Red Wings prepare for life w/o Hossa

http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/20...r_life_wit.html Red Wings prepare for life without Marian Hossa by Ansar Khan Wednesday July 01, 2009, 12:05 AM DETROIT -- As NHL free agency opens at noon Wednesday, the Detroit Red Wings are preparing for life without star forward Marian Hossa. The club made Hossa a non-negotiable offer of a long-term deal worth $4 million a season. General manager Ken Holland said Tuesday evening that he hadn't spoken to Hossa's agent Ritch Winter. "I'm not planning he's going to be here,'' Holland said. "I'm not expecting that call (from his agent). Would I like that call? Yes. I'm assuming they want to explore all their options. "I'm not optimistic. I'm assuming on the open market he's going to get significant offers.'' Holland said if Hossa, who earned $7.45 million this past season, were to stay in Detroit, it would be at a "bargain-basement price'' because the Red Wings are roughly $3 million under the $56.8 million salary cap. "They know where we're at,'' Holland said. "Would I be prepared to move a player or two to make some space? Maybe. But they have bigger hopes.'' Winter did not respond to phone messages. Hossa led the Red Wings with 40 goals during the regular season but struggled in the playoffs, with six goals and nine assists in 23 games, including no goals and three assists in the seven-game Stanley Cup final against the Pittsburgh Penguins, the team he left to sign with Detroit last summer. Hossa, 30, is one of the premier free agents who apparently will hit the open market today, perhaps attracting offers of $6 million a season or more. Los Angeles, Minnesota, Montreal, the New York Rangers and Vancouver, if it fails to re-sign twins Daniel and Henrik Sedin, are among the clubs rumored to have an interest in Hossa. Samuelsson, Hudler talks Holland made an offer to right wing Mikael Samuelsson, believed to be a slight increase from last season's $1.2 million salary. But Samuelsson is expected to explore the market and probably won't return. "They got bigger aspirations than what I got (to offer),'' Holland said. "We'll talk one more time before noon (today).'' Samuelsson's agent, Rick Komarow echoed those sentiments. "There's always a chance, but it's most likely he'll hit the market,'' Komarow said. "The issue is trying to find the right number for everybody. We're not there yet, and I'm not sure we'll get there. "Sammy loves Detroit. It's been a great run.'' Without Hossa and Samuelsson, Holland will have a small amount of cap space to shop for a free agent, but he also has to leave some money for forward Jiri Hudler, a restricted free agent who is due a significant raise from his $1.15 million salary after posting career-high totals in goals (23) and points (57). "We'll work the phones, got a little bit of (cap) space, but probably not going to be overly active,'' Holland said. "We'll explore the market for depth players, support players. The core of the team is in place.'' Holland has spoken to Hudler's agent, Petr Svoboda, exchanging numbers and discussing comparable players should he file for arbitration by Sunday's deadline. "I can't go spend the money we have set aside for Hudler,'' Holland said. He added, "(Svoboda) told me the area he thinks they're in. We see things a little differently, but I can't say we're dramatically apart. I got an idea of what it'll take to sign Hudler.'' Holland said he's informed the agents for forwards Darren McCarty and Aaron Downey that they won't be offered contracts for now, but he will stay in touch. Winter told the Red Wings last weekend that another one of his clients, unrestricted free-agent forward Tomas Kopecky, will explore the market. He is likely to sign elsewhere.

Red Wings prepare for life w/o Hossa

Wow......you are too cool. Jonas brothers huh??? Really...I just can't see Huds as a dumb ass pop-star singer with chasity ring wearing lover boy with the woman he has on his arm........ So people that like St. Louis, do they remind you of your daughters too.....or how about any other hockey player under the height of 5'11....are you saying that just because a person likes a player that is "small" it's cute...... MAYBE just MAYBE some people like the fact that the Wings have players that can actually play the game with out having a bunch of......... "mean-tough-ass-WWE/UFC-slow ass" skaters that all they can do is hand out cheap shots to those "little guys" and then have people say that the "little guys" shouldn't play, they're too small, they can't take a hit......our big guys have skill and speed as well as the ability to win games WITHOUT being hard ass grinders..... But if you think it's "cute" and just plain "adorable" that people like Hudler (like I don't know who you were talking to) then that's fine. But so you know, Im not exactly a "pop-rock" fan and if you're daughters are my age, I hope they aren't swooning over the Jonas Brothers...... It's not the "image" I admire, it's his ability to play the F'N game, get knocked the F out, come back and play, not puck-hog, score goals, play on the PP, not get stupid penalties, and pay attention to who's on the line with him and know who to get the puck to for the goal and make the damn plays.....and I guess if he's putting up 57 points with his size...then I guess that is "cute" so you say! I call it amazing, not many out there his size can do that!...and so I guess you're right I do admire a "small" guy out there playing in the NHL with the Red Wings that is their #6 forward.....isn't that just too cute??!?!?!

