I have to say, so far this season I've been very happy with Maltby. He seems to have an extra step, he's crashing, banging and pissing ppl off. I think in the playoffs he was just burnt out. Babcock needs to rest him throughout the season I think if he plans on using him in the playoffs.

May doing exactly what he needs to do Stuart is a beast tonight so far. I'm glad to read some posts that agree with him being very valuable to us.

    Updates from today's practice

That was a pretty creative post. But I do have one problem with it. Without knowing the actual y, being a function of t, it's a little tough to accept x = lim[y(t)]^-1. You are definitely right that as t approaches oo that x will equal zero but no where do I see how curve/function makes reference to Holmstromg skills at say age 22 being on the rise until say age 32 and then beginning to decline. Considering at at time zero y will equal zero and at time 100 (to reference your example) y shuold also be zero it would be better suited to use a bell shaped curve to represent Holmstrom's ability. The only problem with that is by no means was he at his peak exactly one half way through his life nor would the incline of his ability work at the same rate as his decline. I'd b interested to see what function you gave y

    More Rule Bending.

Although it's common knowledge that there'd be interest in pending UFAs I do see how someone actually coming out and saying that if the Sedins hit the market we will be pursuing causes trouble in ongoing contract negotiations with their current team. At the same time I do agree with what most in this thread are saying that it's already common knowledge and therefore wont change anything. I heard this morning the Leafs were fined 25k which is pennies to them, it's not even a slap on the wrist. In my opinion the only reason the NHL even looked into this is because the Canucks apparently raised a stink which makes me think that negotiations must have been a little tougher after Wilson's comments otherwise why bother? Either way, this stuff happens all the time so who cares really

    IIHF vs. NHL.

Personally I see both sides of the story. Obviously every hockey fan wants to see all the best players in the world compete for each of their countries at the Olympics. But at the same time I understand Bettman's side of things. Fasel accused Bettman of looking out for his brand which is exactly what he SHOULD be doing. It does hurt the momentum of the season to have an olympic break and it does create an uneven playing field for teams with a lot of players participating in the olympics vs. teams with no participants. Also injuries are a concern etc etc. Obviously, as a fan I would want to see everyone compete in the olympics but as proud as I am of my country to be absolutely honest I am a bigger fan of the Detroit Red Wings than I am of my country's hockey team. I know a lot of ppl may think that comment is ignorant but that's the truth. Fact is I am Canadian, from Toronto but grew up watching the Red Wings. In a lot of ways I would much rather the Wings win the Stanley Cup than team Canada win the gold medal. If it were between having everyone compete and Canada winning the gold medal and no one competing and the Wings winning the SC then there is no question what I would prefer.

    Red Wings Preseason Stats

Does anyone have a link to the complete Red Wings preseason stats? I was looking through some game sheets and it seems to me that Jason Williams put up 4 goals and 3 assists in 6 games. I know it's only the preseason but that's obviously solid. I'd love to find a link with all the Wings preseason stats

That is definitely a good point and does hold some weight. However, to me it's more about the quality of starts and the timeliness of the goals he lets in. His playoff performances dont help either. Personally I do think he has been played too much over the last several years in the regualr season and I think that contributes to his playoff performances. His play just doesn't strike me as being as dominant as it once was. The argument can go both ways I guess. Yeah his GAA has gone up and his save % has gone down but his wins have been strong. With a good team in front of him and starting as many games as he does he is likely to get a lot of wins. For me the best way to judge a goaltender is his Save %, quality of saves, and timeliness of saves when the game is on the line. Some four years ago I'd find it hard to say anyone was as good a big game goaltender as he was. Today I feel like there are a ton of other guys who are as good if not better than him in this regard. Don't get me wrong, in my view his is still an elite NHL goalie. But I do think his dominance has come down a little over the last few years.
  17. For me it's not about the total penalty minutes but the quality and timing of those calls. I remember game 3 of the finals and Ericsson got called for Interference and Gonchar went on to score. To me that was a call that they had been letting go all game long and then in a tie game with ten minutes to go they make that call. FOr me that was a tough one to swallow. Game 5 of the finals the Pens racked up four 10 minute misconducts and sure Detroit got powerplays but that was in a 5-0 game when Pittsburgh was gooning it up. For me it's not even a comparison between Detroit and Pittsburgh. It just seemed to me that the WIngs got a lot of penalties called against them in very advantageous times for the other team while they'd go on the powerplay when the games fate is all but sealed. Obviously this wasn't the case 100% of the time but from a numbers stand point you'll always see the refs and the league try to even things up. Problem is powerplays are more timing and situation basd as opposed to quantity based. I'd rather 1 powerplay late in the third with a tie game as opposed to 3 powerplays when we're leading 5-0. Obviously being a fan of the Wings I can't be 100% unbiased but I do try to be as unbiased as I possibly can. For me it's not about sulking or whining that PIttsburgh won because breaks are breaks and we've gotten our share over the years. That being said I can understand the frustration some ppl feel. No matter how well the Wings do every year you have tons of ppl in the media claiming the Wings are too old, to soft, have goaltending issues and so on to go deep in the playoffs. After winning the cup in 2008 so many analysts didnt give them a chance. Where as a lot of ppl seem to be givign Pittsburgh more and more credit. Granted this summers media predictions are scattered you still see a lot of media personel loving off the penguins. To me they were and still are a very solid team. They may stumble a little bit from a hangover but at the end of the day they are a top four Eastern Conference team and will no doubt make it to the 2nd round at least. Draws in the playoffs are extremely important (as we saw last year in pittsburgh favour and against detroit, and we saw in 2008 to detroit's favour and against Pittsburgh). Once the playoff seeds are set anything can happen

