    Remember when.....?

Wow, great thread - I had forgotten about a couple of them and really enjoyed watching the videos. Here are a couple of mine - I realized how good of a team the Red Wings are when I was trying to pick just a few "favorite moments". There are so many its hard to choose, but here's what I cam up with (a couple may have already been posted, I apologize if that's the case): This one is pretty obvious and has probably already been posted. I didn't see it, but I just glanced through the posts and watched videos I had forgotten about. Anyways, here's Yzerman's double OT winner against St. Louis in '96. Hands down my favorite goal of all time: Corey Cross beating the snot out of Steve Ott smack dab in the middle of the Hockeytown logo at center ice. The reason I love this doesn't have much to do with Cross, rather the makeup of the team that year, the lack of a lot of things from the top down, etc. I remember watching this and for some reason it has stuck with me ever since: Cleary's penalty shot in the playoffs against Calgary -- at the Joe. Listen too the place erupt - I remember watching this one as well with friends at school and almost jumping through the ceiling: Konstantinov absolutely destroying Forsberg during game 3 of the Western Conference in 1997 (listed to the on ice talk the camera pics up towards the end of the clip -- you'll hear a very unhappy Martin Lapointe): Game 4 of the 2007 playoffs against San Jose. Lang scores to tie it with :33 seconds left in regulation, then Schnider scores in OT to give the Wings the W on the road: Shanny gets 500 vs. Patrick Roy and the Avs Downey's payback to Ian Laperierre for his hit on Lidstrom. This game in general was awesome (minus Lidstrom's injury), you had Babcock about to jump the benches to get at Granato, a couple beautiful goals courtesy of Hank and co., and of course this: Finally -- I couldn't find a video of just what I was looking for, so here is this. I will never forget Dallas Drake, a guy who had been around for ages playing as hard as he could day in and day out no matter what team he was on, or where they were in the standings, finally getting a chance to raise the cup. The look on his face is definitely something that I will remember fondly -- he was beyond happy, he had literally achieved what he had only dreamed of:

    Don Cherry's Comments

I love Don Cherry -- he is entertaining as all hell. I mean you take it for what it's worth and leave it at that -- you don't like him switch the channel -- BAM, your problems solved. I wonder if all the hockey fans from the Welland, Ontario area are crying their eyes out over Cherry's scathing rant about Clutterbuck, or as he puts it "Buttercup". I can hear them crying from here, just like the Euro's over Cherry's comments about the motherlands own Alexander "I am a professional who gets paid millions yet act like a child" Ovechkin. WAIT, is this video of Cherry attacking another Canadian? Oh my god -- what a Xenophobe! Have any of you who are currently whining over Cherry and his comments ever heard the man talk about Tomas Holmstrom? I wouldn't expect you to admit it if you did - so I will shed light on what he's said countless times. Cherry has said that Homer is hands down the best player ever to do what he does. Better then Ryan Smyth (Canadian), better then Dino Ciccarelli (Canadian), etc., etc. Get over yourself, it is starting to get obnoxious. I mean the first two weeks after he said it was one thing, but don't you think it's getting a little drawn out by now?

Ha ha, would expect nothing less from you.

    Who signs 1st?

What -- are the Wings have a one man quota on dmen with any substantial size to their frame? We are undersized as is on the blue line, Ericcson certainly helps a lot in that department but we could use one or two more guys that posses the ability to actually move the opposition, use their big frame to block shots, etc. I do agree with you 100% about Conklin though.

    Osgood's goalie mask

You don't need skull's, demons, or teeth? Are you a NHL goalie deciding on what you need on your mask? I like Ozzie's mase too, but I really don't think it's necessary to denegrate or mock other goalies artwork. Ozzie likes it plain, which is great, and the other guys like theirs painted, which also is great --

    Anyone Hear This?

Wait a second -- Are we talking about the same Sid here? The Sidney Crosby I watch would knock anyone on their ass, however he would have no problem punching them in the ass -- Maybe that's what you meant... But hey, what can ya do -- stuff happens. At least it wasn't embarrassing as this absolute spectacle put on by none other then one of the Motherland's finest - Alexander Semin: HA HA, I can watch that video non-stop, I mean I can't remember finding a hockey video as funny as this in some time. The music makes it that much better too -- god, I love it. How much do you wanna bet that Crosby (as well as some of our guys) hear quite a bit of this from the opposition (this is second on my list of funny hockey clips behind the Semin temper tantrum seen above): Nice find!

