    Ryan Sproul

10 goals second half of the season only second to Ryan Ellis with 12 in the OHL. He didnt even play OHL hockey last year and has grown 4 inches in the last year which kind of explains why he is so weak for his body. He has great wheels for a big man, a booming shot and I'm sure once he fills out he'll learn to use that frame a bit. Sounds like the wings may have picked up a Brent Burns in the second round. He seems kind of like Callahan in a sense that as soon as he made it to the major juniors he just took off on a rapid development pace. If he continues his second half from last year, count on this guy playing on the world jnuior team
  2. because it all adds up. Carcillo is a huge blip on the radar but combined with O'Donnell, Montador, and Mayers the Hawks all of a suddn became a pretty damn tough team that is going to be very physical against our top guys and probably not gonna be afraid of being all over Howard. Jeremy Morin is probably gonna be up full time and he also plays that type of game and John Scott will be in and out of the lineup still. Chicago got pretty damn tough all of a sudden and at least now Commodore can help defend against that. Abdelkader wont be all alone which will help him play tougher too since someone is backing him up
  3. Wings are gonna have their hands full this year playing Chicago. Adding Carcillo, Montador (specifically Carcillo) just made that team a lot more a ***** to play against. Commodore can at least handle guys like Carcillo pretty well and toughens up their back end. This should help keep carcillo out of Howards face. Im willing to bet money Carcillo and Commodore will fight next year.
  4. Hmm with white and Commy signed it makes you wonder if one of Kindl or Smith is a potential trade piece for a guy like Yandle. Commodore is the perfect number 6/7 guy, especially to show Ericcson how to use his size. White is no ***** either. If the wings can land a bigger offensive guy in a trade it will be a great sett up. It is decent as of right now. The D got tougher for sure, White doesnt really take crap from anyone either, hes not on Commodores level but still can throw a check and play feisty. Hopefully adding some Canadian blood to the backend will help Ericcson toughen up a bit, and guys like Abby will play tougher too knowing theres a 6'5 mean Canadian back there backing him up

    Yandle on the block?

People gotta realize that he isnt signed to a contract at all either. That will lower his value for sure, unlike the Burns trade where Burns is locked into a contract with a very low cap hit for the next season.
  6. Over a guy who couldnt crack the NHL with Edmonton. Everyone forgets how good Commy was with Carolina in the playoffs, he got a big pay day from Columbus for that reason. He is big, plays physical, will fight and clear the crease. He is a great signing as a guy to rotate in and out with Smith and Kindl. He was bad with Columbus but so is pretty much anyone not named Rick Nash, give the guy a chance before deciding its horrible because he went into the wings bench once. People will forget all about it when hes out there and noone is digging at Howard without getting put on their ass

2011 NHL Draft: Rounds 2-7 Discussion

A top 4 role on a championship team? Hes played a total of 33 games in the KHL the last 2 years and has 2 points. I know he is a great prospect and hes one of my favourite picks from this draft but come on man? 2 points in the KHL doesnt scream top 4 to me. Are you saying that right now you wouldnt trade Marchenko for Larsson or Hamilton because that seems nuts to me

Ya if these 2 were to play in major junior they would be running kids their age over all the time but hitting 23 or 24 year olds is alittle tougher. Maybe playing physical against more developed players and the workout routines they are given will help their physical games in the long run. I just hope neither of them stay very long, it seems tougher to develop an offensive game for more borderline prospects in the NCAA. I wonder what will happen with Cayer actually. He has shown 0 offense at Clarkson really but is one of the best skating prospects, is 6'4 and plays a crash and bang style of play wreaking havoc on other teams defenses. May get a contract just to help deal with the physical game in GR for the more high profile prospects. I wonder if he could be a good 4th liner in the NHL even though he doesnt score a tonne Ya if these 2 were to play in major junior they would be running kids their age over all the time but hitting 23 or 24 year olds is alittle tougher. 2011 NHL Draft: Rounds 2-7 Discussion

Umm? I hope you were joking when you said that or had a typo of some kind. I love the wings but lets not get to homerish here. I feel like a 4 year old could make an argument that Larsson or Hamilton for example are better defenders than Marchenko. I know this board is for wings fans and everything but sometimes things get a little too homerish around here. Yeah that was a HUGE pickup in the 7th round and he could be a player, but he was still a 7th round pick and has plenty of question marks around him

I like that Hudon pick but going to an Ivy league school is a little odd for a player that compares himself to Lucic. Hopefully he doesnt stay long and he can groom his game in the AHL. He was a highly rated prospect going into the Q but he chose to go to NCAA. It just seems odd that you cant get any info on the guy

