OK Lemieux who some still argue greatest player ever and definitely the best of any player on either team. Jagr a phenom. Paull Coffee and Murphy Hall of Famers(Murphy was shadow of himself in 97) Ron Francis- Tochet could score and kick anyone's ass. Kevin Stevens. Guys I'm sorry but to say this wouldn't even be close seems ludicrous to me. Russian 5- I don't care if it was the Russian 20- that 92 team was phenomenal.
-
When you think about it's quite interesting- Wings have 4 Cups since 1990- Pens have 3- if Pens win another one they are dead even as far as post Oiler domination is concerned.
-
Not so sure about that- Penguins had incredible firepower- Lemieux in his prime, Jagr breakout season, Stevens, Tochhet, Ron Francis(one of most underrated players in NHL history) Paul Coffee, a much younger Larry Murphy. Have to go with 92 Pens upon reflection.

97 Wings vs 92 Pens would have been an incredible matchup.

No offense but when I read this thread I sense a lot of anger from some of the Red wings fans posting in this thread.

50 bucks for $2500- I'll take those odds in a heartbeat.

Longshot but is it possible Penguins could match what Oilers

Datsyuk is better than Ovechkin if you are talking in terms of an all around player you can build a team around. No doubt in my mind about that. If you want the best cherrypicker in the league I'd take Ovechkin- not saying he's not a great player but I would take Datsyuk over him any day of the week. -
I'd give you 3:1 odds that neither Washington nor Chicago are in the finals next year. Expect Detroit and Pittsburgh again in a rubber match.
-
Who is mad? A bit of a generalization I suspect. Like any fanbase Pittsburgh has its share of jerks but most people I know have nothing but respect for Wings. By my estimation Wings are one of classiest franchises in any major sport and I harbor no resentment towards Detroit. Nor did I last year.

I strongly disagree that Ovechkin is best forward in NHL and quite frankly am skeptical that he'll ever lead his team to a Cup. -
http://wwweyesontheprize.blogspot.com/2008...cky-pierre.html I am a little too young to remember much of the Canadiens dynasty- I was a young child and saw the tail end in the late 70's. Anyway, you don't have to be a Canadien fan to find this discussion interesting on a lot of players who were drafted or not drafted by various teams in the 70's and what their perceived shortcomings or strengths were and how history would reflect on these evaluations.

Interesting. Please explain what you mean. -

Not at all- what interested me in the article was seeing other guys who were highly touted in same draft class as Mike Bossy. -
Shame- kind of seems to be forgotten to a certain extent as the years go by... Do you guys think hockey was more enjoyable to watch in late 70s early 80s or now?

Do you really think Boston can play with the Pens- in the playoffs? Regular season maybe- playoffs I sort of doubt it. Caps will be more of a challenge and call me crazy but I'd take Malkin over Ovechking any day of the week and twice on Tuesday. -

If Pens win cup next 3 years you might have to reevaluate tbh. If Sid was a Wing you guys would love him- same with Malkin. Just as I would gladly take Zet or Dats. Honestly think about some of the names that roll off your tongue in this matchup. Zetterberg, Dats, Fraznen , Lidstron- Crosby,Malkin, Staal, Gonchar. Epic series. -
As a Pens fan I remember Bossy and Trio Grande making our lives miserable many evenings.

I know the conventional story but didn't get to watch as much hockey as I usually do in 2006, 2007. Seriously, how did both these teams go to being one of the most dominant teams in the league to ordinary at best in such a hurry? Thanks in advance.

Thanks guys- appreciate the insight.

Why ask the question here as opposed to Pens forum? Because I know I'll get a more objective and thougtful response as opposed to a biased response from the majoirty of Pens fans. And for some of the earlier posts in this thread I had no intention of rubbing salt in wounds. I know it was a hard fought series and I basically see Penguins/Redwings as same as Cowboys/49ers of early 90s in the sense each year you never knew which team was going to take it as the teams were that closely matched. I don't think it is out of real of possibility that either Wings or Pens could each win the Cup in 2010 and 2011 which would mean either 3 in a row for Pens or 3 out of 4 for Wings barring any major changes to either team. -

Point taken but did any of them have a core this young? Crosby, Malkin, and Staal are barely old enough to drink. Staall is only 20 -
Enjoyed the discussion the past week fellas. Great board. Wings or Penguins fan you have to admit China Jack is a comic character. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3x8MTGzCl94...feature=channel

You have to realizethe drive of someone like Sydney Crosby. Throw the home ice out the window- the fact the Penguins have not won in Detroit yet just makes me more confident they will on Friday- law of averages fellas. And I have to tell you- life is sort of like the stock market- when conventional wisdom is so certain of a particular outcome you can almost bet the opposite is going to happen. I was listening to a talkshow the other day and Clark Gillies and some others were guests essentially saying Detroit was a lock to win it. LOL, this is the plot twist I was telling you about. It's just not in the cards for Detroit this year- a 1 game season to win the Cup!! Are you kidding me!? So much for Pens not being able to win with Dats in the lineup. Bottom line- Crosby wants this thing more than Zetterberg or anyone on Detroit. Sid is coming to Detroit and he's bringing hell with him!!

And trust me I want to but I just can't. It's bizarre, as a Steeler fan I DESPISE the Patriots- I literally root for them to lose every week. Same with Browns. In hockey the Flyers and Capitals make me want to throw up. Now the Wings, obviously I want them to lose but can't bring myself to the point of irrational hatred. Must be a sign it is a class organization, classy fans as well for the most part.

Wings may just be my 2nd favorite team.
