Another log for the fire; from the Denver Post.

You are correct; from: Capitals winning but whining. (For the record, CBC sports executive director Scott Moore, said Hockey Night in Canada didn't want the games on consecutive nights either, but there were problems with building availability. "There was a Yanni concert in Pittsburgh's building," Moore said.)

Back this series? Yes. Back next season? Yes. But, of greater concern, is this:

In Brampton's Fourth Round Series vs. Brampton (Series H), for the OHL Championship, McCollum's totals were: Game #4: 36 shots (12-15-9), 32 saves in a 4-1 Windsor win. Windsor leads the series 3-1. From: Toronto Star. "After the game, Brampton's biggest concern was the health of goaltender Thomas McCollum, who was injured with 2:57 left in the game after a collision with Spitfires forward Dale Mitchell, who appeared to have been tripped by a Brampton defenceman. "I don't know how that's not a five-minute penalty," said Battalion head coach Stan Butler. "For some reason in this series (the referees) just put their whistles away and go back to 1970s standards." McCollum was tended to by the Battalion trainer before leaving the game. When asked about the status of the Detroit Red Wings prospect, all Butler would say was, "I'm not a doctor."

This is pure CYA by the NHL; the only thing missing is the "he got a speck of dirt in his eye" excuse. Just another item for the agenda of the summer meetings. The new motto of the League could be: The NHL: We're quick to respond, but slow to react.

No suspension for Kunitz cross-check on Varlamov
cusimano_brothers replied to edicius's topic in General
I just looked up the word "consistent" in the dictionary and there is no mention of the NHL. Maybe they'll use this play as part of a "training video" for referees...next season, of course. -
If this game had've been in Pittsburgh, he wouldn't have said a thing.

Let's see what the Coach has to say; taken from today's Toronto Star: BETTER WINGS: Wings coach Mike Babcock had a message for Pavel Datsyuk and Marion Hossa, his top-line forwards that are so far without a goal against Anaheim. "Your best players have to be your best players," said Babcock. "The good thing about those guys is they know what's taking place thus far in the playoffs and in this series and they know they have to be better. But we could all be better." And, that's why he is Coach Babcock.

I've recognized this as being a problem throughout franchise history, with this decade being the worst and the 1990's being the best: 12W-6L. The Club has had 86 overtime playoff games, with a record of 38W-48L. In the seven decades they've played, they have been a plus in only 3. I thought it might be mutliple-overtime games that brings the totals down, but it's not; in 27 multiple-overtime period games in franchise history, the Club's record is 15W-12L. In this decade, the Club has played 7 multiple-overtime period games, with a record of 3W-4L. Of the 15 overtime losses this decade, even if you take 1 of every 5 losses and made it a win, it still ends up only 11W-10L. I even looked at this decade's single-overtime period playoff games, breaking the period down into quarters, for each five-minute part of the period, to see when the game-winning goal was scored. In the Club's 3 wins, they came in: 1Q:1 2Q:1 4Q:1. In the Club's 11 losses, they came in: 1Q: 5 2Q: 4 4Q: 2. A bright spot I found was this: in the 11 Stanley Cup winning seasons, in 27 overtime playoff games, the Club's record is 16W-11L. See, it's not so bad.

For example, from wikipedia dot com: "On June 8, 2006, Wang dismissed interim coach Brad Shaw and announced the hiring of Nolan as the new head coach. New York Post hockey columnist Larry Brooks quickly criticized Wang for hiring Nolan at the same time that he hired a new general manager, Neil Smith, rather than allow Smith to hire a coach who would report to him. On July 18, Smith was fired as general manager and Garth Snow was named as his replacement." ("Nolan" being former DRW Ted Nolan) In the world of sports franchise management, there is the right way and the Wang way.

Will Shanahan or Fedorov Retire in the Offseason?
cusimano_brothers replied to GMRwings1983's topic in General
In answer to the OP: no to both. Current salaries: Shanahan: $800,000 Fedorov: $4,000,000. Shanahan signed with New Jersey for family reasons; Fedorov signed with Washington for... No mask and gun needed in that robbery. -

Getzlaf's TOI was 27:55, which was more than either Pronger (26:43) or Niedermayer (26:22). It indicates that he doesn't know how to play in a "system". Come to think of it, Anaheim doesn't have a real system; case in point is Parros, who gave them an outstanding 4:10 TOI in Game One. Maybe the stories about players not listening to Coach (?) Carlyle are true.
-
What was Perry thinking? He must not have read the scouting reports. Either that or Coach (?) Carlyle didn't ask his team the "skill-testing" questions that Hitchcock asked Columbus.
-
That was some of the worst camera work I have ever seen on a CBC hockey broadcast; a community cable television station could have done just as good a job.
-
Randy Carlyle is part of what is wrong with the NHL.
