    Bruins fans are dumb...

Good guess: 1998-99, lost in Conference Semi-Final. Since then, they've gone out in the first round 4 times and (gasp) failed to make the Playoffs 4 times. Their best Playoff since 1998-99 was 2004-05.

    1/10 GDT: Red Wings 3, Sabres 1

I notice a lot of this from sportscasters: "Wed Wings" "Wed Rings" "Red Rings". Like the old line from the comic strip "Tank McNamara: "Nort Spews".

    "The Courage of Detroit"

Excellent article. I used to make an annual trip every season to Detroit for a weekend of baseball, starting in 1983 until 1989. What I remember is this: you could start up a conversation with anyone about sports, usually depending on the time of year and who was winning. The exception was hockey: people in Detroit would talk about the Red Wings any time of the year, especially from 1986-87 through 1989-90 when Jacques Demers was Coach and had them in the playoffs three straight seasons, no small feat in those days.

Grabovski suspended three games for abuse of an official

I'm glad to see that the new "grit" paid off for Toronto last night. Hmm, let me check the score. Oh well.

    McCollum Traded

Some of the DRW management went to Ottawa to talk to him, following the game with Canada. They told him not to worry, don't get down on yourself, our regard for you hasn't changed. Nice touch.

    Winter Classic Jersey Auction

There is an auction going on at the League website, partnered with the MeiGray Group, of "game-worn" and "game-issued" jerseys. For the auction of: "Detroit Red Wings - #25 Darren McCarty - White 2009 Winter Classic Game-Issued Jersey" there is a line in the description stating: "the actual jersey prepared for use by #25 Darren McCarty of the Detroit Red Wings during the second period of this historic event." What happened in the second period? Were team pictures taken? He's with the Club now, but not on the game roster or scratch list, correct? But, I'm begging you: please, don't everyone go over to the website at once. It runs slow enough now and a sudden surge might crash it.

Sean Avery and the All-Star Game

Sit him in a dunk tank, fans take shots, money goes to charity. Not with guns though; that would be wrong.

The JLC is one of the best arenas I have ever seen a game in. If you have never been there and someone tells you that they have tickets to a game and asks if you want to go, do not pass on it.

Go Knights Go! I think TSN said tonight that London was not going to dress him for the Friday game.

    Osgood vs. Conklin

The way Coach Babcock handled the starting goalies last season worked out just fine. I'm sure he'll handle it just as well this season. And, as of right now, he has more to work with than most clubs and he hasn't had to worry about a long-term injury to either Osgood or Conklin (Note: listed by seniority).

Lidstrom & Datsyuk Make All Star Team

Glad to see some common sense was used in the addition of the Detroit players. Maybe it is time for the League to borrow/steal/re-invent the idea used in Major League Baseball: the Conference that wins the All-Star Game also gets home-ice advantage in the Stanley Cup Final.

    Leafs acquire Brad May

Ah, "Skateaway" May. Mayor Miller of Toronto is planning the route for the Stanley Cup parade as we speak. May was in Vancouver when Burke was GM there as well. This may be the first of many deals coming to "Anaheim East".

    Jarkko Ruutu bites Andrew Peters

They are both part of what the League needs to clean up now if they want to improve their image: a carney sideshow.

    Retire #4

"some scrub"= Marc Reaume. If we talk about Defencemen who changed the way the game is played, in order of career: Doug Harvey, Leonard Kelly, Bobby Orr. Starting in 1956-57, a player returned to the ice from serving a penalty if the opponents scored. Prior to this, the penalized player sat in the penalty box for the whole penalty, so multiple power-play goals on the same penalty were quite common. The League saw an "unfair" advantage being held by both Detroit and Montreal.

    World Junior Championship

"The True North strong and free!" Congratulations to the Team Canada Men's U20 squad on a tremendous effort. And a special nod for a great job done by the coaching staff. What helped: o-for-6 on the PP. This just in: 9.5, 9.4, 9.9, 9.8. 9.8 (results in the "Swedish Goaltender Diving Competition"). And, for those of you who know what the "50-50" is: the winner at last night's game took home $50,000!
