    Rangers vs Flyers

From the "Recap" of the game at nhl dot com: Flyers defenseman Braydon Coburn was ejected in the closing seconds of the middle period after hitting Antropov in the head with his stick near center ice, drawing a match penalty. New York scored only once on the advantage, but coupled with Andrew Alberts' charging infraction on Avery, Philadelphia was short-handed for the first 7 minutes of the third. "It was retaliation," Coburn said. "I was kind of protecting myself. I thought he was going to come at me again." As for the Girardi hit on Richards, this is part of the mess the League wants to stop now. He could have bided his time and picked a better moment later in the game. He was thinking about his actions but not about the consequences. But, the on-ice officials had better make this call all the time or they, and the League, will look like fools.

300 Career Wins with one team

And, with 2565 wins so far, that figure of 651 wins accounts for a 25.4% winning percentage of games played; of every four games played by the DRW, one win has been recorded by either Sawchuk or Osgood. Outstanding!

    Strap 'em up, boys!

I thought the name and the team sounded familiar; from The Canadian Press Story: "The 19-year-old is the son of former NHL coach Ted Nolan."

Jordan Nolan. Maybe Nolan already has a rap sheet on Mr. Branch's desk.

300 Career Wins with one team

Osgood's 299 wins, in 520 games played, account for 57.5% of his games with the DRW. When you add that to the 352 wins by Sawchuk, their total of 651 account for 11.6% of all the games played by Detroit in franchise history. Osgood's numbers are very impressive and he should be looked at in the same way.

This might make a good "pay-per-view", but I doubt that the "discussion" will ever take place: Bettman would welcome fighting discussion with Laraque.

    Holland's Tie-Breaking Rule

From nhl dot com, at the bottom of the standings: Tie-Breaking procedure Division leaders are seeded 1, 2, and 3 in Conference standings. If two or more clubs are tied in points during the regular season, the standing of the clubs is determined in the following order: 1 The fewer number of games played (i.e., superior points percentage). 2 The greater number of games won. 3 The greater number of points earned in games between the tied clubs. If two clubs are tied, and have not played an equal number of home games against each other, points earned in the first game played in the city that had the extra game shall not be included. If more than two clubs are tied, the higher percentage of available points earned in games among those clubs, and not including any "odd" games, shall be used to determine the standing. 4 The greater differential between goals for and against for the entire regular season. Before they added #1, there was #2, #3 #4 and if #2, #3 & #4 still couldn't break the tie, a conference call was made and there was a coin toss. In this decade, the DRW totals are: Wins - Overtime Wins - Shootout Wins = Net Wins 2000-01: 49-10-0=39 2001-02: 51-10-0=41 2002-03: 48-7-0=41 2003-04: 48-7-0=41 2005-06: 58-4-4=50 2006-07: 50-3-2=45 2007-08: 54-2-5=47 2008-09 (through 43 games): 43-6-2=35

    Westward, ho!

Kansas City Ribs? I think the two key elements in the article are: "Wang has been after – and has been promised – a new or refurbished Coliseum for years. But the project it's attached to is hung up in an environmental assessment and taking far too long for Wang's liking." and "The Islanders' lease expires in 2015, but some believe he'd move the Islanders before then. Commissioner Gary Bettman has publicly supported Wang's call for a new or retrofitted arena." In the world of business negotiations, this is called "leverage, with the boss covering your back".

The Prince of Wales Trophy. The DRW have won the Prince of Wales Trophy as League Champions 12 times and in seasons 1948-49 through the 1954-55, they won it 7 consecutive times.

Spezza gets done for an illegal stick

I heard this quote from Maple Leaf Head Coach Ron Wilson on TSN this morning and the story in the Toronto Star has it: "Our players competed like heck," said Wilson. "I wanted at the end to give our guys a chance to win, they tried so hard. The guy is using a stick that's not only illegal but dangerous. I had an opportunity to call it, so I did." Coach Wilson: putting it all on the line for the team! No wonder Donald S. Cherry calls him "Little Napoleon"; those wheels are always turning. Spezza's quote, from the same article: "Real dangerous, I guess," said an annoyed Spezza sarcastically. "They told me (the blade) was too skinny. I shave them down to be skinnier." The problem, as officials found, was indeed that the height of Spezza's blade was below regulation as it approached the toe. Wilson said he's been aware all season that the centre was using an illegal stick. The players all know that their sticks and it's their responsiblity to make sure they are legal. Spezza got caught.
