On the subject of Filppula, I thought he has looked pretty good tonight. He's had some grade-A quality scoring chances that he hasn't buried but he has been fairly effective I've thought.

Players do have a responsibility to PLAY just as much as teams have the responsibility to pay them. So yes, if a player retires, his contract is voided, except for that 35+ rule which I apparently don't understand.

Are you sure? I was under the impression that it worked like I had stated above (obviously.) I'd like to see the actual rule as it's written but I don't know where to look.

After a player turns 35, the club is responsible for paying out the rest of his contract regardless of whether or not he retires. Oh yeah, and it still counts against the cap. So those salaries would still be on the books for 10 years even though Hoss wouldn't be playing any more.