Red Wings prepare for life w/o Hossa

Wow--some of you are just incredible immature morons...I'm sorry, just because someone posts a thread, some people agree with keeping a player.....and all the sudden "let's just make fun of Hudler lover's"..... LET ME RESTATE THAT I NEVER SAID THAT IT WOULD BE EASY TO GIVE HUDLER $3MIL- I STATED THAT (IMO) IT WOULD BE EASY TO KEEP HIM BECAUSE I BELIEVE THAT HE WOULD RATHER TAKE A CONTRACT WITH THE WINGS FOR LESS THEN RATHER GOING ELSEWHERE FOR ONLY $2/$2.5 Is it wrong for fans to have their own favorite players?? Is it wrong for fans to want their fav player to stay with their fav team?? How did this become a thread from stating an MLive report instead of sportsnet statment about the team and Hossa possibly not re-signing into a Hudler bashing thread?? I thought the immaturity if bashing players was over after game 7 of the SCF and everyone got their "angry didn't show up players statements" out of the way... Just because some of us out there like Huds and think that he will take LESS to stay, doesn't mean that you have to label us and be mean ass pricks....(wishing I could replace the pr w/ a D) I didn't see ONE PERSON on this thread or any others stating that Holland should offer Hudler $2.5 or $3mil but simply stating that he could make that elsewhere....but MOST comments about Huds is having the same if not just a little more pay saying between $1.5/$1.8...that's not an unreasonalble amount, especially if Hossa-Sammy-Kopecky are leaving & it's not that far fetched that the Wings could offer a 3-5 year deal that doesn't give him a raise at all this year and then give a bump w/ the remaining contract years. Giving Hossa $7.45 was entire too much and it screwed the pay cap....plain & simple....and for what 40 goals--when they needed him to produce, he didn't.....but Hudler had a career high year, at the age of 25...give the guy a little credit...it's not like he didn't play and that he sucks....57 points. I'm not comparing the two at all. Obviously I am smart enough to know that these are two very different players....with almost 5 years between them.....Hossa only had 3 more points in the playoffs then Huds but I guess since I'm not comparing......................... .....it's not like Hossa was the heart of the team. He played ONE year (if that...when did we actually sign him) with the Wings. He wasn't the #1 player for the Wings, in fact Dats & Z were...and those guys are locked in! Can people not be civil adults on here? Make your point, have conversations with people stressing why you think the way you do and leave it at that.....debates are fine and fun, but there is no need to get nasty....people like that kinda remind me of a Pens player I've heard of........... You can call me a "Hudler-lover" all you want though....I'm proud of sticking by a player I support!

Red Wings prepare for life w/o Hossa

Show me in WRITING where it says Hudler want's $3 MIL....there have been threads with people stating he is worth it....but as to the Hossa wanting more than $4M...(since he made over $7M) and Hudler only making $1.15 where does the HAVE TO HAVE $3M come in......I must of missed that article. Obviously since I've read all the articles that came out today NO I don't think Holland will offer $3M since that's all that's about left....Im not a moron, I know how to count! The Wings only have NINE signed forwards.....we still need three....right??? A bit apart ......a hell of a lot better than "Im not optimistic, he's going to test the market, so on and so forth..." Oh and to the "let's give Hudler 90% of the cap" guy.....we're not dumb.....obviously that can't happen. Just because people are pulling for Huds, since Hossa-Sammy- Cheli-Downey-McCarty-Kopceky-Conklin (if that happens) are all gone...why is it so far fetched that we would pull for our #6 forward to stay????

Red Wings prepare for life w/o Hossa

Huh? Wouldn't it be easy to SAVE Hudler...... To Keep Hossa, they would have to get rid of everyone that is "testing the free-market" and still there wouldn't be any money to give to anyone else....it just doesn't fit the equation. I have a sneaky feeling that Sammy thinks he is a better player than what he is and is being greedy wanting a 1st line position for over $3 MIL, where as I believe Hudler knows what he has w/ Detroit and will keep the talks going until the very last possible moment.....taking a possible 3-5 yr deal with this year being a slight raise, and then going up a little every year..... But I don't know much, just my opinion!

