    Rule question

I know for a fact that the FLO player would not come out of the box. At 4 on 4 it is an even strength scenario. A goal scored by either team, during this time, would be considered an even strength goal for the stats crew. No player would come out of the box. It's no different than if Player A for DET had received a double minor for high sticking and then Player B for FLO received a minor. If a goal was scored during this time no one comes out either.

    Tomas Holmstrom's fate

Agreed. I guess it all depends though. I do think the Wings will make a push for Parise. In that case I could see Holmstrom hanging them up as the Wings wouldnt necessarily have room. If the Wings did get a Parise then their PP units would have Datsyuk/Zetterberg/Filppula/Franzen/Parise/Hudler-Cleary-Bertuzzi all available so there wouldn't be a big spot for Holmstrom. But if he does come back I think he should be part of the rotation among fourth liners for sure

Detroit has inside track on Parise

Im not entirely sold on the chances that the Wings land either Parise or Suter but I will say this: Over the years the Wings seem to bide their time when it comes to the big acquisition, and when they feel that the time is now they usually make a serious move. The Wings will have cash to spend this summer and if Holland and co. feel the need for a Parise or a Suter are as big as most fans do I do believe they will be much more assertive in trying to sign one of them than they have been in the UFA market these passed few years. That is of course, if they feel the need is as glaring as the fans do.

    Tomas Holmstrom's fate

I couldn't disagree more Agreed. To me, Holmstrom can still serve a purpose. I think the fourth line is a bit of a tough sell this year because Emmerton has struggled at times and he just isn't strong enough. He's gotten better but he's still nowhere near competitive enough for the fourth line to really matter in a game. The Helm injury hurts a lot because ABdelkader moves up and Emmerton is left to centre the fourth. The Eaves injury also really stung. The fourth line should be a combination of Abdelkader, Eaves, Miller, Emmerton, Mursak and Holmstrom. I think if Holmstrom had been used as planned this year, not starting every single game, he would be a much better contributor. I think if he is in and out of the line up he's an asset. When he is a permanent fixture on the fourth I can see how some don't like it.
  7. I wanted to get some people's thoughts on the potential signing of Justin Schultz (asusming he does not re-sign with Anaheim). I'm sure the bulk of you would be interested in the Wings signing him but the real question would be where does he fit into the depth chart this off-season if such a signing were to occur? Here are some links: The Future of Justin Schultz TSN Schultz

    Nyquist needs to stay here

I would have preferred to see (last night's game): Nyquist - Datsyuk - Bertuzzi Filppula - Zetterberg - Hulder Franzen - Abdelkader - Cleary Miller - Emmerton - Holmstrom Let Franzen get his legs back with Abdelkader and Cleary doing the grunt work. Whenver Franzen gets hurt or comes back from an injury he seems very hesitant. I think had he been put with a couple of guys that can do the dirty work (a lot more consistently than Bertuzzi) would be good for Franzen. Then once his skating legs are back if you want to slide Franzen back with Datsyuk then go for it. But I would have started Franzen on the 3rd line

    this team is soft

I have nothing against those players you listed but they're flavor of the week names. There are times when I would definitely like to see more push back from the Wings too. But their philosophy has generally been to use the 4th line as a breeding ground for their prospects to become accustom to the NHL.

Justin Schultz a Potential Wings UFA Target

Well, that is (as you said)assuming they could sign Suter which is a lofty assumption. I'd say it would be more realistic to assume they couldn't sign Suter and they would have Lidstrom, White, Kronwall, Ericsson, Quincey, Kindl, Smith and then Schultz with both Smith and Schultz having minor league options. I dont think it would be the worst thing in the world for Schultz to spend a year in the AHL if only to get accustom to the full pro schedule. He may not want to do that but it would make sense to me.

    this team is soft

I didnt really think that the bump on Conklin was retaliation worthy. That being said, I thought what Jack Johnson did to Filppula early in the game deserved a punch to the face. Johnson literally steam rolled his head with his fist (knocking Fil down), then shoved him and fash washed him while Fil was on the ground. I also didn't like the end where Zetterberg was taking shots as the horn blew

What's to hate about that line? Cleary has been hobbled this year because of his knee problems. But typically he's a much better and quicker skater than he has displayed this season. Bertuzzi is much better with the puck than people sometimes give him credit for being. I actually think this is the preferred (for me) 3rd line