    Osgood's goalie mask

Hey guys, I absolutely love goalie masks, the designs, different styles, etc., etc. Anyways here is a little bit if info I drudged up -- some of it is related to Ozzie's mask, some is related to one of my all time favorites, Dominik Hasek, and his mask and then I threw in a couple pics of my favorite goaltended masks in the NHL. None, of this is particularly new information, in fact I am sure you all pretty much have read it before in some capacity. Either way, I figured I would toss it up here anyways for fun. A USA Today piece from back in 2007 where Osgood talks about his mask, why he doesn't paint it and why he prefers the older style that he has worn throughout his career: Here is what Ozzie's "regular" mask, the one in which he was going to use, or was using when he got cut looked like design wise. This comes from a site that is auctioning off a "Chris Osgood Autographed Exact Replica Goalie Mask": More on Ozzie's style of mask: Here is a little excerpt back from '07 that talks about Ozzie's mask: Here is Hasek's when he was with the Wings. He kept the same birdcage helmet but got creative with it, well at least as creative as the style of helmet/mask allowed him too: Here is my man with a plan, Ty Conklin's head wear. I like it a lot, I mean it's nothing crazy, but looks smooth for sure:[/b] And then another view of Conklin's mask: Here are a couple of my favorite masks that goaltenders are wearing these days. Love the art, color scheme, all of that good stuff. Looking at these makes you think how hard it would be to actually paint one of these things. Vesa Toskala: Toronto Maple Leafs Kari Lehtonen: Atlanta Thrashers (Loving the Kill Bill references) Rick DiPietro: New York Islanders Here is the link to SI's goalie mask sideshow. Now I know this has been posted here before, I remember using it. But if you want to see 36 goalie masks in detail click here.

    Backbock Interview w/FAN590

I don't know if this was already discussed on the boards, but I hadn't seen it so I figured I would toss it up and if it was old news people would just ignore it. Anyways, here is an excerpt from Mike Babcock's interview with FAN590's Nick Kypreos and Darren Millard. It's some of that old school Babcock everyone loves -- definitely an interesting read. Again, I am sure a lot of you have already seen it via George Malik's "Snapshots", so if that's the case -- my bad. FAN590 & George Malik To download the entire Babcock interview just right click the headphone icon below and click "SAVE AS":
  9. Here is an awesome Aaron Downey interview from a little bit ago with one of the Red Wings interns, or who I think is an intern given the title "Intern Mike". Anyways it's a great chat, interesting perspective on some things that otherwise would go unknown, etc. They literally (they being Downey and the kid interviewing him) look at tape of some of Downey's memorable fights and Downey talks about the situations, why it happened, what was said, etc. Really cool stuff. PLEASE if you are part of the anti Downey, "Downey is worthless" crowd, refrain from starting another huge (and endless) debate. Also, the pro Downey crowd, please refrain from any attacking of the current lineup -- this too will simply lead to the debacle better known as "the toughness" debate. That said, I hope everyone enjoys the interview as much as I did:

    Detroit's Hot New Prospect!

The answer to this one is a big, fat, unequivocal -- NO. My man has absolutely turned from "hopeful prospect", to "what ever happened too....?" status fast as I have ever seen. He is garbage, after he left the Griffins last year he returned to the motherland where surely, unlike the worthless AHL he would once again rise to the super stardom he had come to love -- or not. Here are his numbers: 2007-08: Grand Rapids Griffins - 5 Games Played; 0 Goals; 0 Assists, 4 PM 2007-08: Ufa Salavat Yulayev (KHL) - 27 Games Played; 4 Goals; 6 Assists; 24 PM 2008-09: Ufa Salavat Yulayev (KHL) - 36 Games Played; 2 Goals; 8 Assists; 10 PM Thursday, May 1, 2008 With the expectations so many had for this guy you have to label him as a big time BUST. I wonder if the names Alexander Daigle or Brian Lawton mean anything to Igor? They certainly should...

Great Aaron Downey Interview w/Intern Mike (Video)

Hey do you know how he got the gig with the Wings? Or could you find out? What he does with them looks awesome and I would kill (as I a msure most on this board would) to have that job and the access to the Wings that it offers.

    Who signs 1st?

I agree, in fact I hope they trade Flip - he would fetch quite a bit, and give Holland (depending on the intricacies of the deal) some breathing room. Other then that I pray every night we resign Hossa asap -- I don't care if Franzen stays or goes, actually I agree that I don't want both on the team without a semi major move being made within our forward corps (see Fillipula). Conklin may be gone, but I think the Wings should start thinking of chalking Howard up as a loss and letting him go. There is a reason he has been in GR each year since being dubbed "the next Wings franchise goalie" its because he is streaky at best, and below par (in regards to NHL standards) at worst. Hopefully McCullom (who is now the next heir to the franchise goaltender in Detroit throne) gets to GR next year and shines. Until then, the goalie situation is up in the air somewhat. Trade Kronner too -- I like him, but he is more then expendable.

    Backbock Interview w/FAN590

Not really a Downey thread at all. The interview was pretty much dealing with the GM meetings and the possile rule changes/implmentations next year. More or less, the interview dealt with the topic pretty much consuming every major hockey outlet right now.

Great Aaron Downey Interview w/Intern Mike (Video)

Dude you should see my mans you tube page. How the hell he landed a gig with the Wings is beyond me -- he must know someone, or have a powerful dad b/c from the looks of it, "Intern Mike", seems to have an obsessive compulsive addiciton to the computer games such as HALO and Sim City -- amongst others. He also loves filming himself playing computer games, filming others playing computer games and filming pieces on new computer game accessories, etc. Take a look for yourself. I know, I mean I get so sick of it around here: "Intern Mike is overpaid", "Intern Mike isn't producing", "Why did Kenny give Intern Mike a NTC in his last contract", "Hossa or Intern Mike", etc., etc.

