If you define a sniper purely based on his shooting percentage then so be it. To me, being a sniper is about the areas of the ice you frequent, the shoot first or pass first mentality you have and the types of goals you score. Semin is a sniper (despite his lower goal output this year). Hudler is a pass first player who happened to have a high shooting percentage this year. To me, that doesnt make him a sniper. Matthieu Perrault (WSH) had a 26.7 SH% on 16 goals. But I definitely do not consider him a sniper. Just take a look at all the top goal scorers in the league this season. Some would be classified as snipers and others as goal scorers (meaning how they schore their goals). But one thing you'll notice is not many of them had really high shooting percentages. Also, as I noted in my original post I agree that I would prefer a different type of player to take Hudler's spot this year. I mentioned a guy like David Jones because he is big, skates well, is right handed and scores on par (approximately - this year a handful less and last year he potted 27) with Hudler. He is also priced about where Hudler was/is/will be.
-
First off, I agreed in saying I didn't think Hudler should come back. Secondly, Jiri Hudler is not a sniper - never has been and never will be one. He has always been a pass first player who has a pretty solid shot. He scored his goals in the playoffs the exact same way he scored the bulk of his regular season goals. He routinely set up in front of the net all season long. To me, when people make posts like yours above I honestly wonder if we were watching the same team all year. I'm not trying to insult you but I really don't understand your point of view. When i read posts like that it comes across, to me, as though you just hate him so badly that you just flat out don't want him back on the Wings next year so you look to chastise his game in any fashion you can. Whether that is in fact what you are doing or not, i dont know. But that's the way it comes across.

Personally, I'm of the opinion that it's irrelevent whether Jersey wins the cup or not (for Parise's potential departure). I think that even if the Devils were to win this year that the team's financial instability casts a significant shadow of doubt on the future. Not in terms of whether or not the Devils would fork over the money to sign Parise today but more so in terms of if they will be able to ice a competitive, money spending team in the future (throughout Parise's tenure with the team moving forward). I think the Devils got in bed with Kovalchuk and I just dont see a team who lost in the neighbourhood of $20M being able to sign another monster contract while telling it's players that they will spend to stay contenders for years to come. That's blind hatred right there...or at least seems to be. Say what you will about Hudler but he earned his money this year and came through with goals at some tough times. I personally would rather see the Wings throw ~$3M to some one like David Jones while letting Hudler walk but it's not because he stunk.

The Wings are usually pretty patient with players. They know that Quincey didn't perform to his abilities but it would be a detriment to themselves to give up on him now (not only for trading a 1st for him but also because he will be better sooner or later). They will qualify him for sure. Secondly, althogh White was good in the first half of the season I think we all got a little carried away with our love affair for him. Down the stretch, and in the playoffs, he looked like a 5/6 d-man. He is inconsistent and misses assignments. That being said, for what he is paid he's pretty decent. Whether the Wings get Suter or not this summer they will most certainly add a defenceman. Stuart is gone and whether Lidstrom comes back or not is irrelevent (in terms of UFA) as the Wings will add. Lidstrom - UFA Kronwall - Ericsson Quincey - White Smith/Kindl Every one is assuming Smith will be a regular next season. Although I want him to be the fact that he has minor league options and still needs to show up at camp and earn a spot means nothing is set in stone.

Cleary scores 20 next season...I would bet good money on that

HBO 24/7 Returning for Maple Leafs @ Red Wings Winter Classic
mmamolo replied to Textbook's topic in General
This is why, no matter how bland some Wings may appear (whether on purpose on not) on camera, the show for Wings fans will be hilarious: From Yahoo Sports’ Dmitry Chesnokov: Datsyuk: “For next year’s Winter Classic I need to read more books and come up with a follow up about the Universe and celestial objects.” ... BTW, Datsyuk and Bryzgalov were roomies in Vancouver during the Olympics. “But we didn’t talk about space,” Datsyuk said. -

