Official 2014 Olympic Hockey Thread (Admin warning #316)

Exactly... Pretty head scratching decisions I.E. no Bobby Ryan, Keith Yandle, or Dustin Byfuglien. Really really hope this is his last Olympics with team USA. -
Absolutely NO ONE said that Canada "had no chance." In fact, most of us said that they had every chance in the world. Just that some of us were confident that team USA had enough to bring home the Gold (especially the way the tourney had been going). But of course we can't be confident in a gold without it somehow being viewed as a personal attack to certain Canadian fans here. NOW GO SWEDEN FOR THE GOLD!!!
-
Horrible game for team USA. Bad time to have an off-day. I'd love to see a 7 game series against these teams. But gotta give Canada full credit for getting the victory. Hopefully team Sweden puts a whoopin on 'em. GO SWEDEN/RED WINGS!!!

So glad we're getting USA vs Canada. And for the first time ever I'm actually confident that team USA will get the win. Although, I don't see it being too lopsided. In fact, I won't be surprised at all if Canada wins. Both teams are stacked with NHL-talent. But the way I see it, USA has a 'check mark' over Canada in overall team chemistry (especially the forwards) and goaltending. And Canada has a 'check mark' over USA on defense (USA's D has played good but Canada has more top 2 d-men, gotta give them the edge). But just based on the way this tourney is going so far, I believe team USA's areas of strength will be good enough for a Gold. Or at least the Gold medal game. But like I said, a Canadian victory would not shock me. Just nice to finally have this much confidence in American hockey, in terms of bringing home the Gold. Can't wait for the puck to drop!! Should be an epic battle!! U-S-A ALL THE WAY!!! -

No, just found it funny that so many were here for every other game. But when they're tied with a horrible Latvia team it's turns into a Canadian ghost town. But hey Canada just went up 2-1 so you can pretty much cue the rush of Canadians onto the boards now. lol -

Yet there were hoards of them during every other game they've played so far. Something tells me that would be the case right now if Canada were leading 3-0. -

Pure domination by team USA! Can't wait for the next game! Hopefully Canada can fight hard and get past the powerhouse team Latvia. That way we can have the USA vs Canada matchup that most of us want to see. BRING IT ON!!! -
Trade deadline fast approaching - who should we target?
TheDetroitRedWings replied to nyqvististhefuture's topic in General
That's definitely a big if. The way a lot of these contracts have been looking lately, I'm thinking he would get at least 4.5M (if not more) per season. Wouldn't wanna overpay him too much, but for the right price/term I wouldn't mind seeing him in the red and white. Good young (durable) player. -

Of course what? The Czechs are a much more formidable opponent than Slovenia or Latvia. Any team with several NHL players will be a tough test. Is there really any question about that? I should be the one saying "of course." Of course some Canadian would try and downplay the toughness of team USA's matchup, while their team gets yet another non-NHL caliber team to play (aside from playing Finland). It's not like I was singling Canada out. I said Sweden and Canada both have very easy matchups, while the Russians and Americans will both have tougher tests. And that's 100% true. -

Sweden and Canada got very lucky with their matchups. Both should be blowout victories. But Russia and USA will def have a legit test in front of them. Should be interesting to see how it all unfolds. -

Yeah I just noticed that as well. Didn't realize that was the way everyone ranks it. And yeah, they should definitely go by either Golds, or overall medal count. IMHO. -

My apologies I thought TSN was the only ones ranking in that way. I didn't realize that was the universal Olympic ranking system. Again, no hate at all. -

You gotta admit that's a little ridiculous and comes off as them trying to find any way possible to keep themselves as high in the standings as they can. I mean come on a team that has the same amount of Golds and has 3 more overall medals should certainly be higher in the rankings. -

Okay I'll re-phrase my original statement: Canada sure got lucky getting to start out against Norway and Austria, while team USA has already played a respectable team (Slovakia) and are about to play team Russia tomorrow morning. Will be interesting to see how Canada fairs against an actual respectable team. K there ya go. Fixed. -

Yeah actually you did compare them by saying team USA has also not faced a medal contender (after I referred to Norway and Austria being lucky draws). Team Slovakia is much more respected and has a much better chance for a medal than either Norway or Austria. And it's not my fault that team USA hasn't played their 2nd game yet. The point is, Canada got very lucky with their first 2 draws, compared to team USA who already faced a respectable team and will face a Gold medal contender (and home country) team Russia for their 2nd game. Apparently stating facts is "hating on the favorites." So so overly sensitive it's almost laughable. lol -

Ummm...when did team USA play Slovenia?? And we were talking about both team's first 2 games. So Canada playing Finland on Sunday has nothing to do with what we were discussing. -

I couldn't disagree more... Playing weaker teams in the beginning gives them more slack to build up chemistry and have less pressure overall and gives them more time to get their stuff together when they finally do play a medal contender. Yeah and they're tied with USA, Norway and Netherlands for Gold, yet they rank themselves above all 3 despite the fact that all 3 have the same amount of Gold and MORE overall medals. SMH -

You really gonna compare Slovakia and Russia, with Norway and Austria?? Okay Slovakia might not be hardcore contenders. But they have a MUCH better chance than either Austria or Norway (whom Canada had trouble with). And like I said team USA's second game is against team Russia. Pretty sure they're medal contenders (hell they're GOLD medal contenders). -

I noticed that too! At first I thought they were going alphabetically back when Canada was tied with Norway for medals. But now it's pretty obvious they're just keeping Canada as #3 regardless of the medal count. Ridiculous. Inferiority complex much? lol -

Hiller's is freaking awesome! Smith's however, is actually quite horrible.

I guess that's what happens when they invite Martin and Orpik, over Byfuglien and Yandle. Still don't understand the logic (or lack thereof). It's even more ridiculous than not letting Bobby Ryan on the team. -