Calgary - Adding Bouemeister with Phaneuf on the back end the Flames should get a fair amount of offense from their blueline. Losing Cami up front definitely will hurt them but having Jokinen for a full season will help. Personally I just dont think they will score enough to pull out the tight games you need to win in order to win your division. As good as Kiprusoff can be his numbers have declined every year since joining the Flames. It's time to put up or shut up. Until I see him get back to form I won't be banking on it. One good bit of news on the Kiprusoff front is that this was the first offseason that he hired a personal trainer and apparently he's come to camp in the best shape of his career. I think it's key for the Flames to get some quality starts from anyone other than Kiprusoff because it seems like every spring Kiprusoff is burnt out. Vancouver - Their blueline is absolutely sick. Ehroff has a bomb from the blueline and adding in Schneider makes their 2nd pp unit that much stronger. Now obviously Schneider won't be in the line up every single night but they have 7 very strong defensemen. In my mind that blueline has got to be top 2 or 3 in the league easy. Offensively they should be pretty good. I don't think we'll necessarily see repeat performances on the hands of Kyle Wellwood and Mikael Samuelsson but it's not out of the cards either. The Sedins will be heavily counted on as usual. To me the Canucks take the division. Philadelphia - Adding Pronger makes the Flyers that much tougher to play against. For me I think the Flyers will be so strong that even if Emery is only decent they shouldn't have much trouble taking their division. I think we'll see big years from Gagne, Carter, Hartnell, and Richards. I even think Briere will put up good numbers again. Not to jump on the bandwagon but I really can't see the Flyers not making the ECF. Pittsburgh - Every year ppl talk about the Stanley Cup hangover and obviously it can play a small role but I dont usually put a lot of stock into it. This year is a little bit different. I think the fact that the Pens are so young and were so inexperienced (with winning it all) that these young guys are going to be looked upon to lead by example this year and after a long summer of partying that could be tough. I think Marc-ANdre Fleury may be the guy to struggle the most for Pittsburgh as he commonly inconsistent and they may stumble a bit out of the gates. Losing Scuderi and Gill will hurt but it shouldnt be that big of a deal. Gill played way above his capabilities in the playoffs last year and really isnt that great. Adding Jay McKee was a great move on their part and I think he'll pay dividends instantly. Chicago - As good as Huet can be at times I don't think this is the guy to take Chicago anywhere. Things looked so good for this team last year making it to the WCF but with all the turmoil they have faced and the pending RFAs next season I think the wheels could come off a little bit. Personally I think they definitely make the playoffs but I dont see them advancing beyond the 2nd round. There are jsut too many other good teams out there and Chicago doesn't stand out as much as they did several months ago.

    Jonas Gustavsson

I live in Toronto so I've seen a lot of media coverage about Gustavsson. On sportscentre they said that Ron Wilson plans on starting him for 35 games this season and depending on how Toskala plays that number could go up. I think something to keep in mind is that Toronto's defense has really improved. The teams overall goals against should be solid and that will only help Gustavsson look good. Personally, I think GUstavsson will have a very good year and will steal the overall number 1 job in Toronto. But he wont completely dominate like a lot of ppl think. He one day will be dominant but he is only a rookie. Look at Steve Mason last year in COlumbus. He had a great year but you can only do so much. They both have a lot of room to grow.
  22. I think the Pens will get a decent draw in the first round of the playoffs. In my mind the Pens finish top 4 in the East (with Boston, Philadelphia, and Washington). After those 4 teams it's kind of a log jam with the Rangers, Devils, Hurricanes, Canadiens, Senators, etc etc. It seems like each of the top four in the east should have an all right draw in the first round.

    Cleary: "I can't stand Pittsburgh"

To get Osgood those two extra wins the series would have had to been changed to a best of 11. That way the Wings would have needed to win 6 games instead of 5 of 9
