Holland: "We don't need depth...Need a top guy"
Carman replied to unsaddleddonald's topic in General
Loui Eriksson would just be ideal. Great cap number, great two way player, automatic 25 goals 70+ points. Swedish. 27 years old. Get it done. -
The odds of Mrazek becoming better than Howard are low. Very low. What's an elite goalie? would top 5 in SV% and GAA be elite? Because if that's not elite then their isn't an NHL goalie that is elite.
-
I love Mrazek I really do. But Jimmy is here for the foreseeable future. Adding young big forward to our line up will make us a more effective team for the next 4-5 years, and Couturier has all the potential in the world to be a great player. I don't see the downside, we lose a blue chip goalie, for a blue chip forward. The difference is we actually have a good goalie that will be here for a while, while our forward depth looks pretty barren for bigger top 6 caliber prospects. Now unless you think Mrazek will step in next year if we let Howard go, I don't see how this deal doesn't look appealing.

This is by far his worst year, he's consistently put up +.35 PPG for his career. I tend to see things in the big picture rather then 35 game segments. -
And Couturier has the potential to be a star forward. The difference is Courturier actually has proven to be an NHL player by the age of 19.

Ok, look at Kronwall's game Sunday... One game doesn't mean a whole lot. White isn't great by any stretch, but he's proven to be a productive player in the past. He's just not settled yet this season for us. -
A better deal would be Mrazek and Ouellet for Courturier. They want goalie and defensive depth. I don't care if he's struggling his sophmore year, he's still extremely young and provides a good effort to go along with size. At the very least he's a direct upgrade over Abdelkader, at the very best he's a 6'2 franchise center that will spark our scoring wingers for years to come. I would absolutely love it.

The impressive part wasn't his production as much as it was his physical play, and taking people off their game. I mean a rookie played over 2;43 a game on the penalty kill, that's impressive in the playoffs. He was also 54% on faceoffs. It was the little things that were impressive to me. -

Derek Morris is just terrible in terms of athleticism. He never had much speed, but he's skating in quick sand now. Ian White takes way less penalties, gives the puck away much less. Ian White is having a pretty bad season, but Morris has been just as bad. Difference is Ian White is younger, and has just as good of track record. Morris also has had some injury issues. He by far has the worst +/- on his team. -
There is still time, come on Emmerton I believe in you! ...

Yeah, I wouldn't trade a 1st rounder either. But if the price was right he could really help us. -

Why not? He wouldn't immediately come in and be our 3rd best player. He is great in the corners, has good size. Would really help slow down our powerplay and help our top lines puck possession game. -
No, not really. there are many scouting sources that have Jarnkrok and among the elite prospects. Sure a casual NHL fan wouldn't know anyone on their team's prospects pool. But I'm refering to scouting services, and people that get paid to make these lists and that take interest into prospects would know a defenseman on the QMJHL all star team and 2nd round picks. Prospects don't pan out all the time, but that doesn't diminish their value. Fact is Ouellet and Jarnkrok's value is miles ahead of Berra, and Cundari just on just draft value alone, one is a 26 year old 4th round pick, another is a 20 year old undrafted 5'9 AHL player.

Just throwing names out there no problem. Yeah he's stuggling, but he has just over 100 nhl games, it's his sophmore season, it's pretty common to take a step back. Also Philly as a whole isn't playing too well. I mean he's 20 years old, he would likely still be in the AHL if we drafted him. He put up 27 points and 13 goals last year, and was awesome in the playoffs. Like he was really physical and very solid defensively it was really impressive. I mean he still has a ton of room to grow, but his ceiling is just awesome to me. His size would be really nice in our top 6 for years to come. I don't know if there is anyone of our prospects I would take over him, and I love Sproul. -
Don't mind that, as much as I wanted Bouwmeester, getting him for cheap because of his contract was important. I'm actually glad we decided not to overpay, Bouwmeester is not worth that first this year unless the team eats salary.

I want to trade for Sean Couturier. He's 20 years old, 6'3, good defensively already. He's stuggling this year, but the talent is there. It would take a lot to get him, but I don't see a reason we shouldn't. He's young, and signed for a few years on an RFA deal, and pretty cheap. I'd give up quite a bit of our prospects for him, because at the very least you have a capable big defensive center, but potentialy you have a franchise player. I don't know if he's actually available, but Philly might want to change things up, and his minutes have been dropping quickly,, he's playing less than Nyquist=p(actually he's played more lately, there was a stretch a few games ago of him playing 8-12 minutes, he's back up over 16 as of last game). STill his production is down. Interesting thought nonetheless. -
What do you mean? Look at this great lateral movement on the second goal. He abandoned that side of the ice with magnificent agility. http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/console?hlg=20122013,2,517&cmpid=embed-share-video Or on the first goal where he puts up a great fight in front of the net, but it's ok Jeremy Morin is one of the strongest powerforwards in the league I wouldn't expect our number 1 guy to be able to clear a puck, or control his stick. Or what about having the 2nd most minor penalties for defensemen in the entire league? It's ok, our number 1 guy doesn't need to be on the ice, he just wants to let other guys develop their penalty kill skills. We need a #1, Kronwall is not the answer.
-
Oh I agree, I was just correcting the poster on the value of prospects. Jarnkrok and Ouellet are outstanding compared to Reto Berra who is a 26 year old Swiss goaltender that well very likely never make the NHL, and Cundari who is an ok AHL point producing defenseman that is 5'9, his ceiling is Derek Meech. I mean come on, that return is just pitiful, and comparing Jarnkrok, and Ouellet to that? It's disturbingly inaccurate. On Jaybo, I actually wanted him, mainly because I don't think Holland will use that cap space up in the off season, but I'll give him the chance to improve this team in other ways before I hold this against him.
-
Umm no. Jarnkrok and ouellet are young outstanding prospects. The guys the blues traded would be equivalent to Ben Marshall and the goalie we just signed the other week out of college that I can't rememeber the name of.
-
They've said that for several years now, and we still have cap space.
-
i'll give Kenny the summer to spend the cap space, but if we go into yet another year without using all the cap I'll look at this move right here and hold it against him.
-
Sarcasm is hard to deliver my bad haha Kronwall has been really disappointing for me, but yea he's better than Kindl no doubt. I do think Kindl has been impressive though
-
You aren't serious are you? Kindl has been one of our better defenseman. Had a bad game tonight, but he's miles ahead of Smith and Kronwall defensively.
-
Yeah Smith has just been brutal. There is no way to sugar coat it. Needs to stop trying to learn from Kronwall.