Report: Hossa turns down Wings' offer

Here's the one from http://www.sportingnews.com/nhl/article/20...s-10-year-offer Report: Hossa rejects Red Wings' 10-year offer Sporting News staff reports Comments (0)More Login or register to post commentsPrinter-friendly versionTuesday, Jun. 30, 2009 - 11:06 p.m. ET Marian Hossa has turned down a 10-year deal with the Detroit Red Wings, according to the Canadian media outlet Sportsnet.ca. That means Hossa will be an unrestricted free agent beginning at noon Wednesday -- and likely the most coveted player on the market. The deal-breaker, according to Sportsnet, was proposal's average salary -- reportedly between $3.75 million and $4 million per season. Hossa's one-year deal this season paid him $7.45 million. For it, he delivered 40 goals and 31 assists in 76 games. He left the Pittsburgh Penguins last year after the Stanley Cup finals to join the Red Wings in hope of winning an NHL title -- only to see the Wings lose to the Penguins in seven games in the finals. ...so they're really just saying what sportsnet.ca said......still nothing on mlive or twitter or anywhere else I can find

Share Associated Press DETROIT -- The Detroit Red Wings general manager says the team won't be a big player when free agency opens on Wednesday. GM Ken Holland said Tuesday the Red Wings did most of their shopping during the season by extending the contracts of center Henrik Zetterberg and right winger Johan Franzen. Report: Hossa turns down Wings' offer

http://blog.mlive.com/snapshots/2009/06/ge...he_red_win.html Getting cynical as the Red Wings free agent previews/rumors roll in Posted by George James Malik June 30, 2009 19:12PM As we stand about seventeen hours from the start of the unrestricted free agent period, my best educated guess suggests that Marian Hossa will sign somewhere else between 12 and 2 PM tomorrow, with Mikael Samuelsson and Ty Conklin soon to follow, Tomas Kopecky to last until July 3rd at the latest, and I expect someone to toss a $2.5 million offer sheet at Jiri Hudler before the week's out. I would like to think that the Wings can bid on somebody like Samuel Pahlsson (who Mark Spector reports is still talking to Chicago or John Madden as they'll probably react by looking to bolster their forward ranks for the sake of giving Justin Abdelkader more time in Grand Rapids, but I think those players will earn salaries higher than the Wings can offer them...And if you think that Chris Neil or Ian Laperriere serve as a viable "scrapper" option, TSN reports that he turned down a multi-year deal with a cap hit of $1.7 million, so don't expect either player to come cheaply. With that, let's take a look at the various Tuesday afternoon free agent previews. ESPN's EJ Hradek spoke to Sportscenter about Marian Hossa, stating that Ken Holland remains "not optimistic" about signing Hossa, and that he's probably headed to Los Angeles, in a 5:46 video (check the 4:28 remaining mark)...

That is why I didn't put his pay...I was comparing the two others, throwing in that Leino will be signed, for not a whole lotta money. You are right........not laughable IMO, but if people are going to dis on players that don't score in 7 games....then why the hell not put him in there?! What I don't understand, is why would anyone say they are going to be sad to see Hossa go? We had him for ONE YEAR...he didn't produce as well as he was expected for over $7 mil and the Wing's have won cups in the past without him....sooooo...is it really that big of deal??? Just helps to KEEP some of the depth as others say!

Red Wings Lineup of The Future

Really Fils on the 1st line?? And does Holmstrom have a brother on the Wings I didn't know about? My only dream is to see Huds on at least the 2nd line and add a grinder to the 4th (Neil perhaps?)
  22. HudlerFanatic

GM: Wings did shopping during season......

That just may be the opposite, if they don't sign Hossa, and Sammy, Cheli...Kopceky doesn't come back, no Conklin is gone and a defensivemen later...there will be some change. (yes, im still hopeful for Huds.....)....They brought in change.....Hossa....and that didn't work for the Cup...you can't count on players....you want to...but there are good days, bad days, injuries....the Wings know what they're doing. I think that if they could sign Huds for a 3yr contract for $1.5 1st yr-$2 2nd yr-$2.5 3rd yr...it will still give them some wiggle room for this year. Besides, what good is it to trade Huds if we don't get a draft pick til the NEXT year.....?????? With the way it's looking now...they couldn't even sign Hossa for 4mil cap.....taking this quote from MLive ".............But they don't have much money to spend. They have 19 players signed -- including nine forwards -- for roughly $53.5 million. The salary cap for 2009-10 is $56.8 million. That leaves about $3 million to spend on three forwards. Hossa alone would cost them between $4 million and $4.5 million a year -- if he accepts their take-it-or-leave-it offer of a long-term deal............" http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/20...nswer_from.html I just can't believe Hossa hasn't said anything yet....unless he has, and the Wings just aren't letting it be known......
