I agree with this as well. But I think Abdelkader will be a Cleary type guy who can play on every single line and that at points we will see a combo of Abby and Callahan. I think Aubry Callahan and Andderson also could have the making of a grind line. Aubry is pretty physical and very good defensively, Callahan the tough guy and Andersson a shut down forward that can play physical. Sheahan could also center this line for a bit when he comes to the NHL, though I expect him to have much higher upside Vinny and Cros are really the only high end prospects that have came from the Q in recent memory. Courturier should be a beauty as well but still, the OHL to me is the best junior league all around

Yeah he did it in the swedish media. Probably will never be read by wings staff. Without mindfly on this board from Sweden we would have never even heard this. Not as big of a deal as most on here are making it seem. Was it dumb to say? Yes, but not horrible

Watched the special on TSN about the world junior team and what Bob Mackenzie was saying about the centers had me liking his chances. Canada wants all of their centerman to be big (6'2 204 is pretty big) and very strong defensively. Both of those describe Sheahan to a tee. If he can go to camp and show he has some offense and the only reason he's not producing is the system he's playing in then he should be able to be the 4th line centerman. He really is a wild carrd because of playing in the NCAA. His production isnt indicative of what he can do against people his own age. He would be the guy to center a shut down line from a pure defensive stand point because he is the best defensive center invited to camp

To me what is impressive is the fact that Mursaks knock in the past was his strength but on that play he had a guy draped over his back yanking at him and he still buried.
-
Yeah his brother is quite the fighter thats for sure, I'm sure Brendan can get some pointers from him since Rory is a hockey fighter and Lacrosse fighter. He's done it all lol I thought this clip was pretty funny, what a meathead

Everyone is getting all worked up but it is true. Does anyone here actually not think Ozzie is done? And he really did outplay Howard in Grand Rapids. Maybe he shouldn't have said it but what he said is true
-
This to me is what I find most interesting. What is this kid's ceiling? as soon as he came and played with some good coaches and better competition he has improved remarkably and has kept improving. Last summer hardly any of us thought that he would get invited to the world junior camp, now I think he has a really good chance. When does this kid stop developing? He sure hasn't the last 3 years

The rafters in the Joe are reserved for all time greats. Howe the greatest most well rounded player all time Lindsey and Abel were both part of one of the greatest lines all time that was part of a dynasty and arguably best team of all time in 52 Sawchuk is a top 5 goalie all time, maybe top 3 Yzerman is one of, if not the best leader in the history of the game and if he had not reinvented his game to win, he wouldd be much higher on the all time list. Lidstrom will go up. I think its dumb to say he's better then Orr but he is at least op 5 all time. Does Ozzie belong in the same breath as any of these players? No he wasn't even close. He won 2 cups as a starter and other then that was not anything very special, just a solid goalie on a great team. You dont get your number retired fr that

Completely laughable, way to lose all credibility on this board. The Q is the best junior league in Canada? One last chance to change your mind before you look completely ridiculous
-
Well usually a trade addresses the needs of a team, especially the small ones Holland usually makes. So yeah especially for the red wings they usually make the team better
-
Do you even knnow the whole Rob Ford situation in Toronto? I highly doubt it so maybe reserve judgement til you have some facts. Ford is exactly what that City needs. I tihnk Hudler and Kindl could be a very likely package we trade if we make one but I woudn't do it for Colin White unless there as a second round pick coming back Detroit's way or something
-
Do you know anything about Canadian Junior Leagues? The Q is widely regarded as the worst in terms for preparing you for pro hockey and the WHL and OHL are pretty close and definitely regarded higher then the Q. The WHL is the best league to develop a physical gritty game which is what Callahan is doing ANd everyone is high on him because he is finally a pretty good fighter that may be home grown in Detroit and is showing he's got some skill too. He's invited to the USA world junior camp which is a pretty stacked line up. The WHL is also the hardest league to score in so a 6th round pick that made a junior team as a walk on doing this well is something to get pretty excited about

I'm not saying I want Callahan to be like Avery, just pointing out that he can in fact score goals and is a solid third liner. And that third line was in 09 when we lost in the finals, 08 was Drake Draper and Cleary(?)
-
I'm with you. Callahan has good hands and a nose for the net. He might not be the greatest scorer on a third line but he is definitely looking like he hast the potential to develop into a third line complimentary guy. He has been blowing people out of the water with how far his game has gone, whose to say he can't continue that development? And Shaman since when does a third line consist of all scorers, last time we won the cup our third line was drake Draper and Cleary( I think Cleary). Agitators can play scoring roles, Ott had 20 goals last year, Avery can score, Cooke can score. All of those guys are third line material, why couldn't Callahan be?