Great Aaron Downey Interview w/Intern Mike (Video)

Ya I know, that's the vibe I picked up from him too. I thought it was pretty cool to listen to his analysis of each of the fights they reviewed. I have never seen laid out there like that from any hockey player, let alone a Red Wing.

    Kopecky

I would settle for doing something to guys like Backes after running Ozzie multiple times in one night. But hey, I should know better then to expect that -- I mean he's a 4th line "grinder", they have no expectations of doing anything else then breaking even at the +/- and netting a handful of goals.bv
  18. sureWhyNot

    Kopecky

Need a tissue? I hate when people like yourself act as though a player on a professional sports team who is making a boat load of money and producing absolutely nothing shouldn't be called out -- as Kopecky was, when he was completely invisible night after night. He's doing better, and that's great, I hope he keeps it up. But in all reality "doing better" then what he had been doing for the 150 games prior to his heating up doesn't take a lot.
  19. Dude, where the hell do you pull these things from. What I am saying is really quite simple -- You posed an absolutely insane statement attacking the idea that: Unless you are literally delusional, I have no clue in this world how you could have possibly gotten the idea I was saying "Semenko should have won a few Hart trophies when he played with Gretzky instead of Gretzky winning them, since toughness is more important to winning in hockey than finesse is?" I mean really, you are out too lunch. What I was saying is that you are an idiot more or less for not realizing that Finesse (Gretzky) does not negate toughness (Semenko) in hockey -- or in this instance, the Edmonton Oilers during their dynasty years. Now that I have explained it as clear cut as I possibly could, I hope your idiotic statements where you "question" what someone is "really" saying will stop. You have the brain capacity of a jar of peanut butter bro. I am not saying this cause you disagree about the toughness aspect of hockey, I am saying it based on your comprehension and counterargument techniques -- if you can even call it that. Get it through your head -- A hockey team can have both fineness and toughness integrated into it's style of play. They are not mutually exclusive in hockey -- hence, the Gretzky/Semenko citation.
  20. Wow, you cannot seriously be this slow? It must be an act. You would have a point (even though it would be supporting the argument you were attempting to refute) if you brought up the fact that having Dave Semenko (on his line at that) in no way hindered Gretzky's greatness. In fact it probably aided it a hell of a lot more then anyone here will give it credit for. Semenko's toughness, in no way, shape or form took away from Gretzky's finesse -- then again I wouldn't be surprised if 50% of this board had no clue who Dave Semenko was. That said, I am having a hard time wrapping my head around the asinine statement you made above -- or should I say what you claimed (with what rationale I don't know) the guy you had quoted had said.

Ya that was an elbow. But I mean the refs aren't going to be there to save the day every time -- even though I think we all wish they would. I mean there is ryhme to reason in the statement "hockey is the only game that polices itself". Granted this only goes so far and in no way is literall it has some truth to it for sure. Bah, now Detroit going to the box. I refuse to whine about reffing, I think it is obnoxious - so I will bite my lip here. That said, here is a little clip of what I wish we could do this afternnon -- specifically in the second period right after the goal where the guy barreling to the net took Ozzie outta position: Ha ha, after an empty netter too. Retribution baby!
  24. sureWhyNot

3/14 GDT: Red Wings 5 at Blues 2

I agree with you in the sense that taking the abuse being dished out is both embarrassing and bulls***, but I think if any of the Wings went ahead and got retribution by the methods you are recommending that they would literally get pulverized. No exaggeration, I would seriously be worried about the health of whomever wearing the Winged wheel have a slash to the chest or whatever. Doing nothing at all is a horrible solution, one I hate as much as you, but we simply do not have the guys capable of handing it out, and more importantly guys that weather the storm that would follow an act of retribution. Ya, I know -- I didn't want to start a debate on whether or not the hit was clean because it is so far in the past. I was pointing out what would happen, if not worse, if Detroit tried to get retribution in the form of running Mason, or taking a cheap shot -- which they definitely should seeing as though we have been bullied all game - but simply can't given the mentality and temperament of the lineup. Oh how right you are! Oh -- I also figured out how Ozzie is attempting to plug the holes in his game. He supposedly is supporting these bad boys underneath the mask. Look how sleek, and unnoticeable they are:

3/14 GDT: Red Wings 5 at Blues 2

Don't you realize that if we were to do anything resembling what you are "wishing for" that we would literally get pounded into the ice. Much like what Walker did to Franzen a couple years ago after the hit on Jackman -- and the hit was legal -- imagine how bad the absolute ragdolling would be if we did anything to Mason. Here is a little reminder of why it is probably best the Wings do NOTHING except continue to take whatever the Blues throw at them -- I know it's not ideal, but unfortunately it is a reality: *God, it's embarassing to watch.
