I think you are right about the pride thing. The Russians are taking this really really seriously, and they should. But more talent? No way. They have some scary snipers - but overall, when the Russians are carrying guys like Grebeshkov, Victor Kozlov, a 40 year old Sergei Fedorov, Tyutin, and Afinigenov, you can't say they have more talent overall than Canada. Those guys wouldn't make Canada's 3rd team. Except for Grebeshkov, these guys had a hard time finding jobs in the NHL this past season. Nevertheless, it comes down to how they play as a team - like the US has shown.

Seriously? What the f*** are you watching? Sure, Rafalski's cap hit is high, but look at every defenseman in the league's salary with his pedigree. Its what you pay for a defenseman of his caliber. The only thing him and Lebda have in common is size, and Rafi doesn't let it bring down his game. He's smart with the puck, has a great shot, and great outlet pass. Besides, if he complements Lids the way he does, that's half worth it right there. Rafalski is the second best defensman on the team. No cup in 08 and no finals last year without the guy.

I love the "keep your head up" comment. He was face to face with the goalie trying to score a goal. How many players in the league would look behind them when the only player left to beat is the goalie? And please, stop referring to this as a "clean hit". It was shoulder to head - he may have grazed his shoulder momentarily, but the guy wouldn't have been knocked out before he hit the ice if it was a solid shoulder to shoulder check. God yeah, I saw that on the replay of the first goal after noticing he got up kind of slowly. Same knee as the Staal and initial Laraque incident too. When I saw it, I couldn't believe it. Bad luck to have that knee go the wrong way in back to back games.

My favourite Phaneuf moment.

It started at the beginning of last year actually. He had three solid years and the Flames and everyone else thought it was time he stepped up his play and actually became an elite defenseman, but from the start of last year his defensive game has started to drop. Bad turnovers, missed coverage, etc. To me he just doesn't play with the intensity he did in his rookie and sophomore year. He still delivers the big hits, but I couldnt count on my hands how many times he has backed away from fights in the past two seasons. He almost seems like he couldnt be bothered anymore. Yzerman not picking him on Team Canada was a result of him playing poorly. Not the other way around. Edit: T. Low, you are right about him being a slow thinker. I think part of his poor play stems from just not being too smart. I live in Edmonton, and went to High School with many of his Jr. High friends. By this time he was off in Red Deer playing Jr., but he would often attend party's on the weekend back in Edmonton, and he was the kind of guy who looked for fights with everyone. Not the sharpest pencil in the box, but the guy has some great natural talent. Great skater and has a nice shot too. He will be an asset for the Leafs, but I think people were expecting him to kind of be the next Pronger. Not gonna do that...

Its apparent from the last two games the Wings and Kings have played, that Los Angeles is a better hockey team than Detroit. What a piss poor effort by Detroit. It doesn't matter if you string together 3 or 4 good games (especially when you manage to lose them) when you lay a ******* stinker in a game that really really means something in the standings. Awful, just god awful. Lebda and Ericsson where dominated every time they were on the ice, and Bertuzzi, Zetterberg, and Datsyuk played like bums. The only player that looked good tonight was Filppula, and besides him it looked like 11 other third liners out there. If the Wings can't string together some decent hockey for ONCE this season right away, this team has no chance of making the playoffs, which is inexcusable seeing as Phoenix, Colorado, and Nashville are all able to stay in the top 8 consistently. The injury excuse is old - tonight they lost because 95% of the team dogged it. One or two players wouldn't have changed it.

Take a look at his stats compared to Bergeron and Morrow's St. Louis GP G A PTS +/- 50 14 32 55 -6 Bergeron GP G A PTS 43 12 20 32 3 Morrow GP G A PTS 50 10 20 30 -4 Not to mention St. Louis has 32 points in 30 international games for Team Canada. More games and more points with a higher points per game average than Bergeron or Morrow.... So what do you think? Size/toughness issue? Seems to me St. Louis has done fine at every international competition and at the NHL level despite his size. I don't normally question my man Steve, but did Kevin Lowe f*** with his mind on this one or what?
