SI: Future Cup Final to be played at neutral site?

Did McGuire make that up? The real clincher is that might just be a balloon being floated by that balloon-head is the line: "This could creat (sic) a Super Bowl-like environment at the star (sic) of the finals and potentially expand the NHL fanbase." How the Clubs should be doing that is exactly the way Mr. Holland and the DRW organization is, and has been, doing: Putting a winning product on the ice. Sometimes, McGuire just hasn't seemed the same ever since he took that puck to the head, and got the super-glue to the scalp, when he was doing colour commentary at ice level.

Summer 2010: Use Lidstrom's cap space to sign Luongo?

Signing a goalie to a big, lengthy contract is not a smart thing to do. Case in point: the Islanders and Rick Dipietro. They would love to have a do-over on that one. The Canucks will probably follow suit and do that with Luongo. Besides, they ask him if he wants to be made Captain and he says yes! How does he find a uniform big enough to fit that ego into. And, for a goalie as young as he is, he is already a frequent flyer on the injured list.

    Conklin with 5 shutouts already!

I looked up the Penguin Media Guide online on their website. Fleury went down around Christmas '08; his last game played at that time was 23/12 and Pittsburgh's record was 18W-16L-2OT. Conklin then played the next 11 games, then switched with Sabourin for a few games. Fleury's first game back was 04/03; at the time, Pittsburgh's record was 26W-17L-37OT. In the period from Game #36 to Game #66, Pittsburgh went 18W-7L-5T. And, they sure wish they had Conklin now!

    Conklin with 5 shutouts already!

The rest of the League wishes they had the "goaltending problem" the DRW has right now. And make no mistake: Conklin stepping in last season when Fleury when down kept them in a position where they could compete in the East.

    Bill McCreary

Of the current crop of referees, I think McCreary is the best. Besides, making calls by the rules fall into either too many or not enough in all NHL games. Enough with the conspiracy theories.

    Jason Williams...back in the Central.

Williams always showed signs of being better-then-average when he was with Detroit. Curious what the back story was as to why he was traded in the first place.

    The Montreal Canadiens are overrated

The media will prey on any team with a weakness and in Montreal they are always looking for the least little bit of blood. Remember how everybody used to attack the goaltending of the DRW (correction: a lot still do)? There have been too many examples to list here, but Tim Cheveldae comes to mind. In Montreal, its times worse, because they all want the next "saviour" in goalie pads to be the next Patrick Roy. Plus, everyone second guesses the Club's choice for head coach. There's a few with "former Montreal Head Coach" as part of their bio. Prior to the start of the 2008 Playoffs, TSN had two "pundits" square off, as to the teams with the best chance to win in the postseason. The sports writer, who took up the cause for the Western Conference, the made this statement at the end of the piece: "The Eastern Conference has the better players, but the Western Conference has the better teams, and better teams win in the playoffs".

    An Interesting Stat

Of the 23 Stanley Cups won by Montreal: 10 Cups have been won in 6-club NHL, but 13 Cups have been won in non 6-club NHL. I looked up "downhill slide" and got references to Chicago and Toronto

    Strap 'em up, boys!

I think the speed in which League President (also Commissioner of the CHL) David Branch takes action, with regards to what happens to players in other Leagues and the safety of the players he oversees (eg, Richard Zednik last season and the rule regarding "neck collars") has always been better for the game.

    Ticket/Seating Question

I've been twice: the second time was Standing Room (which was brutal), but the first time were high Upper Bowl, behind the opposition goal. These were the best bad seats I've ever had at any game; most of your "head swivelling" is kept to a minimum. So anything lower would be even better. Good luck.

    Winter Classic ratings

I'm not sure where the figures are buried, but after every bill was paid after last season's WC in Buffalo, the League made off with a load of cash (not the League needs it). The ratings-increase news is better off for the League; a staffer may have to explain to Bettman that this "tradeoff" is good.

    Larry Aurie's #6

This is what I have learned, through research done twelve years ago, about the case of Lawrence Henry Aurie. The Retiring of Aurie’s “#6” On March 20, 1938, the Red Wings held “Larry Aurie Night”. There was tremendous speculation regarding the night, as rumors were swirling about what was going to be announced; a job as a Scout or maybe a Coaching position with their Pittsburgh farm club in the IAHL lay ahead for Aurie, who had already announced his retirement at seasons end. The Club themselves said something big was going to happen. During their game with the New York Rangers, the following took place, as printed in the March 21, 1938 edition of the Detroit “News”: “Before the second period both teams filed out to the blue lines while Harry Kendall, representing a committee of fans, presented the veteran with a silver tea service. Baskets of flowers were the gift of the Olympia Ushers’ Club and Frankie Boucher, who has been more accustomed to trying to flatten Aurie than congratulating him, skated over to shake his hand and present a testimonial letter from the Rangers. After the game Adams announced that the big, block “6” Aurie carried through so many campaigns never again would be worn by a Red Wing. ‘It wouldn’t seen right for any one else to wear it”, he explained as Larry’s teammates nodded agreement.’” The First Un-retiring of Aurie’s “#6” Aurie was down in Pittsburgh, where he was Player-Coach of the Hornets. Sometime before the game of January 10, 1939, Coach and General Manager “Jack“ Adams phoned Aurie, asking for any kind of help he could send to the parent club. At the time, Detroit’s record, after 25 games was 7W-14L-4T. Adams was thinking in terms of prospects being loaned the the parent club; Aurie had other ideas. The day of the game, he arrived with his skates and two sticks, ready to play. He dressed for the game and scored the first goal in a 3-0 win over Montreal Canadiens. He retired for a second, and last, time from the NHL following this game. The Killing off of Old Traditions In the “Red Wing Book”, by Andrew Podnicks, he has chapter entitled “Detroit Red Wings Trophies”. It deals with six trophies that used to be awarded annually to different players. One of them was last awarded in 1976-77, while the other five were last awarded in 1980-81. Bruce A. Norris sold the Club in 1982. The awarding of these trophies stopped with the Norris ownership, but could easily have been continued by Mr. Ilitch, but he chose not to for whatever reasons. So the stopping of old traditions started before the present ownership and didn’t start with the Aurie story. But it is another example of how, one by one, any remote connection with the early years of the Club (unless it was “big name”) has been severed. In the eyes of current ownership, Aurie was not “big name”. However, in the history of the Club, and especially with the maintaining of its tradition, he is big name and should be so honoured. He was the first player honoured by the Detroit Hockey Club and that honour should remain and be made official.

    Your (Homer) Statements Here

The Original "Production Line" (Howe, Abel, Lindsay) is the greatest NHL line of all-time. The DRW have the best hockey organization, top to bottom, in the NHL. Detroit also has, without question, the greatest NHL tradition ever (just be sure you remember to boil it before you sneak it in).

If the Phoenix Coyotes folded today . . .

Just one of a few "solid" franchises, acording to "Inspector Gadget". His "State of the League" statements at the ASG are always funny. Idea: let them wallow in the desert, running on League money being pumped in, until the end of the season. Then move them.