Abby Helm Callahan would basically be what the grind line was for us. Abby is like Maltby (except a bit tougher), Helm is like Drapes and Callahan will basically be a Mccarty probably. Mac fought the heavies but wasn't the biggest or most feared fighter in the league, I think Callahan will be right around that level. If Helm and Abby can become stronger defensively and continue to become very good penalty killers we will prettymuch have a carbon copy of the grind line
-
Yeah I think youre right. Abdelkader and Callahan would be a pretty sweet duo to watch too. Imagine Abdelkader out there running everything that moves, Callahan punchign everything that has a problem with it and at least Abdelkader will be able to score clutch goals he's proven. These 2 could really be a grind line revival

Being great in the corners is a great asset to have for killing penalties. I'm not saying like average, hes very good in the corners. And he is still physical just not as big of a hitter as you would expect from someone who beats up 6'3 guys consistently. He gets in on the forecheck and will have some big hits on the D but he is not Kronwall out there or anything. And dont get your hopes up for him to be much more then a 15 goal scorer, sur ehe might be able to do it but scoring is not his game. The scoring is there but he agitates first and foremost
-
Callahan doesn't have a history of a lot of dirty plays but I dont think you have a great read on him. For the style of game he plays he mucks in corners but he is not much of a big hitter at all, he is going to be one of the top middle weight fighters in the league if he makes it. He's only lost like 4 fights out of 50 in his junior career. Think like Rypien level fighting. He also has some pretty good hands but is not a big hitter, hes a hard worker in the corners however. You say Cooke is a bad comparison but what is Scott Nichol? An agitator that has had some dirty plays and is pretty good for what he does. The only difference between Cooke and Nichol's style really is that Cooke can be counted on to score more. So if you would really rather have a guy with Nichol's style (a Matt cooke with less scoring) then so be it but I'll take the guy who agitates and scores
-
Yeah but they would ship anyone out that is bad in the dressing room like Avery was. Averys style of play on the ice wasn't the reason they traded him and its notl ike they just got rid of him for nothing. He was a piece in a very big trade. The wings drafted Callahan and compare him too 2 guys most often: Carcillo and Cooke. Two of the most classless players in the game haha. I really dont think the wings organization cares about how classys players are on the ice
-
Thats the thing, I dont know who he could beat out but he really seems like he could play on an NHL team. I think we're better off calling him up to play on the 4th line then putting someone like Tatar down on the 4th. He's a prototypical 4th liner. I would rather see him on our 4th for the long run instead of letting him walk in favour of putting a skilled guy on the 4th for one season. I could see him beating out iflip, maybe Miller, and maybe Emmerton for a spot in our bottom 6. Iflip is useless in a 4th line role, Miller is pretty redundant, Owens is more physical and will fight. If he can develop into a solid PKer then I think he will be more useful than Miller. Emmerton has only really had this year as a good one. He is solid defensively though but there is potential that Owens could beat him out in that 4th line type role. Owens looked damn good in preseason and earned some extra games with his play,if the wings thought he was a career ahler I doubt they would swap him for Newbury straight up because Newbury is a very good Ahler
-
Like it or not they play similar games. Both agitators, Cooke is one of the best offensive agitators around 15 a year and like I said, Callahan is a guy who plays tougher. Oh not to mention that comparison came from Jim Nill so deal with it That comparison as terrible as you think it is came from the wings front office. I'm trying to think of which website probably Mlive that covers training camp. They had a video interview of Callahan where they asked him how he felt of being compared to Cooke by Jim Nill and he said we play similar styles but I like to think I fight more. Like I said thats not even my comparison, thats from the mouth of Nill and Callahan themselves. Callahan is not a Lucic type player, he doesn't have the size and isnt really a huge hitter for how much he fights. Hes an agitator that is a great pound for pound fighter that is starting to show a scoring touch. I know everyone here hates Cooke and likes to think the wings are too classy to have that style of player but the head office compares him to Cooke and I'm sure they knew that when they drafted him. Maybe the wings aren't as concerned about class as some here like to think
-
No haha forgot about him, put Emmerton as the 13th and Helm as the 4th line center and it works out. Oh and I guess Jordan owens could really make some noise for a roster spot as well, he brings some real energy and a mean streak.

The thing that pissed me off most about this game (besides they got dummied when I had 6th row tickets )was the very end of the game. Okay I know a lot of people on here are gonna ***** and complain and say we are a classy team blah blah blah but I dont care. At the end of the game, infront of your own hometown after you get beat pretty good the other team should not be sending their 4th liners out there to give you s*** after a big loss. Seriously after a big loss like that in your own barn, 5'9 Scott Nichol should not be hacking and whacking at you and Douglas Murray shouldn't be chasing the team around the ice. The wings shoulda been doing it to them to show that they aren't gonna come in here and make the wings run off with their tails between their legs. Theres a point where theres class, but that showing was just plain old no back bone. I was disappointed to see it.. What would Probert say about that?
-
He's already at a good size for the NHL. Apparently he is up around 190 now and at 5'11 thats pretty damn sturdy. He's been fighting 6'3 guys in the WHL regularly so I dont think size is a real problem either, he looks like he could eventually be a very solid 3rd liner with his development curve hes been on. I started a thread in the offseason saying I wonder if he'll be considered as a 4th liner on the world junior team and most here didn't think so, that just shows how far his game has progressed over the course of the season. We might have a guy similar to Matt Cooke here (score 15 goals a year and agitate) just a tougher version that will fight more.
