2. Shoddy defence. When you go down 2 goals in 5 shots, then down 3 goals in 12 shots ... like in Dallas, that's a pretty big hole to get yourself out of. Osgood is a character guy but let's face it, he is nowhere near where he needs to be and 1/2 the season has gone by. Osgood consistently lets in 2 goals in like the first 8 or 9 shots! What is with that? Babcock has tried everything to light a fire under his arse, but nothing is working. If we go into the playoffs like this, we can easily lose in first round. When a goalie plays like that, no one in front of him has any confidence. We don't need a 6 million dollar goalie to win but even the Wings can't win consistently with a goalie who is third last in stats (GAA). I'm afraid we need to treat Osgood like we did with Hasek, bench him and ride the more consistent goalie ... except this time, Osgood is the one being benched for Konk.

Empty netter !! Wow ... what a comeback! Don't know how we found ourselves down 4-3 with a rookie goalie but a win is a win.

I live in Vancouver and I'm sick and tired of Sundin this and Sundin that when he hasn't really done anything. This town is all giddy as you can imagine. Signed for 1 year 10 mil/yr or around 5.5-6 mil hit on the cap. Vancouver wanted 2 years but they'd do anything to get him so technically, about 5 month rental player. I think they paid way too much, he is about a 30 goal/yr player so for 1/2 a season, that works out to like $400,000 for every goal ... I know, I know ... he makes everyone play better blah blah blah. We'll see. I'm not convinced of anything yet.

Just saw the highlights ... sweet. Hope this is the start of something consistent. Great all around game ... we can beat the best!
-
Does our team have a specific goalie coach? I heard some teams do. And maybe a team psychologist to get the mental toughness back ... is Tony Robbins available for a pep talk?
-
That's fine. This year was mutually beneficial. He's entitled to wherever he wants to play and with whom ... he's earned it as UFA. Thanks and I hope we can win a cup together. No hard feelings.

Johan Franzen is one of the NHL's top 20 forwards.
RedWingsRox replied to BeeRYCE's topic in General
I like him a lot but statistically, he doesn't place on the top 20, goals or pts. But ssshhhh ... don't let him know that he is right up there or else we won't be able to resign him. -
Melrose did pretty good for himself. Worked for 16 games and get paid for like 3 years on a contract. Anyone know what TB gave him?
-
Hope Conk wins one for the newborn! Weird ... Ozzie is like 7-1-3 and I know his stats are pretty bad and his play as of late isn't anywhere near where it can/needs to be but, on any other team, those W-L-OTL numbers would be revered.

Hossa gets the hat trick on an empty netter, assisted by Datsyuk.
-
As much as I like Hossa and the fact that he is unreal, I like the Red Wings culture - loyalty, groom from within, winning over $$. Ideally, it would be great to keep everyone but since we can't, I'd like to think we will keep Z, Franzen, Datsyuk, and Holmstrom ... afterall, we won the Cup without Hossa.

PLEEEEZE ... no 5-3
-
Okay, let's see if we can get out of this period and regroup for the third. Let's just chalk 2nd period up to 2 games in 2 nights. Let's get that 2nd wind.
-
Well, at least no 5-3 coming anytime soon.
-
Last night, when we toyed with them for a period and spotted them a 2 goal lead, then started to play, and winning the game ... guess that was the last straw. Owners were stupid in the first place to let go Tortorella. Cliff Fletcher to the rescue now that his services won't be needed.
-
+ 1 for NOT missing Dom. He gave me fits some nights. Now Ozzie is doing that for me so no, I don't miss him.
-
Looks like he is on pace for 68.07 goals There is no 2nd line in Detroit. Just 2 first lines. Face it, our 2nd line could be 1st line on any other team. In fact, our third line may be better than some 1st lines of other teams.
-
Ya, my guess is that Conklin starts Wings 4 Florida 1 ... goal coming from the obligatory 5-3 called in the 3rd period against Wings.
-
Apart from defensive plays and/or breakdowns, I haven't seen Kronwall do his thing like he did during playoffs. He put the fear in players's eyes that came flying into the neutral zone with some mighty hits but where is that presence as of late?
-
Great win ... come from behind. Was a bit nerve wracking near the end but the Wings learned to tighten up from last game.
