Optimism After the Ugliest Game of the Year

Trust me, I understand completely how annoying it is when fans continually harp on the 'tending situation in Detroit. I'm not usually one of them...in fact, I'd consider myself to be on the same page as you in that regard. I mean, I'm not a hockey slappy or a fly-by-night fan by any means...I'm a season ticket holder, I go to every single home game, and never miss a road game, I play hockey 3 days a week even. There's no illusion for me when it comes to understanding the game of hockey. But even fans with the best grasp of the game and the nuances of it sometimes get flustered. That's where I was at last night. Just when I thought the door was opening for us to grab a couple points in the standings on San Jose, bam!, we get what we saw last night. For me, that equals frustration. Like you said, and I completely agree, goalies cannot be blamed for everything, and I don't pretend to do so. Last night was a collectively abominable effort. Forwards had no jump, the defense seemed to be a step behind, and unfortunately, the goalies were subjected to high quality chances, which they weren't able to corral. I totally get where you're coming from. The goalie debate is a hot topic for many, many fans. But I wouldn't write me off...most of what I have to say is very subjective and well thought out. Occasionally, just like anyone, I might look to the stats page or the box score to get 'answers' and that isn't always going to work....ie; last night. Long story short, I respect your opinion, and to be honest I agree with you. But I definitely wouldn't lump myself into that category of fans who don't 'understand'. I appreciate your seeing where I am coming from in regards to the personal remarks. I always try to make sure and keep things very straight forward on here, and never want to offend everyone, because, first, I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings or offend them, and second, because I realize that hockey fans aren't all going to have the same level of knowledge...but we're all hockey fans, and this board is all about sharing opinions and information. Either way, it's water under the bridge now. I apologize for taking such strong exception to your first retort. I definitely overreacted.

Optimism After the Ugliest Game of the Year

I understand where you're coming from, and you make a very good point. But I don't necessarily disagree with him (original poster)...I just didn't appreciate his wording. As for the goaltending, yes, the stats from tonight's game should just be thrown out, if that were possible. I am a stats guy, admittedly, but there's no mistaking some of the stats taken from the boxscore tonight. For example, Derek Meech and his -5 was pretty disturbing. That might just open the door for Brett Lebda to move back into the defensive top 6 now that he's apparently healthy. Back to your post...well stated, and true. It is a wash. Tonight's game was a rough one for all of the players. The only guy that held it together was Nick (and even Rafi for the most part). So, looking past the stats...yes, you really can't lay blame on a goalie (or goalies) when the 18 skaters in front of him just didn't have it together. So, I stand corrected.

Not at all... You can make your point in other ways than claiming I'm ignorant and a 'fanboy'. That's what I would call personal. If you didn't like my comment on the goaltending performance or the words I used to describe it, I'm OK with you disagreeing with me, but there's ways to go about it. You chose the personal approach...that's what I took exception to.

'Cliche fanboy remarks'??? Kiss my ass. As for my 'ignorance' on the matter of goaltending and hockey in general...where the hell do you get off sitting in front of your computer judging me and what I know about hockey? You can go f*** yourself and keep your ignorant, pointless remarks to yourself. My comments had nothing to do with you, so save it, *******. Who in the hell crowned you as the local authority on goaltending and hockey in general anyways? There's always a hero out there who has to go and make things personal....

Optimism After the Ugliest Game of the Year

What did I expect them to do??? I expected them to stop more than 15 of 23 shots on goal. Whether or not the team in front of them sucked, the goaltending duo stopped 65% of the shots on goal. That's pathetic. Those kind of stats would lose you your job in a Friday night beer league.

Optimism After the Ugliest Game of the Year

That game was an abomination from beginning to end. There's nothing positive to take from that game, except for the fact that it's over. Moving forward, I think it will re-raise concerns over our goaltending situation...they both sucked tonight, equally. On top of that, there wasn't really anyone (aside from maybe Lidstrom), who looked even a bit interested. We know the Wings are brutal on the second night of back-to-back games, so that's fine, but this is Nashville they played tonight...and losing 8-0 to Nashville is embarrassing and unacceptable. In the end, the Wings are still a good team...I'm confident they are professional enough to put this behind them and move on.

    Another reason why this organization...

That's exactly what you would expect a classy organization like the Red Wings to do. Good for them.

Who is the most improved Red Wing from last season?

I'm going to say Andreas Lilja. The guy has made significant improvements to his game since last season. Jiri Hudler would be a close second, but Lilja has done so many things so much better than he did last year, that it's tough to consider anyone else. I actually trust him on the D these days...and I couldn't even think of saying that last year.

Pavel Datsyuk = No Lady Byng For You!

Datsyuk will be a finalist for the Lady Byng again...he's added even more physical presence, without taking any more penalties. Classic gentlemanly player!

Chris Osgood breaks silence: 'I feel great'

Glad to hear that Ozzie took it for what it was supposed to be...a break. He used the time properly, apparently, and maybe it'll show in his game when he gets the start tomorrow night. I know that Ozzie is a good goalie, and I think now is the time for him to state his case for why he should have the starting job come playoff time. Conks has already stated his case...I'd like to see what Ozzie has coming down the stretch.