    Draft Talk

Well to me it looks like the wings will be picking 24th this year? With Washington, Tampa, Boston, San Jose and the Nucks picking after them. Here are a few mocks http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=69365 http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=69366 http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=69367 Jensen, Rakell, and Morrow are who these drafts have the wings taking. The guy I want who is looking to be taken around the wings pick is Tyler Biggs. A big powerforward who hits hard and is a willing fighter (obviously). With the wings sayign they liked taking a big guy last year with Sheahan, if Biggs is on the board at 24 I can see them taking the 6'2, 210 pounder. On D I wouldnt mind David Musil. He is big and plays like Stuart. I'm sick of seeing little offensive Dmen get pushed around in their own zone, Musil could help put an end to this. Scott Mayfield is another guy who could help the wings intheir own zone this draft. He is huge, can hit and has some offensive upside as well.

    PHI Transactions: 6-23-2011

looking at this trade I actually might think the flyers come out on top in this one. They solve their goalie issues, get a guy who is giong to be better version of Richards in Schenn, a very good third liner in Simmonds, a potential star in Voracek, probably one of Strome, Murphy or Courturier and some more solid depth picks. In carter they lose a long contract that doesnt play in the playoffs, and yeah giving up Richards may seem like a lot but JVR and Giroux are ready to step up. I expect 80 points out of Giroux very soon. I actually think the flyers come out on top of ths one

Trading up to grab Mayfield in the second would be good. Take BPA in the first round and than try to move up and grab Mayfield to start filling some needs. In Mackenzies latest draft rankings Mark Mcneil is sliding down a bit into the 20 range. Edmonton has 2 firsts, it makes you wonder if they would take Hudler who is experienced with a cup and could help the young guys offensively in order for the wings to move up to 19 and grab Mcneil who fills a huge need and would still be BPA if he is still around (which I doubt but one can hope ) Mcneil is looking to be the next Jamie Benn/ Brendan Morrow which would be awesome for the wings to have

    July 1st UFA Wish List

Well kenny said he wants to be aggressive and signa defenseman or 2 as well as we've heard possibly a top 6 forward. With that in mind I'm thinking of adding some size in the top 6 that can grind it out now that Homer and Bert are becoming ineffective. I'm looking at Laich first and foremost. Plays a well rounded game, can put up 50 points, can be physical and has size as well. The other forward that catches my eye is Erik Cole. He can put up 50 points, hits like crazy, can put up 50 points and would probably be behind only Helm and mursak speed wise. Adding speed to the top 6 would help tremendously I think as well as having that great forechecing presence that can still put up points. Cole is 6'3 and plays like it as well. He seems like he would be a bit cheapre then Laich because he is older but he is still only 31. Upshall also adds a young, more physical presence as a potential top 6 winger if he can stay healthy. These are my REALISTIC wants that add what Detroit need. What does Tanguay provide that Detroit needs? Defense is where things get a little fishy. Wiz is the obvious choice. PP guy, right handed, tough big hitter from Detroit. Adding him would help a lot. Than maybe adding a Pitkanen or bieksa is still possible or a real top end shut down guy like Brewer or Hannan could be had. They dont provide offense but a really solid defensive guy has been missing in Detroit for a long time outside of Lids. Ian White could be something to look at as well. Just a well rounded guy to play as a number 5 replacement of Ericcson

    Draft Talk

"it seems as if the 5’10” forward plays much smaller with the puck on his stick. Khokhlachev was frequently seen not coming out of the corners with the puck and struggling to fight through checks along the wall." Heres a nice little tidbit about him from the scouting report. Yeah there are archands and Helms and Mitch Callahans, but they played bigger and with tonnes of heart before they were drafted. Khoklachev also has poor defensive ability to go along with being small. Sure some guys dont need size and can play like they are 6'3, but this guy has another potential Jiri Hudler written all over him. Dynamic guy with great hockey sense but neglects his own zone and plays smaller when he has the puck. DO NOT WANT

You dont give a s*** about height and weight because there is a guy who plays like he is twice his size? For every Marchand there aare 10 players who play as soft as Hudler

Red Wings Name New Assistant Coaches

I read on twitter I beleive that Deboer out of Florida has been interviewed for the job. Not sure about his style or anything Ive never really paid any attention to him lol. Gallant or Boughner seem like realistic options, it seems alittle odd that Boughner said he wanted to live in Windsor and pursue other options right around the time the wings had a coaching vacancy. Gallant has done well in St John as well. They probably have alot of guys in mind. Gota wonder if Fischer is in the running for coaching the defense with how well hes done in his role as the player development guy