That's awesome - thank you. I've been wanting to watch some Griffins games this year and have my local Sports package but the one league it doesnt cover is the AHL. I'll be checking out some Griffs games this weekend. Thanks again

Well, yeah, I'm not saying the players would be thrilled. Last time there was a rollback of 22% (I believe). The players also lost an entire year's worth of earnings. If the owners presented a rollback of say 5% it might not be so bad. Either way, that's all irrelevant. I was just saying that working on the assumption that there is a rollback (and preferably no lock out) that it could be to the teams advantage. That's why it will and should be business as usual come July 1

3/28 GDT: Red Wings 2 at Blue Jackets 4

Yeah, i just think he is severely underrated on this board. I'm not saying he's a stud or that I want him in the top 4 but I think he can be a dependable 5/6 pairing and he adds more, today, to the line up than Kindl.

Assuming a roll back without a lockout it really would work out well for GMs and teams. It would mean that on July 1 you could build your team under the cap number (whatever it gets announced as) and ideally sign players on that basis. Then, when the roll back happens everyone's salaries take a hit. obviously a lockout would be the concern but if it's a small rollback the players may be fine with it. What's even better (financially) is that for teams with players signed long term (i.e. Zetterberg, Franzen) after the roll back their salaries not only decrease but remain at that new level as the cap (ideally) rises year after year moving forward. That would mean an increased bargain.

    Needs to be said

Even now, with just 6 games left it's possible. Obviously the Wings would need some help and they'd have to run the table but it is by no means impossible since the Wings and blues square off once more. Personally, the only downside I ever really see for the Wings in the playoffs is travel. I hate to see them start the playoffs with a west coast team because I think it sets the tone for the entire drive. That alone (not to mention pride, building good habits, entering the playoffs on a roll etc.) is enough reason not to want to drop to 6th. That being said, I almost hope the Wings end up against SJ at some point in these playoffs. I think both of the series the last two years were not nearly as bad as some like to think. In my mind SJ was lucky to be up 3-0 to start last year (hell, even the year before) and I think the Wings dominated games 4-6 with 7 being a toss up. Add in a healthy Franzen and things may have been different. I would relish the opportunity for the Wings to put SJ down.

3/28 GDT: Red Wings 2 at Blue Jackets 4

Tonight will be exciting for a couple of reasons: 1. When the Wings win they will be 3 pts up on Nashville and even in ROW which will set up Friday night's game to awesome. If they win Friday that will essentially guarantee them the 4th seed. 2. Despite the hate Franzen and Ericsson get on these boards by some they are returning and the Wings will have essentially the line up they are going to start the playoffs with (minus Howard, assuming Helm will need a tiny bit more time). Franzen - Datsyuk - Bertuzzi Filpulla - Zetterberg - Hudler Miller - Abdelkader - Cleary Nyquist - Emmerton - Holmstrom Lidstrom - White Kronwall - Stuart Ericsson - Quincey

    Nyquist needs to stay here

I remember filling in for a couple games because there was no choice. I don't think Miller can really be counted on, as a centre, for any elongated period of time. But who knows, maybe you're right To me Nyquist fits better with Datsyuk and Franzen (over Fil and Zetterberg) because although he's not really a shoot first guy his speed creates goal scoring chances for him. Both he and Hudler are pass first guys but I think nyquist speed would do more to open up space for Datsyuk and Franzen than having Hudler with the pair. Plus, I think Zetterberg is so much more of a shooter than Datsyuk that Hudler on a line with two guys that are shooting the puck a lot makes sense. I just see more benefit to Nyquist with Datsyuk and Franzen (especially considering the chemistry Nyquist and Franzen had in the preseason) and leaving Hudler with Fil and Zetterberg

Yeah, the Armada are looking like a force right now and Oullette is racking up some points. I've always had a soft spot for AA. I really hope the size thing is overblown. RWC has him listed at 5'10 and 175lbs which really isn't bad. but it all comes down to how much strength he has. I think we may see his point production be quite good in GR. I want to catch the Griffs on Friday. That's going to be sweet. I really like Sproul as well. I think the Wings' D prospects are severely underrated when you consider Smith, Oullette, Sproul, AA, Jensen, and Backman. Only Smith is NHL close but when you consider Marchenko and Marshall as well they have a lot to look foward to.
