Great Aaron Downey Interview w/Intern Mike (Video)
Yzersyukstromberg replied to sureWhyNot's topic in General
I really enjoyed Downey in that interview....none of the regular generic commentary you hear from most players...but Intern Mike REALLY lacks in the interviewing skills category. -
It means that Gary Bettman is frothing at the mouth....that's how bad he wants a team in Las Vegas. This is the first step. The next step is moving the Phoenix Coyotes there.

I'm happy that D-Mac has managed to turn his life around, but I think he'd be best served staying in the AHL. In all of the games he played in Detroit since his return last spring, he looked a step behind the pace (in my opinion). D-Mac could likely still be a contributor at the AHL level, but I think his days of being a competent NHLer are behind him.

I would say that the chances of us being able to sign both Hossa and Franzen are very, very low. With Franzen now setting a new career best for goals scored in a season (28), his price tag will probably be somewhere around a $4 million/yr cap hit, and we already know Hossa will command somewhere between $6-7 million/yr cap hit, even with a discount. Ken Holland is smart enough to know that if he signs both of these players, he's going to have to part ways with Samuelsson, Hudler, probably Leino, as well as either Kronwall or Stuart (if his NTC could be waived), and maybe even someone like Filppula. I just don't think it's worth it. Two goal scorers won't fill the void caused by losing several solid contributors.

Haydar's numbers aren't that 'great'. He's only managed 69 points in 67 games, which isn't exactly that big of a deal, especially in the AHL. On top of that, he's a -18, which means he's a liability defensively...and that doesn't fly in Detroit. I'd say the odds of him being brought up to Detroit are somewhere between slim and none.

Don't be a Canadian hater...no need for it. TSN is not biased at all in my opinion, and when you sit there and say that all the Canadian teams suck, you're absolutely wrong. Calgary and Vancouver are two very solid teams that could be very strong opposition for whomever they play come playoff time.

What exactly is so awesome about them? They've been wearing the same jacket for a few years now...

If the Wings can't go to the Cup final, I'd prefer they just cancel it altogether and wait til next year so the Wings can go at it again....lol....just kidding. Even though I'm confident it will once again be the Wings in the final (versus New Jersey), if I couldn't choose the Wings, I'd want to see the Capitals play against the Blue Jackets in the final, with the Capitals coming out as the champion.

It's going to be tough for your Ducks to win the Cup when they start golfing right at the end of the regular season. Sorry!

It's listed on detroitredwings.com, under 'FAN ZONE' --- 'DRW FOUNDATION' --- 'Community Calendar' Sat, March 28 Wings' practice for Kids' Club members at Joe Louis Arena That's what it says...not sure if they're opening it up for the general public. Hope this helps.

Actually you're a bit off there... Fedorov won the Hart Trophy in 1994, which is the trophy presented for league MVP. You're thinking of the Art Ross that Gordie won back in 1963, which is presented to the highest point-scoring player in the league. ... As for Datsyuk, the difference in goals scored between himself and Zach Parise has nothing to do with the Lady Byng trophy. The trophy is awarded to the most gentlemanly player in the NHL, and it doesn't matter who scored more goals...so I'd still pencil in Datsyuk is the favorite to win the Byng. As for the Norris, I think Nick will still make the 3 finalists, but whether or not he wins it this year is going to be a close one. I think the finalists will come down to Chara, Lidstrom and Green. The winner is a toss up at this point. I'd still have to put Datsyuk in as a contender for the Selke trophy again this season. Winner??? Maybe, maybe not, but he'll be right there at the end of the voting.

The problem I see with their 5-on-3 powerplay strategy, is that they treat it exactly the same as the 5-on-4. Too many long shots from just inside the blue line, when they should be taking advantage of the 2-man advantage and moving the puck around closer to the net for the high percentage opportunity. I watch other teams' 5-on-3 attack, and it just seems that the defensemen are quicker to slide in closer to the net, with the intention being that all of the opportunites, even shots from the d-men, are taken from close proximity to the net. The Wings' d-men seem to hold their position within 5 to 10 feet of the blue line far too long, and only begin to pinch in after the puck has been cycled around the half boards for some time. I'm definitely not sitting here thinking I know more than Babcock and his coaching staff, because the simple fact is that the Wings' power play is still clicking at 27%...which is outstanding, but I honestly think the Wings are more effective on the 5-on-4 advantage, simply because their strategy suits that type of a situation better.

I think Shick always sported a pretty sweet porn stache. I'm going to miss it. I think he's removed it in recent years, but I could swear he used to have a pretty sweet one. Anyways, I always thought he was a pretty good ref...too bad he's hanging up the skates. *edit- name spelling*

It's good to know that when the Wings choke, the Sharks choke even worse, against worse competition.

Who cares what THN thinks...just kidding. My pick for this year's Stanley Cup Final: Detroit Red Wings vs. New Jersey Devils.....a rematch of the 1995 Cup Final. This time, the Wings will get their revenge...14 years later. Wings in 5.

What a disappointment. Lilja was easily our most improved player this year... Let's at least hope he'll be OK, and ready to go for the playoff run. In the meantime, it'll be a nice opportunity to see what Ericsson has to offer. eseagull

Meech isn't a callup. He's been on the team all year long. In fact, Meech can't even be sent down to the minors without clearing waivers, so that's not an option.
-
He had a good couple of games, but if it's a salary cap issue, then there's not much you can do about it. I'd rather have Holmstrom in the lineup over Downey any day.

Can't blame the 'tenders tonight. Sloppy play and stupid giveaways were the sole reason for the loss tonight. Nick, Hank, Pav and Kris need to get the boys together and set everyone on the same path...it's time for them to sharpen up their play and start playing playoff calibre hockey starting immediately, or it will be a short playoff run and a long golf season this summer. No need for that to happen with the calibre of team they have in that locker room. Time to get focused.

3/7 GDT: Blue Jackets 8 at Red Wings 2
Yzersyukstromberg replied to Hockeytown0001's topic in General
Wings 5 Jackets 2 Scoring for the Wings: Datsyuk, Zetterberg (2), Kopecky, Cleary Scoring for the Jackets: who cares -
THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE!!!! If overtime games are worth 3 total points in the standings, then why aren't regulation games worth that much too????? If a team pulls out the win in regulation time, that should be worth more. With the system mentioned above, the standings wouldn't be so skewed because of OT games being worth a total of 3, and regulation games being worth only 2. It's too bad that Bettman is a blowhard who will never make it happen.

The trip to Grand Rapids, from the Detroit area, is actually only about 40 minutes shorter than to Toronto. And, you don't need a passport to cross the border in to Canada, only a driver's license (or suitable photo ID) along with your birth certificate or proof of citizenship. Just thought I'd let you know, in case you do decide to make the trip up there one day. I'll be going to GR for that game as well though...great time up there at Van Andel.
