Well commentators say Philly and San Jose are options but really, their management is a joke. They're no closer than the Wings to a Cup. But regardless, sad choices. According to some, 29 other teams would be willing to take Babs on and even fire their existing coach if necessary. More and more are not drinking the Babcock koolaid. If this story is true about McLellan in Edmonton, I'm kind of tickled that Oilers didn't even ask permission to talk to Babs .

You don't think even rich people would rather save $2.5m/yr over 5 years if the bottom line is about the same in terms of their profit? How is Babs going to put that many more butts in the seats? Rich people got that way cuz they're generally cheap *****s. OK, that's a bit of an extreme stereotype but generally true.

Edmonton doesn't need a $5m/yr Babcock when they can get McLellan for say $2.5m/yr ... end result won't be much different.

Public opinion my friend. The higher a coach is paid, the higher the expectation, especially with all the publicity in this salary setting case. The fickle Leafs fan chanted "Fire Wilson" and Burke did like the next day. Imagine if the $5-6M dollar man goes to TO and at the end of year 1, they go from 15th place to 12th ... I think this would be an interesting twist if Chiarelli doesn't drink the Babcock $5m/yr for 5 year koolaid and he doesn't request permission to interview Babcock and just go with McLellan instead. (Not a bad call on McLellan, solid coach for less) Imagine what that might do to Babs ego ... so no Crosby to coach, no McDavid ... you really want to go to Buffalo or the dysfunctional Leafs.

Babs would be a fool to take the $5m in Toronto ... if he can't deliver a Cup, which I don't think he can in Toronto, he'll be like any albatross player with a huge contract and cannot deliver. His legacy will go down the toilet if he goes to TO.

I don't see his quote as a 'guarantee', blowing things up. Media making it into a big deal. All players play with positive mindset, confidence, and vision of winning. If that was a guarantee, then 80% of pro athletes 'guarantee' a win.

Please say it isn't so ... heard on local talk radio that Toronto might be a front runner with north of $5m/yr for 5-6 yrs. If true, then I lose some respect for Babs for making $$ the #1 thing. Not like he was going to be struggling with any other offers on a team with more pieces that are closer to winning it all. If Toronto, he will need all 5 or 6 years and more to get that sh*tty team anywhere close. On the other hand, if Babs wanted to stay in Detroit maybe this is his not so stealth mission to steal inner secrets from other top teams

Trade them now before the music stops in the NHL Coach Musical Chair game.