    Cleary's hit on Joe Thornton

It was a great hit by Dapper Dan, and I'm glad he came out with the physical play early on. If Joe T wants to turn his back and get boarded when he sees a train rolling down the tracks, that's his issue. Good play Danny boy.

    Leino

Agreed, Leino has been very impressive....but let's not get silly here. Canadian hockey players are still known for their unbelievable heart, and that's not likely a title that's going to be stolen by Finland any time soon.

    Howard re-assigned to GR

I watched the game, and I watch plenty of hockey....not just Red Wings games. Yes, the Wild played very well, but Jimmy Howard wasn't particularly good, at all. The first 2 Owen Nolan goals were soft, and there was one other soft goal (can't remember who scored it)...I appreciate your opinion, and agree that the Wild earned the victory, but Howard did nothing to earn himself a longer stay in Detroit. You get one chance, and when you get that chance, you can't go out and allow 4 goals on 28 shots.
  14. Yzersyukstromberg

    Howard re-assigned to GR

Uhhh, no. The plan was clear...10 days off for Ozzie, 1 start for Howard. That's done, and Howard didn't do anything whatsoever to convince Red Wings management that he deserves to stay up. Allowing 4 goals on 28 shots is no better than Ozzie has done this year, and of those 4 goals, 3 were brutally soft. Back to the AHL, Jimmy. Enjoy yourself...maybe next year.

Getting sick of "Ovie's" goal celebration's

How about this....who cares? The Wings play the Caps once a year. If he wants to celebrate his goals, let him. How does it affect us?? It doesn't. Plus, that guy is so good, he can celebrate his goals any way he wants to. Just like another poster said, not everyone is going to be an Yzerman, a Datsyuk or a Zetterberg and have minimal, modest goal celebrations. It's his choice...he's a young, energetic guy, and he loves hockey. I say good for him. I'd have no problem with him scoring like 60 goals and celebrating each and every one of them...especially if he was wearing a Red Wings jersey and taking a hometown discount salary of like $6 mil a year to do it. lol

    Ryan Miller injured

No Miller = No Playoffs for the Sabres. Lalime is just plain lousy these days, and Buffalo isn't going to go far without getting Miller back in the lineup.

Does Datsyuk have a shot at the scoring title?

Being behind by over 10 points, it'll be tough for him to catch up, unless Malkin and Crosby slow down considerably. But if anyone can get hot enough to catch up and make it interesting in a short period of time, it's Pavel Datsyuk. I say in the end, he'll finish 2nd. Malkin will hold on and win the title.

    last night's plus/minus

The only way your +/- is affected is even strength, or if a shorthanded goal is scored. Those on the ice for the offensive team on a shorthanded goal get a plus, those on the team who allowed the shorthanded goal receive a minus.

    Detroit Red Wings Open House

Yeah, like the last guy said...you better have been sure to have RSVP'd. If you didn't do that, the tickets aren't going to arrive at all. If you have RSVP'd and haven't received your tickets yet, there's a problem........get in touch with your Season Ticket Service Rep. She will figure out where they are, and correct the problem if there is one. You should have received your tickets a while ago if you responded to the email.

    Congratulations Kopy!

Good for Tomas (and his family!). All the best to them! It was nice to see him chip in a goal tonight too...maybe he's turning over a new leaf?? I know I'm probably dreaming in that regard, but what the hell. Kopy's a good guy, like him or not....tries his best, and is good to the fans, especially the kids. At the game the other night (Wed vs. Nashville) he gave my little boy his stick after warmups...absolutely made my little guy's night!!

Would Nik Antropov Fit In As A Wing?

NOOOOOOO!!!! Antropov is a lazy piece of sh*t. We don't need any of those.

    Detroit Red Wings Open House

I went on Tuesday to the Open House....great time! It's my second year now with season tickets. Went last year as well. They basically give 3 tickets per season ticket account, and it's up to the account holder to decide who gets/uses the tickets. All of the players on the team are there. They set up 'booths' with 3 players at each one, and you start off at the booth assigned to you on your ticket, get those 3 guys' autographs, then move on to the next line and wait your turn to get autographs there. I did really well last year, hitting up 6 of the 8 booths and bringing home 19 players' autographs, but this year, I tried to focus more on the players who I had the best items in hand that I wanted signed. You can bring anything you want to get signed... This year, I met and got autographs from Lilja, Datsyuk, Maltby, Stuart, Rafalski, Draper, Samuelsson, Zetterberg, Helm, Kronwall, Hossa, Kopecky...not bad. Got a lot of nice things signed. They also let you skate if you want to, and there are locker room tours (with extremely long lineups), plus they feed you hot dogs and pop. All in all, it's a good night, especially for those who are in to collecting autographs. There is another open house on Tuesday the 24th for the balance of the season ticket holders. Definitely one of the great perks of owning a season ticket plan.

    Big Montreal Scandal...

A friend of mine who works for the Red Wings has it on their facebook account. Apparently it came directly from the plane right before they got off and went to the hangar party at Metro Airport on the night of the Cup win this summer.

    Big Montreal Scandal...

Disappointing to say the least. Of well, made for good reading and speculating for the last while. Back to reality.

    Why does Kopecky...

    Funniest. Post. (Maybe) Ever.