Just because it happened once before doesn't mean it will happen again. If anything both parties - NHLPA and the NHL - saw how much was lost on both sides not to let it happen again. I think, despite some people thinking it'll get nsty (which it might), that both sides will be more apt to sorting it out together. They may want to kill each other but both sides now know how much of a vested interested they each have in finding something that works for everyone. -
Thank you so much for imparting your vast knowledge upon us lowly, unrealistic Wings fans. You can think the Wings are aging and in decline all you want and I wont go so far as to call you a jackass for presenting your opinions as facts but you've got to understand why people get tired of listening to those opinions when you talk down to anyone who doesn't share them with you. Personally, I think it is entirely possible that Parise and Suter sign for the $6.5-7M that I noted because to me, from what I've read them saying, they are more interested in winning and being on a competitive team for the duration of their deals than just cashing in on a monster paycheck. I'm not guaranteeing it will happen but to just flat out say they are signing for $8M/yr (like a lot of posters claim) without acknowledging the possibility that that may not happen is ridiculous. Believe what you'd like to believe but don't try to convince me your opinion is fact.
-
I love how posters like you express your opinion as though it is fact. You may be of the opinion that it will take $7.5-8M/yr to get each of Suter and Parise and that's fine, but that doesn't mean that is what will happen. It also doesn't mean that an opinion of it taking $6.5-7/yr (which both the poster before me and I had especially if you read the whole post) to get each of them is wrong.

yeah, obviously nothing is set. I wouldnt be so worried about a team like NSH of NJ because they're teams that have financial issues and regardless of what the cap number is teams like that will have self-imposed numbers. The real issue, to me, would be teams that need to reach the cap floor (i.e FLO last year). I'm not saying Suter or Parise are guys who would chase money and nothing more but ya never know. Plus, teams that need someone legit to get excited about (CBJ) may make a much crazier push. A team like CBJ could market their team around someone like Parise - especially if they do indeed move Nash - and to them it will be about much more than landing a player to be competitive.

FORWARDS Gustav Nyquist ($0.875m) / Pavel Datsyuk ($6.700m) / Zach Parise ($6.500m) Valtteri Filppula ($3.000m) / Henrik Zetterberg ($6.083m) / David Jones ($2.750m) Johan Franzen ($3.955m) / Darren Helm ($1.200m) / Todd Bertuzzi ($2.075m) Drew Miller ($0.838m) / Justin Abdelkader ($1.000m) / Danny Cleary ($2.800m) Patrick Eaves ($1.200m) DEFENSEMEN Niklas Kronwall ($4.750m) / Ryan Suter ($6.500m) Nicklas Lidstrom ($6.200m)/Jonathan Ericsson ($3.250m) Kyle Quincey ($3.350m)/ Brendan Smith ($0.875m) Jakub Kindl ($0.883m) GOALTENDERS Jimmy Howard ($2.250m) Josh Harding ($1.000m) ------ CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter) (these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion) SALARY CAP: $70,000,000; CAP PAYROLL: $68,533,379; BONUSES: $37,500 CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $1,466,621 I also left left space under the cap in case it takes more to sign some of the UFAs so the posters who automatically assume Parise/Suter will sign for absurd contracts don't jump down my throat.

Predators bench Radulov and A. Kostitsyn for Game 3 of WCSF
mmamolo replied to edicius's topic in General
Adam Lind also says 'what's up?' As far as I know the specifics, other than curfew, have not been released by the Preds. If you read the quotes that Poile gave to the press it sounds like there is a lot more to it than just curfew. Regardless, the way Radulov and Kostitsyn had been playing it serves the Preds better to sit them down. Halischuk and Tootoo will bring energy to their team tonight and it's possible that being made to look like idiots and missing a playoff game may actually like a fire under Radulov and Kostitsyn's asses. Also, I dont think many people have a problem with players going out and partying and doing all the things we all like to do. The issue is more keeping it in moderation. There are a lot of companies who would dislike it if you were on a corporate business trip and you were out partying until 4 or 5 in the morning and your performance is down. Everything in moderation -
Calle Jarnkrok - Does he have a chance to make next season's team?
mmamolo replied to a topic in General
To me, there is next to no chance Jarnkrok will be with the Wings next season. I dont see the need to rush him. That being said, I think the WC will go a long way in determining the timing and possible progression for him. The WC can really help young, emergin players develop. Also, if Jarnkrok gets regular playing time he may see some ice time with Zetterberg, Franzen etc. If Jarnkrok has a solid WC and a nice showing at camp then you never know. I just dont think there will be the roster space next fall. -

That's ridiculous. You may not feel as though there will be a season (based on your 50/50 or 60/40 odds but that doesnt mean it's true. Is there a chance the start of the season is delayed? Sure. But the odds of the season be cancelled in it's entirety? The odds are way smaller than you'd have us believe -
Calle Jarnkrok - Does he have a chance to make next season's team?
mmamolo replied to a topic in General
I'm no expert on european hockey but I'd imagine that the Swedish WC team would have a slight biased toward Jarnkrok (over Nyquist) because they've seen him so much more (SEL vs. College hockey and GR). As far as Jarnkrok, Nyquist, Tatar on the roster next year...there's no way. Nyquist will be there but just look at who is signed already. There's no room. Yes, there is a possibility of a trade but not a likely one. -
That's not really the point - I dont think. Most people are fine with subsidizing others but the question is to what extent? Each person has a line to where they believe that a reason amount has been surpassed. Personally, I'm not surprised that a team like NSH is receiving that amount of money from league, city and state sources. To some people though, that might be way too much.