    Changes in the offseason

That article has a whole lot I like to read. First of all, when saying potential buyouts... Davvid Clarkson. If he gets bought out I could see Kenny going for him because he can play and fight, that is exactly what babcock wants on his team. Because of the buy out he would have some money giong towards him so he would probably be able to be had on the cheaper siide of things. If he is up for trade send Hudler for Clarksonn and a 5th rounder or something, that would help toughen up our third line. Erik Cole and Pitkanen are also having trouble in negotiation with the Canes. Cole is a guy I would like the wings to take a flyer on to add some scoring depth. He put up 50 points last year, hits A LOT, and has top notch speed to add to the top 6. Having a physical presence with speed in the top 6 would help this team out. Adding Pitkanen could help ease the loss of Rafalski. I also didnt mind seeing it noted that Osgood and Drapes might not be back, its time to move on

    Mayfield at number 24

With the draft coming up I've been looking into a lot of the prospects, especially ones that are realistic in the wings range. There seem to be 2 guys who fit what the wings need perfectly and are projected to go wight when they pick, Scott Mayfield and possibly 6'7 Oleksiak as well (might be gone earlier). Mayfield has a very good shot at being there however. Looking at this guy he has: 1) Size - 6'4 and 200 lbs, he will probably fill out another 25 pounds and be a huge player out there, it has been stated teh wings would like to add size to their prospect pool as well. 2) A mean streak - Compares himself to Pronger, imagine the wings with a 6'4 defenseman who actually uses it all to punish his opposition. There are no real high end prospects in the wings system who are real bruisers. Smith an Sheahan could be but they look to be more complimentary physical guys, Mayfield is the real deal. 3) Mobility - the kid can skate very well for a guy his size. We're not looking at a Boris Valabik here who just has size, Mayfield has the mobility. 4) Outstanding defensive skills - he is a straight up shut down defender. One of the best one on one defenseman in this draft, the wings could use someone to tighten up their back end like that. His offense has been questioned, but he has also played on a god awful team the last 2 years, the wings also dont need a tonne of offense with a plethora of puck movers in the prospect pool. At 24, if Mayfield is around I think (unless something crazy happens and someone slips) he will be one of the BPA and fill a huge organizational need as well. Would be a perfect compliment to Smith down the road as a rock solid defender and both could also punish the hell out of other teams.

Babcock Interview + Jagr to Detroit Rumor

Detroit already has their designated floater in Hudler, Jagr isnt his old self and the wings need to stop signing these old vets to deals like that. How did Modano work out? Or Chelios when we had to lose Quincey? Jagr doesnt even dominate in the KHL, how would he do in the NHL? These old guys getting signed by Detroit instead of bringing in young , hungry players is really getting old

    James Wisniewski

4.5 million isnt overpaying I wouldnt say, that seems about fair value to me. He put up 51 points, is ahuge hitter/ can fight and he is better defensively than Rafalski. Rafalski was getting paid 6 million when the cap was lower. Wiz is only gonna get better. The more I think about it the more I can see them sign him, I know people have heard he doesnt like the wings but ive also read he only said that because his blackhawk teammates would chirp him. Adding him would give detroit one of, if not the hardest hitting defense in the league
  24. newfy

    Mayfield at number 24

Ulf Samuellson. And obviously Mayfield saying he plays similar to Pronger doesnt mean hes stomping on peoples legs, it means during actual game play they play similar. Just like when Jim Nill compares Callahan to Matt Cooke and Carcillo, he doesnt play just like them but there are similarities

    Draft Talk

Yep same here, with the depth at forward the wings have, Mrazek and Howard looking good long term and the lack of defense I think 2 of the top 3 picks should be defenseman (obviously if some unreal forward falls to them then yeah take him). In the first I would love to see the wings get their hands on Morrow or Oleksiak. Second round Edmundson would be great Third round Jesse Forsberg looks great as well. All of these guys are tough defenseman who can play the game it seems and have the potential to be shutdown type players. Any 2 of those three would make me very happy. In the third I would love to see the wings go for Travis Ewanyk. He did work against Yakupoov in the u18s as a shutdown type. Hes a great PKer, hits hard, fights well, agitates and is great defensively. With callahan looking to turn out great, I would like to see another forward of his ilk taken out of the dub. Ewanyk looks great in the third round
