Might be a slight overpayment by a couple hundred thousand, but if you're the Rangers you definitely love this signing, because they need all the help they can get. That being said, the Rangers are almost entirely made up of talented players who underperform.

I'm not convinced he'd be better than Helm between Hudler and Cleary. Helm's speed gives him tons of potential as a setup guy, but definitely Abby is the more offensively capable. If Mo doesn't sign, it'll be interesting to see who gets that third line. I definitely want to see Abby take that next step this year (Helm too). They both showed flashes of awesomeness all season and during their playoff runs. With more ice time for either of these guys they are going to be scoring more. But to me, if Babs is expecting Hudler to put up 70 points this season, I just don't see him doing that with Abby, or Helm for that matter.

This. I have made the same comparison. Tampa has a great "core" too. So does Anaheim. Perry, Getzlaf, Ryan, Selanne, Niedermeyer, etc. is very comparable to Chicago's few remaining assets. Can name some other teams too. IMO, Chicago's "core" (buzz word) was average in the playoffs. They were good at times, bad at others, and alright most of the time. Toews was about the least deserving Smythe winner of all time, he had a mediocre first series and terrible final, and obviously Hossa was invisible. What's really going to be hilarious to see next year is when Chicago gets the inevitable injuries. I don't wish injuries upon anyone/team, but I mean in regards to seeing who the heck they are going to get to fill the spots. If the Hawks next year were to have the same kind of injuries WE had last year, how could they possibly fill those roster spots? OHL players? Not that I think this Chicago fan is going to return to this argument, but how on earth can you think that they are really ok? After 1.5 years of having an elite team they have slunk back to the middle of the pack (possibly worse ) I still think their goalie situation is in shambles. I don't care that Niemi has a cup, he is still an average goalie at best, with nearly 4GAA in the finals. We all said all year that their goaltending would cost them the cup, sure we wrong, but they won in spite of their goaltending, not because of it, and next year their tandem will be ONE of Niemi/Huet, along with Crawford or another cheap subsitute. So either way their goaltending situation promises to be WORSE than it was last year, and with a weaker defense and far less offensive production to lean back on.

We do not need another undersized forward, especially one with no potential to improve, and lots of potential to decline. I can understand the argument for Modano, because he would improve our team next year. I don't see how Kariya improves our team at all. He doesn't score nearly as much as some of you are suggesting he would. And as previously mentioned, he played for 6 mil last year, I highly doubt he signs with Detroit for 1-1.25mil.

Does that mean Helm and Abby aren't fully in it either? They've had offers out for longer than Modano and haven't given us a decision. What is with people making these assumptions when they actually have no clue what they are talking about? How do you know what his drive is? You don't. People keep acting like this is some way abnormal thing. Have any of you paid attention in years past during the off season? Tons of signings don't get done until later in the summer, and no, it has nothing to do with the player's drive or whether he wants to win, don't be ridiculous. Unless you've spoken to Modano himself, you have no idea what he wants or what he's thinking.

What is there to think about? Its an absurd trade on every single level. There is nothing "realistic" about it as you say. Sure we'd all love Sharp on our squad, so would a lot of teams. Not going to happen for the Wings. Theres a youtube vid of Wolski doing that same stickhandling thing during a practice but for much longer. I guess all those guys do that as a normal drill, still always fun to watch.