Report: Luongo officially requests trade out of Vancouver
mmamolo replied to edicius's topic in General
You've got to figure that Schneider gets in the $1.6-2.4M range - at least that would be my guess. If Scott Gomex can yield Ryan McDonaugh in a trade I'm going out on a limb and saying Luongo can yield Nail Yakupov....ok, I'm kidding -
Report: Luongo officially requests trade out of Vancouver
mmamolo replied to edicius's topic in General
It makes sense. He knows VAN wants to go with Schneider. He's also trying to help out the Canucks by making it seem, to the rest of the leauge, that the trade is happening because of his wants (not the team's) and that will help to not diminish his value on the market. I feel bad for any team who picks up that contract but at the same time he would do wonders for a team that has playoff aspirations (as opposed to Stanley Cup aspirations) like Tampa -
wow, I think you've already made it abundantly clear you want Franzen out. Way to hijack another thread. In reference to what you said about Franzen I wouldnt be against it if it brought in the right player. To me, I would want someone other than Perry.
-
I think everyone would take Staal on their team but I don't see how that trade would make sense for the Pens. PITT would be looking to move Staal only if they see it as impossible to re-sign him at the end of next season when his current contract is set to expire. Filppula's contract is also set to expire next summer. Now, granted Staal will probably get a higher priced contract than Filppula but if the Pens and Wings were to make that exchange the difference between Filppula's and Staal's new contracts wouldn't be enough for PITT to really go for it.
-
Typically I'm not too crazy about teams trading for the negotiating rights of a player. However, if Holland chose to go that route this summer I would be opposed because I think it could proove invaluable on multiple fronts. If Holland were to trade for Parise's rights and then sign him it would only further aid in helping to sign Suter (if he in fact becomes avaialable and truly does want to play with Parise). That being said, after seeing teams excahnge picks for the rights to players like Ehroff last summer the asking price for negotiating rights may be a little crazy (just as the trade market has been over the last year and change).

I gotta get off my computer in a minute but I would bet you just about anything Quincey is back in October

Man, don't even tease with a $68M cap. If that were the case this is what I would want: FORWARDS Gustav Nyquist ($0.875m) / Pavel Datsyuk ($6.700m) / Zach Parise ($6.500m) Valtteri Filppula ($3.000m) / Henrik Zetterberg ($6.083m) / David Jones ($2.750m) Johan Franzen ($3.955m) / Darren Helm ($1.200m) / Todd Bertuzzi ($2.075m) Drew Miller ($0.838m) / Justin Abdelkader ($1.000m) / Danny Cleary ($2.800m) Jan Mursak ($0.550m) / Patrick Eaves ($1.200m) / DEFENSEMEN Niklas Kronwall ($4.750m) / Jonathan Ericsson ($3.250m) Nicklas Lidstrom ($6.000m) / Ryan Suter ($6.500m) Brendan Smith ($0.875m) / Kyle Quincey ($3.450m) Jakub Kindl ($0.883m) GOALTENDERS Jimmy Howard ($2.250m) Joey MacDonald ($0.550m) ------ CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter) (these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion) SALARY CAP: $68,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $68,033,712; BONUSES: $37,500 CAP SPACE (23-man roster): $266,288 Honestly, I dont even think we'd see a dip in his goal scoring. He may not have the huge games here and there but I think a 3rd line role with Helm and Bertuzzi could bring more consistency to his game. I think Franzen needs to be the top guy on his line. Plus, he is a legit threat to score (even though he disappears for games) and teams would have a harder time matching up with the Wings if Datsyuk anchored line 1, Zetterberg line 2 and Franzen line 3. Even more so if some one like Parise could be added.

I doubt Vignault gets fired but if he did I could definitely see him in MTL. That's not that crazy. Mike Babcock will 100% not be fired.
