Official: Wings vs Blackhawks in Winter Classic
Yzerfan1999 replied to NEpats1028's topic in General
I don't mind them all that much, but I think it would be neat to see both teams wear the old fashioned style wool jerseys. That may be pushing it by todays technological standards in equipment, but the wool would look pretty classic. Heck, while we are at it, they should all use wood sticks! hah -
Nice. Wings vs. Sens on a Saturday night! First HNIC of the year! Can't wait!
-
That was a scary time. I don't even want to imagine what position the Wings would be in today if that happened...
-
He was quickly brushed aside after leaving in 2003. But I am sorry for spelling it wrong, did not need to offend. I'll admit I have a bias against the guy - not for leaving in 2003, I couldn't have cared less when that happened. I always thought it he was below Yzerman, Shanahan, and Lidstrom on the importance pillar. He had so much natural talent, but it always seemed to me like he took nights off. He didn't have as much passion for the game as Yzerman or Shanahan. If he did, he would have been a much better player for a lot longer.

Shows my attention to detail. My bad!

I seem to remember that too.... but maybe we are both crazy.

If we lose in the Finals, is '08-'09 season a failure?
Yzerfan1999 replied to SFwingsfan's topic in General
Yes. It will be a failure. If we had not won last year it would have been a failure too. Thats the only downside to signing big names like Hossa. Now we are expected to win. I kind of liked our position last summer. WE knew the Wings had what it took to win a cup, but most of the media went with teams like San Jose, Anahiem or Ottawa to win. Surely the media will be calling for a repeat in the fall. -
I assume you meant Federov might not be, but Lidstrom certainly is? Like I said earlier, I acknowledge that an argument can be made for Lids being the best Wing over the last 15 years, and I think its close between the two, but I can't put Lids above Yzerman simply because of his Steve's heart, soul AND ability, combined with the fact that he captained the Wings to three cups, as opposed to Lidstrom having 1 with the 'C' thus far. Don't forget, Yzerman won the Conn Smythe in 98 and led the Wings in playoff scoring in 2002, when Lids won it. Of course that could all change, but I think before this season, it was a lot harder to make the argument that Lids has been a better Wing then Yzerman for the last 15 years. This cup brings them closer, but IMO Yzerman still holds the spot as #1. Call it sentimental, but I feel like overall, Yzerman was more of a fan favourite as well. Its hard not to think of the Detroit Red Wings of the last 15-20 years an not think of Steve Yzerman first and foremost.

Not a bad list...not bad at all. Even though mine differs, I would not contest that list all that much.
-
Naw, I seriously considered putting him in there at 10. After all, he was around for more cups then Hasek.
-
Hahaha, if anything is racist about this article, its this. Mike Toth is a tool, that is why he works for Sportsnet, the station which always plays second fiddle to TSN. Seriously, those guys employ Nik Kypreos for gods sake.

Wow, the Lidstrom era has officially come to Detroit. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Lidstrom - and based on production and personal success, yes Lids is #1 - But heart, tenacity and pure desire was a part of Yzerman's game that was far superior to Nicks, IMO. Lidstrom plays with his head and has tremendous skill, but Yzerman desire combined with skill was unparalleled. Until Lids CAPTAINS this team to two more cups, Yzerman is still the #1 for me. But everyone is entitled to their own opinions. I just think this recent cup has impacted a lot of these decisions...but then again, why shouldn't it? And please, give me a break - Federov is not above Yzerman on this list. 1. Yzerman 2. Lidstrom 3. Shanahan 4. Federov 5. Draper 6. Osgood 7. Datsyuk 8. Zetterberg 9. Holmstrom 10. Hasek P.S. I threw Hasek in there out of respect. He played very well in last years playoffs, and was good enough to win in 2002..but I am not sure if that really warrents a spot here. Maltby or even a guy like Larionov could easily replace him.

Paul Ysebaert Ray Sheppard Dino Ciccarelli similar to dantroit's selections. I always liked those three guys a lot.

SWEET. I wonder if the Wings and Blackhawks will wear retro jerseys? That seems to be the custom from last year and in Edmonton several years ago. I would love to see a version of the red and white striped DETROIT jersey and an older looking 'Hawks jersey come out. I'd definitely buy one of those. Those would look pretty sweet........ -
I think you missed the Bruins. Just slide them in the lower middle there somewhere.
-
Cool. I entered to win the jersey...

I am putting my money on Turris.

Ah, good old Arron Asham - the man people were up in arms about after Holland didn't sign him last season. Damn, we sure could have used him last year. Anyways, good fit for the Flyers.
-
Hmm... Bertuzzi and Iginla could be good together. But then again, Iginla is the hard working, gritty type of player - traits that Bertuzzi has completely lost in the last 4 years. He will be trying to reproduce Nolans 'return to form'. I predict a clash of personalities, and complete and utter failure by Bertuzzi.

Anyone think that the Wings should go after this guy? I understand he will command a huge salary, (7-8mil?) but with a back end loaded contract it might just be worth it. Giving him Rafalski like money in the first two years, then 7 for another two? Lidstrom will be gone in 2 years, and Campbell is a great pairing for Kronwall. Could the Wings let Stuart walk and sign Campbell? I know a lot of people are calling for a forward, but our top two lines look to be pretty potent anyways with the emergence of Franzen, Cleary, and Filpulla. Our D would be unbeatable if we added Brian Campbell. Just a thought....not really a rumour. Sorry.
-
Cleary is not going anywhere. Call me crazy, but I would rather keep Cleary and Franzen long term then Hossa...but lets not get ahead of ourselves cause I doubt that will happen. It will be interesting to see what happens after this year. I bet if the Wings win and Hossa gets his cup, he goes on the market and cashes in on the huge contracts he passed up this year. Heck even if they don't win he might do that. This whole 1 year deal thing makes me think he is taking one shot at glory, after which he goes after the money bags. In a year, Flip will be better and maybe even Ville Leino turns into another top 6 fwd. The need for Hossa AFTER this year may be gone. After all, we didn't need him last year - did we? Point is, I don't think we should expect Hossa to stay in Detroit after next year, but lets enjoy having him now and knowing that we have a glorious chance at repeating as cup champs. No doubt in my mind Holland will keep the Zetterberg over Hossa by the time next summer roles around.
-
Where does that leave the Wings with contract extensions for Zetterberg and Filpulla? According to nhlnumbers our cap hit before signing Hossa is 45.273, adding his contract at 7.4 brings us up close to 53 million, 3 million under the cap, right? Don't tell me Holland is going to wait till next summer to try and keep Zetterberg...that sounds foolish, doesn't it? So whats the deal? edit sp

With not a lot of cap space left, Filpulla should be the next goal on Hollands check list. I bet Drake retires, and D-Mac and Downey can be signed for the league minimum sometime later in July. No rush on those guys, IMO.
