Russia/Canada Revisit the Summit Series
cusimano_brothers replied to GMRwings1983's topic in General
I think Canadians would sooner look at it as payback. Payback for all the great Canadian players who had to put up with the "Soviet Backcheck". You know, "tap, tap, tap", at the backs of their legs and their ankles, by defencemen and forwards alike as they were skating back up the ice, knowing full well that the odds of not being caught the the referees were in they're favour. Sure it was gutless, but they did it because they got away with it. Remember too that at that point in the Series, the Soviets had a 3-1 advantage (with 1 tie). Message sent, message understood. -
The Club has won the Stanley Cup three times with an Away Games Points Percentage of less than 0.500: 1935-36, 1942-43 and 1953-54. The lowest was 1953-54, 0.471.

Russia/Canada Revisit the Summit Series
cusimano_brothers replied to GMRwings1983's topic in General
Stuff about Team Canada and the Summit Series: 1) Of the thirty-five man roster, seven players played in all eight games, while five played in none. 2) Fifteen players have been elected into the Hockey Hall of Fame; two of them played no games. 3) Two goaltenders played the same number of games. 4) "The Slash" was arguably the turning point of the Series, although both Canadians would later diminish their roles. 5) One player scored three game-winning goals and, except for USSR comebacks, would have had two more. 6) In the blink of an eye, the same moment is captured by two different individuals. 7) Game Four was important for two major reasons: A) Phil Esposito gave his famous post-game speech and B) The fans reaction, both during and following the game, was embarrassing to both the players and to the rest of the country. This was the touchstone game of why people have come to realize that Vancouver has some of the most ignorant hockey "fans" in all of Canada. -

I had a reply all set, ready to go. I start typing and the door bell rings. I go to answer it, open the door and it's the "Thought Police". They reminded me that I have changed my mind. -

Seeing him watch his "error in judgement" on the big screen last night was priceless.

I know some people are disappointed that names wern't named, but this is a good read nonetheless. What I picked out of it: 1) His biggest phobia was fear of failure 2) Sean Avery is the only player he didn't respect. 3) A close second was Donald Brashear. 4) As a head coach, Wayne Gretzky "could not have been worse". 5) Following the morning skate, then-Canadiens head coach Jaques Martin would tell the media who was playing, but left the team in the dark as sort of a "power trip". However, players would check the Internet for the information. 6) While an Oiler, he was invited for, and regularly accepted, dinner at the homes of Edmonton families, as a Public Relations move. After awhile, one change was made: a team official went along, because they didn't know who was out there. 7) His story about snoring, and how he used it to get a "perk" is a classic. I wouldn't be surprised if someone else tried it before Laraque, but I've never heard of it. What I found most refreshing is the following paragraph:

Columbus GM Reveals Nash Demanded Trade
cusimano_brothers replied to Doc Holliday's topic in General
For what it was worth: when the idea of Nash being dealt to the Leafs was talked about on Sportsnet (one of their radio/television "simulcasts") last week, Doug MacLean said that if Nash went to Toronto, he would immediately become the leader in the dressing room. I guess they're still looking for one.
