Almost every topic posted is forced to devolve into a whine fest about toughness thanks to GMR. He never misses a chance to whine. He must have a TON of time on his hands. Must be nice. As others have stated, I wouldn't take Franzen first round either, but I think if he stays healthy, he will put up really, really nice numbers.

Comparing a veteran with a huge trophy case to a prospect that has shown major consistency problems and is only in the NHL because the team is out of options doesn't really help your argument... These aren't knee jerk reactions. Howard has been in the mix for a while now. If fans don't have confidence in him, then it's a result of Howard's (lack of) actions. The only reason he is up is because the Wings are out of options with him. I, personally, don't think Howard is going to pull it off. I don't think he has the mental tools. On the upside though, as Drake pointed out, his presence should force the rest of the team to tighten up on D considerably. We'll be in good shape by the time Kenny picks up a journeyman back-up at the trade deadline.

The OP has no faith in Howard, apparently. Can't say I really blame him. Obviously Holland isn't going to run him out of town based on the preseason, but I think it's also fairly obvious that Howard is on a very short leash with the Wings brain trust. It may not be over now, but I don't think Holland and Co. are going to tolerate much.

I beg to differ. That's exactly what the whole preseason is about. Judging people. Not bashing him yet, but he's on thin ice.

Nice insight. Thanks. I tend to agree. Even though I have much less evidence to go by than you. In fact, I kind of hoped for Williams as soon as I realized he was available. If motivated, I think he is an upgrade over Sammy. We've got a few new players this season who have something to prove. Dan Cleary showed how dangerous a player like that can be. Now it's up to the Wings to help bring that out of them. Can't wait to see this season unfold.
